PSP devs given 'opportunity to look at non-gaming applications'

PlayStation's Al De Leon was sneaking around New York with a prototype of the new PSP Go and, when asked about possibility of developers producing non-game applications for the device (and, in turn, other versions of the PSP), stated that content "will mostly be games, but there's an opportunity to look at non-gaming applications." Speaking to CNET, he demonstrated the new device in a video, which you can see after the break.
With rumors pointing to a non-gaming section of the PSP Store set to be revealed at Gamescom Cologne in August, we could be seeing some interesting non-gaming additions to the PSP library soon.

rells009 @ Jun 25th 2009 12:08PM
It'd be interesting to see what Sony comes up with to make the PSN store a worthy App Store competitor.
Cody @ Jun 25th 2009 1:55PM
I'm sorry but that thing is kicking and screaming for a touchscreen.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 25th 2009 12:07PM
YouTube app, and IM app, and email app would be great!
Andrew @ Jun 25th 2009 12:11PM
The lack of keyboard would be a big development hurdle to pass, especially for apps like IM and email. Virtual keyboards (non-touch screen) are not preferable when inputting data longer than your character's name.
Sidebuster @ Jun 25th 2009 12:23PM
Good thing the Go has a pop out keyboard then.
sony boy @ Jun 25th 2009 12:25PM
i can type words pretty fast on the qwerty keyboard on the on-screen keyboard.
BxGT @ Jun 25th 2009 12:38PM
I may be wrong but doesnt the psp have that pathetic t9 excuse for a keyboard.I really hope they change that.
johnson412 @ Jun 25th 2009 1:03PM
@BxGT
They added a QWERTY keyboard in a firmware update a while back. Still not a great replacement for a keyboard, but much better than what it had before.
AndrewNoNumbers @ Jun 25th 2009 8:10PM
Since when was that Sidebuster?
joeybeast @ Jun 25th 2009 12:08PM
Sweet, can't wait for the calculator app.

How is the battery life on this bad boy?
sony boy @ Jun 25th 2009 12:25PM
the battery life is just as bad as the older psp's. 3 to 6 hours of gameplay.
Ryoga Vee @ Jun 25th 2009 12:16PM
PSP-3000 was great.
This $#!+ is all 2000 and late!

Cosmo (formerly Chin-Poh) @ Jun 25th 2009 12:20PM
I guess the boring ol basics are a given, like calculator, alarm, organizer with calendar, etc.
sony boy @ Jun 25th 2009 12:21PM
youtube app, anyone???
Cosmo (formerly Chin-Poh) @ Jun 25th 2009 12:24PM
I'll be more happy with a robust web browser with as much flash support as possible, not just for Youtube, but also to play flash games on other websites, other video streaming sites, etc.
Sly @ Jun 25th 2009 4:23PM
^yes
hairyghoul @ Jun 25th 2009 4:28PM
er... psp has a web browser?
hairyghoul @ Jun 25th 2009 4:30PM
more robust, yes!!
Snowblind @ Jun 25th 2009 12:25PM
Not really interested in these non gaming apps, I definitely don't see things like IM and email working on it.
But when are they going to announce the UK price? They can't honestly be £230.. I've been thinking about just getting a 3000, but it seemed pointless with these coming soon, but for that price they're not even worth considering.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 25th 2009 1:12PM
How is it pointless to buy a 3000 with the Go coming out soon? It's the same PSP except with 16GB Flash Memory, Blue Tooth, and M2 expandable memory.
A 3000 can have up to 32GB of memory, and a wired headset or attachable hands free headset.
Also the 3000 has a bigger screen and better analog placement.
Lastly the 3000 is still going to be supported along with the PSPgo
Snowblind you need to do some research before you say something dumb like that again.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 25th 2009 1:32PM
@ InFaMoUs1
The go will also have exclusive apps
Snowblind @ Jun 25th 2009 1:32PM
You need to stop being so agressive and assuming so much.
I'd prefer to get a Go because, mainly because it's a newer model, but I actually dislike the placement of the analogue nub on the 3000, it's very uncomfortable to use, and it looks like it'd be a lot better on the Go.
I also don't like the UMD drive, so all the games I get will be digital either way, so for me the Go seems like a better choice, especially if it's not going to be much more expensive.
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 25th 2009 1:34PM
Snowblind, PSP 3000 will be cheaper then Go either way, its not pointless buying it at all, it would be pointless if they were the same price, yeah, but as the PSPgo is more expensive and the 3000 is still being supported, its not pointless at all.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 25th 2009 1:37PM
@ InFaMoUs1 again
PSPgo can also connect to the TV and output the video on screen to your TV in adition to that you can connect your wireless sixaxis to it and use the TV as the screen instead of the Go.
InFaMoUs1- @ Jun 25th 2009 1:55PM
Who the fuck said it will have "exclusive apps"? Are you that ignorant? A fucking clock that's your exclusive app? well fuck I don't need a round clock to tell me what time it is I can just look at the top right side of my PSP 2000 for the time.
Another thing my PSP 2000 can connect to my HDTV also and yeah you can use you PS3 controller only to access the XMB and NOT GAMES on the PSPgo. Like I said do some research before you say something dumb as exclusive apps.
Snowblind @ Jun 25th 2009 2:17PM
@Maverick
The PSP 3000 costs £150 here, and even just an 8gb memory stick costs £20. So assuming the Go is released for £180 (which is how much the original PSP was launched for), it's going to be the far better deal.
The only problem is that all sites are currently listing it as £230, which is hopefully just a place holder because it's totally ridiculous.
rells009 @ Jun 25th 2009 12:25PM
It's a shame Sony didn't just go ahead and make a PSP2 with a touchscreen. While I don't think one is necessary it would've made it easier to sell it to a wider market, especially with the imminent "app store".
zaphodb42 @ Jun 25th 2009 12:33PM
I say no to a touch screen. Touch screen gaming is quite annoying. I prefer to not have my fingers blocking the screen.
Topher @ Jun 25th 2009 3:14PM
Yes TouchScreen would make this so much better closed!
But not for game use! Only for XMB and INTERNET (Virtual KEYBOARD)
isotrex @ Jun 25th 2009 12:26PM
finally, they decided for more applications on psp. thanks to the homebrew scene i guess. i think there's already a lot of homebrew apps out there enough to satisfy psp owners. but it would be nice to see some commercial s/w for the psp.
Snowblind @ Jun 25th 2009 12:30PM
I think they've done a good job combating homebrew, it's just too much of a pain to keep up with now, plus it prevents certain features from working entirely. If they handle this app store properly, I could see the homebrew fading almost enitrely.
Crazy-008 @ Jun 25th 2009 12:32PM
Homebrew is as innevitable as the pspgo2 being relased next year.

