Sony to talk 'a lot more' about motion controller at Develop Conference
According to the official programme for this year's Develop Conference (a UK soiree for game devs), the recently totally confirmed PlayStation Motion Controller will be a highlight of a keynote titled "PlayStation: Cutting Edge Technologies." Specifically, attendees are being told to "expect to hear a lot more about the new PS3 controller shown at E3, together with vision processing and advanced graphics techniques in the PS3 libraries" during a presentation by SCEE staff.
The keynote description also makes mention of "several real-world examples of such techniques as used in recent and soon to be released PS3 and PSP titles from both Sony Computer Entertainment first party and external developers," but don't take that to mean "OMG actual games using motion control;" it's referring to the aforementioned "adavanced graphics techniques," which should still be pretty ... and pretty ace. The conference runs July 14 through 16 in Brighton.

There have been amazing advances in the world of teledildonics.

I heard that word for the first time today and this is the third time I've seen it, in totally different mediums... Strange how that works!

psp titles? =/
Voshempa @ Jun 25th 2009 8:14PM
I think they mean that the techniques that Sony is capable of and/or using will be shown in PSP titles. Not meaning the use of the motion controller, but of the other technologies and techniques.

Remember that the Motion Control uses the PSEye and that Richard Marks is behind the development. Part of what they'll show is based on techniques with the PSEye and the PSP Eye. So on top of showing more of the Motion Control they will probably delve into games using the Eye for both systems such as EyePet for PS3 and Invizimals for PSP (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/impressions-invizimals-psp/) which were not as heavily featured in the presentations at E3 (they were on the show floor).

Saweet. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the device. I feel that the media is overlooking it somewhat, with Natal being praised and cuddled. Gaming is three things: you, a controlling device, and the screen. I don't like when two of those are used as one.
ArchiGamer @ Jun 25th 2009 8:17PM
Agreed.
Sony isn't going overboard like Microsoft, not even Nintendo.
LordToastington @ Jun 25th 2009 8:20PM
Call me an old fogie, but motion controls just don't do anything for me. I can see where it would be amusing for awhile, but I'd rather just use my joypad. Although I will say that from what I've seen, Sony's controller looks to be the most enjoyable, and that's coming from a 360 owner.
Wiizer @ Jun 25th 2009 9:22PM
I don't think that Sony is going to do a publicity stunt with it until... you know, the product's ACTUALLY DONE.
I wish Microsoft would do the same thing.
noloc.odnalor @ Jun 25th 2009 8:52PM
Cool. Hopefully this will mean helping 3rd parties have an easier time with PS3 (and PSP) development.
Neuromancer @ Jun 25th 2009 8:55PM
I'm not thrilled about Natal or this.. But at least with Natal, you can pretend to be a PreCrime agent and swish through menus with your hand.
nbdy @ Jun 25th 2009 9:17PM
You can do that with eye toy to. Have you seen the demo for that eyepet game (not sure if thats the name). It proved that the eye toy is capable of doing alot of what natal advertised. The only real thing that the natal showed that was different then the eye toy was that the ricochet game allowed you to move forward.
PN04 @ Jun 25th 2009 9:25PM
you can do that with the EYeye already, they just never implemented it with the XMB. I supposed they figured no one wanted to use it that way.
vask @ Jun 25th 2009 9:54PM
they got something good going for this it just depends how they execute it. Like every other "cool" perhipheral they made they always do a horrible job pushing it out to the public.
With the Ps3 price drop rumored to be coming around sooner or later, id consider a few options.
- First off eliminate that 120gb sku or change it, its pointless really they should make the higher priced sku and include
The Motion control
One DS controller
The Eyetoy,
HDMI cable (yes they're not that expensive nowadays)
A Game that motion control will be compatible with(something similar to what we saw in E3 with higher production values prefably.)
Since the eyetoy will have a microphone, that should resolve the headset issue by speaking into the camera instead of putting on that stupid mic(also assuming that we will get an ingame chat feature and party system). assuming a MSRP of $399.99 (after eventual price drop)
Then make a cheaper sku 80gb include
a USB headset(if they want to really get fancy a bluetooth headset)
an HDMI cable
One DS Controller
Final Fantasy 7 for PS1 voucher?
the system can be the optional unit for people who don't care for the gimmick and have the OPTION to not use it this one can go for an MSRP $299.99
i think if they did something like that it could help push the "motion controller" and also encourage a more active network(also assuming they manage to get the price point lower and party + chat system on the go).
mr nimblewick @ Jun 25th 2009 10:02PM
I think the motion controller should be in the cheaper unit to go after Nintendo's audience. Otherwise they are marketing it toward a "core" audience that doesn't care.
vask @ Jun 25th 2009 10:07PM
thats very true, that actually makes the most sense
but only issue is that we know sony is gonna be charging alot for the tech and its already gonna be tough to manage a price drop as it is so i was thinking of something that might actually be reasonable for them to do with their system. but yea if they can put out a cheaper system with the motion control then that would be awesome.
but realistically i doubt that it will happen.
Autopsy15 @ Jun 25th 2009 10:17PM
@ mr nimblewick
I'm part of the core audience and I care. I've always wanted to actually do the hacking and slashing instead of hitting buttons. From what I've seen, Sony's motion controller seems much more capable of handling advanced gameplay techniques as apposed to the Wii's waggling which seems best suited for spastic children.
Extinction @ Jun 26th 2009 4:22AM
You already can use PSEye or Eyetoy as a microphone
Draco @ Jun 26th 2009 1:43PM
Where do you plan on plugging in the USB headset? wouldn't that tether you to your console...?
rruss79 @ Jun 25th 2009 10:20PM
I am betting that a lot of people do not have the PS3eye. So pulling a number out of my arse, I would say that the PS3eye 50 bucks, one Wand 30 bucks. Wand with analog stick because we know you need something to move around within the environment. Basically, you end up paying the same thing as a Wiimote and numchuck but you have the additional cost of the Camera. Add motion + to the equation and the Sony solution is about 30 bucks more than the Wii solution.
ladykiller @ Jun 26th 2009 2:32AM
"we just painted the wii-mote black but we'll still call it original"
there, got that anticipation out of the way for yous
Chenchi @ Jun 26th 2009 12:44PM
We don't need it.

i like Sony's motion controllers. First day buy if they have good software bundled in.

every time i see that screenshot, i cringe. the wrist angle between the onscreen warrior and the real life person doesn't match. the sword is pointing in the wrong direction between the onscreen and the person. for something that claims to be millimeter accurate, it seems like a major faux pas.
