As PlayStation Portable morphs into the all-digital
PSP Go system, many consumers might be wondering just how much space they will need to set aside for each future downloadable title. Sony representative Al de Leon spoke to Joystiq recently at an event in NYC about the storage issue, saying most titles will average around "600-800MB in size." This means, de Leon further added, that the PSP Go's 16GB capacity -- without any additional memory unit -- could hold up to an "average of 17-18 games." Considering the Go can handle an extra 16GB of M2 storage, the number of games could easily be doubled.
Although 700MB is the point we should be expecting most games to gravitate towards, there will still be other titles that will be far below this mark or even way above it. Smaller scale titles like
Patapon 2 (which is less than 400MB) for example, could take as little as half the average footprint. Others, like the recently released PSOne classic
Final Fantasy VII (takes up 1.3GB), could be nearly double this number.

When are they gonna start putting new releases up for download? I want to buy Rock Band Unplugged, but not on UMD.
Cody @ Jun 25th 2009 3:06PM
Meanwhile, DSi takes SDHC cards up to 32GB.
Just sayin...

What does that have to do with PSP game downloads? Oh ... I get it now. You are just doing some light afternoon trolling. Carry on.
Deaddy @ Jun 25th 2009 3:10PM
Speaking of memory cards, Sony are dicks for switching the memory stick format on us. I already invested in two normal sticks for my PSP 2000, now they want me to buy another format. I refuse! If I ever get a Go I'll have to live with the 16GB onboard.

I agree with you 100% I'm not sure why they hell they switched formats as I also have an 8GB memory stick. I'm not sure if the new standard is smaller or if you can get an adapter to use the old format. But, I also refuse to buy another memory stick format if I get a GO.
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Jun 25th 2009 3:43PM
its kinda the same reason sony put memory stick pro duo in the psp in the first place..
$ $ $
sony owns memory stick, including memory stick pro duo and now M2..
they want you to buy their products.
they dont make extra money if you bought a SD card.
Sly @ Jun 25th 2009 4:11PM
guys, i think there were a couple reasons for that. M2's actually cost less than normal memory stick pro duos. and sony said that it was more meant for new customers, not aimed at older customers as much. and lastly, since it's smaller, i guess it let them use less space for the memory.
and joystiq, while you may be able to buy a PSP3000 and a 16GB memory stick for cheaper than this, you can't get 32GB without using one of those mini SD adapters.
NaeemTHM @ Jun 25th 2009 2:36PM
I would totally buy this if it was a phone. I'm dying for a dedicated gaming cellphone*
*that's not a taco and is made by either Nintendo, Sony, or....ummm....the guys that made the first Xbox >___>

PSPhone.
Do it, Sony!
Dirty @ Jun 25th 2009 2:52PM
I would probably buy a zune phone.
Heavytoka @ Jun 25th 2009 2:38PM
I'll probably buy this just because I travel a lot and don't have the room to carry UMD's and a Bulkier 3000 with me.

What about GT? Or MGS? They would both beat FF's 1.3 GB I am sure.
zaphodb42 @ Jun 25th 2009 2:47PM
Yamauchi said GT is going to be about 1GB