its not NEARLY as much can be done with it tho. I mean if it were touch screen and had GPS, and a camera it would be SOOOOOOO much more that could be done with it. But maybe it can set the ground for the PSP2 in 2010 or 2011 which will have all of those hopefully.
Crazy-008 @ Jun 25th 2009 12:35PM
dare to dream friend....
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 25th 2009 1:39PM
dont all PSPs currently have GPS n e ways?

please tell me you arent serious
Shoyz @ Jun 25th 2009 12:33PM
I love how in all of these 'previews' of the PSP GO, none of them actually turn the device on.
Is all they're holding a piece of plastic?
Snowblind @ Jun 25th 2009 12:35PM
It was on, it was running the clock app.
Shoyz @ Jun 25th 2009 12:37PM
Whoops. Now I see it.
Originally, it gave me a 'This video UNIDENTIFIED is only available at CNET.com', even though it played. It was transparent black, and un-closable. It must have darkened the screen so I couldn't see it.
Crazy-008 @ Jun 25th 2009 12:38PM
Before that it was running the Darkscreen App.
Scuffles @ Jun 25th 2009 12:52PM
The PSP Go is hardly an "improvement" over existing PSP iterations the only two things it offers above the normal PSP is it has built in internal storage.. whoop de doo and its hook is that it has bluetooth ?
I guess my point here being that the PSP Go is just as capable as the original PSP at running non gaming apps and there are some non gaming apps that would be great .... the clock app is not one of them....
They seem to be hyping that
Now with the PSP Go !!!! we can do all this cool stuff
but in actuality its more like
Now With the PSP Go !!! we are pulling our collective heads out of our butts and doing what we should have done at the original PSP launch !!!
Don't get me wrong its a huge step forward .... but don't try to give credit to the revolutionary new PSP Go ..... because this is sony playing catchup when they should have been in the lead to start.
Maverick Saturn @ Jun 25th 2009 1:29PM
Playing catch up with who? This isn't sony playing catchup, this is sony simply addressing the things PSP gamers have been nagging for for ages, internal storage and no umds needed.
It's not revolutionary, nor have I heard anyone say it is, but it is beneficial to those who prefer to download rather then have pointless umds all over the place.
If they were playing catch up or trying to be revolutionary, PSPgo would have a built in cam, two analogue nubs, touchscreen, IM with a mini keyboard or on screen keyboard, better graphics, and god knows what else.