Metal Gear Solid is only around 800mb
Alistair Azimuth PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Jun 25th 2009 3:12PM
I'm pretty sure he means the new metal gear solid peacewalker game not the original that you can get off the PSN.
Professor Lario @ Jun 25th 2009 2:43PM
Does this device look painfully small? Maybe the model just has big hands..
NaeemTHM @ Jun 25th 2009 2:46PM
No it's SMALL, like just a hair bigger than the iPod Touch small.
But I don't really see that as a bad thing. Sire you're missing out on that giant gorgeous screen the original PSP had, but now it's far more portable.
The original PSP was kind of a pain to throw in my pocket and take with me.
Reuben @ Jun 25th 2009 2:46PM
I was thinking that same thing.
Crazy-008 @ Jun 25th 2009 2:47PM
funny you mention that. I've heard this is actually uncomfortably small, and it is somewhat of a pain to hold/play. hopefully it will be something that people can get used to and not notice anymore.
bigd7387 @ Jun 25th 2009 2:46PM
Yeah I'll pass. The 3000 is fine for me but I am pretty confident that Sony may have really screwed themselves this time, even more so than with the PS3. With todays economy and Sony's bonehead after bonehead moves they may be going the way of the dodo. I've got an 8gb memory card and I use it for movies and music and I game with the UMD like almost all of the PSP users, so again Sony screws it's loyal users in favor of another demographic that doesn't want their product to begin with. Hell the PSPGO doesn't even have a touch screen or motion controls, can anyone figure out why Sony hates itself so much? Or does Steve Jobs and Bill Gates give Howard Stringer secret advice on how to screw yourself in business.
Mr_Ahh @ Jun 25th 2009 4:11PM
now you see what you did right there, I almost thought you said you own a 3000. But what you really wrote was die sony die.
Old_Snake @ Jun 25th 2009 2:46PM
That does look really small, but the screen looks nice and bright though. Still, wow, that looks so small
NaeemTHM @ Jun 25th 2009 2:54PM
Hey it's still not Gameboy Micro small. Which was ludicrously small!
Zexion_VI @ Jun 25th 2009 2:47PM
Well, looks like that 16GB might fill up fast for me. I already own a ton of PSP games on UMD. Is there some kind of Memory Stick Duo slot or something?
SourceJR @ Jun 25th 2009 2:52PM
form the above post
"Considering the Go can handle an extra 16GB of M2 storage, the number of games could easily be doubled."
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Jun 25th 2009 3:45PM
you have to buy a new memory stick format i think.
UNREAL @ Jun 25th 2009 2:53PM
when i ripped God of war to my memory stick, it was around 1.5gb, i think that is the biggest ive seen
sony boy @ Jun 25th 2009 3:19PM
gta is bigger. it's around 1.6 gb.
jumpshot @ Jun 25th 2009 2:53PM
This may have been answered before, but how will we move our UMD games to the memory stick? Or do I have to re-buy the games I already own? I'm sure they have thought of this, I'm only asking if anyone knows as I've been away for a while.
Vidikron @ Jun 25th 2009 3:00PM
Sony announced just after their PSP Go reveal at E3 that they are going to have some sort of plan for people with UMDs that are buying the PSP Go, but that they weren't ready to reveal the details yet. They did say their plan would be revealed before the PSP Go is released.
jumpshot @ Jun 26th 2009 10:16AM
Good to hear. Thanks for the info Vidikron. I just hope it's not some lame "get a portion of what you paid back" trade in program.
David Black @ Jun 25th 2009 2:56PM
Thanks to Joystiq for pointing out that an average game size of 700 MB can include games that are significantly larger and smaller than the average. Since, you know...that is what the very definition of an average would imply. *facepalms*
David Black @ Jun 25th 2009 2:57PM
Sony has said they will be launching a "goodwill campaign" to allow for this but they haven't provided details. I expect those to be announced at either Gamescon in Europe or the Tokyo Games Show.
David Black @ Jun 25th 2009 2:59PM
My comment was supposed to be directed at Jumpshot.
Damn broken comments system....
TheDemiurge @ Jun 25th 2009 3:10PM
Can you store downloaded games on the PS3? That way you don't have to worry about memory space and you can just swap out the games on your PSP at any time by remotely accessing your PS3.
whylekat @ Jun 25th 2009 3:10PM
700-800megs? oh is that all...?? great so this is pretty much worthless unless you have a dedicated wifi connection, which I believe majority of people don't. Unless of course you wanna stand in a gamestop at some stupid kiosk for 15-20 minutes while 700megs transfers over..
sounds ridiculously worthless.. How much is this thing again?? oh, overpriced.. that's right. makes sense.
Especially considering the earlier post where Sony rep stated that they're charging more just because they can! even tho it's significantly cheaper to build then the reg PSP.. but it costs us consumers more... friggin' jerkss!
Girugamuk (Moptimus Slimed) @ Jun 25th 2009 3:14PM
hey, at least you aren't looking like an idiot waggling all over the place, amirite?
SmoothC911 @ Jun 25th 2009 3:30PM
actually you can do that or simply connect to a PC & download them using their free Media Go application they announced at E3 (it is live as of then). I plan on downloading them while I do other things.
Also, I doubt I'll replace my 1000 since I have a lot invested in accessories (none of which look like they'd work with the Go)
whylekat @ Jun 25th 2009 4:04PM
@ smooth
That's not so terrible then, but still means u need to keep up to 16 gigs of games or more on your HD. Which is equally dumb.
Mr_Ahh @ Jun 25th 2009 4:14PM
sooo whylekat do you normally put on your they are such losers tone then completely eat yours words directly after?
whylekat @ Jun 25th 2009 4:24PM
Eat my words? Are you braindead? I admitted to information that I didn't know, then I said it's just as dumb that with PSP-GO you need to have 2 copies of all your games. That's retarded. It would never fly with any other system unless you were pirating software.

I hope they get better bandwidth. It takes me about 15 minutes to download a 100 meg demo, plus install time on the current PSP.
