Moonwalker: the video game legacy of Michael Jackson

If you were an arcade rat back in 1990, then you probably spent time playing, or at least listening to Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, which featured the singer doing battle against baddies and rescuing children by performing dance moves and using "Dance Magic" powers, i.e. spinning around and screaming "HOOOO!". Yes, for real. The game featured simultaneous three-player action, and includes a robotic MJ that appears when Jackson meets up with Bubbles the Chimpanzee.
True story -- and there's more. Read on after the break for more about Moonwalker and a video clip of vintage arcade play, along with the other video games Jackson appeared in.
[Thanks for suggesting this, Judd and Niko]
Moonwalker featured synthesized MIDI versions of some of Jackson's biggest hits, including the signature tune "Smooth Criminal" (which also was the source for the signature suit and fedora outfit you wear in the game), "Bad," "Beat It," "Another Part Of Me," and "Billie Jean." Although there's a graveyard level in Moonwalker where "Thriller" plays as your Dance Magic tune, they never made a Thriller video game, which was surprising because it was Jackson's biggest hit.
The game was also released on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, although these are generally considered to be far inferior to the arcade version due to gameplay issues. Other 8- and 16-bit versions appeared on everything from the Amiga to the ZX Spectrum. Own a copy? You might want to hang onto it. People are already selling versions of it on eBay, including the full arcade cabinet.
If you play the game through to the end, you'll see what amounts to an advertisement for Michael's music, and a credit claiming that he came up with the concept and story for the game, which, given the plot, isn't that hard to believe. It also made him one of the few musical acts to have his own arcade game, alongside Journey and Aerosmith in Revolution X.
It's worth wondering if Jackson will ever appear in a video game again, given the court battles in his last few years. It's surprising that a DDR-style Jackson-branded game was never released. Although, given the fact that we're seeing The Beatles: Rock Band nearly 49 years after the band was formed, there's always tomorrow. EEE-HEEEEEE!

Goodnight, Sweet Prince.
Jay Voorhees @ Jun 26th 2009 3:05PM
Don't you mean the artist formerly alive as Michael Jackson?
Jay Voorhees @ Jun 26th 2009 3:21PM
Oh come on, I love thriller just as much as the next guy. Couldn't not take advantage of the "Prince" reference. I guess downvoting a death joke is easy as ABC, 123.
Ch0ppa @ Jun 26th 2009 3:31PM
Why the hell is everyone boo-hoo-ing like MJ was the greatest person on earth?? I bet that if it was the guy down the street that was accused of MULTIPLE child molestations yall wouldnt be acting the same. Just cuz his music WAS popular a while ago doesnt turn him into a great human being. The fact is some SHIT went down on that Neverland ranch that we will never know about, but you bet he is suffering for it now!!! Thank god he can never be around a child again!
Tiptup300 @ Jun 26th 2009 3:31PM
Heh, you hear they're having his funeral out in the dessert, yeah, his body isn't allowed within 100 miles of children's schools.
Gun Barrier @ Jun 26th 2009 3:37PM
Wow....just...wow....
Snowblind @ Jun 26th 2009 3:37PM
@Ch0ppa
None of those claims were ever proven, and most of the charges came from parents who seemed to be after money, rather than their childrens well being.
Either way, now isn't really the time to be discussing things in his personal life that may, or may not have happened, and that certainly shouldn't discount all the great things he did.
whylekat @ Jun 26th 2009 3:40PM
@ choopla
he was never officially proven guilty of child molestation. It never even went to court. And he stil sold more albums then anyone on the planet.. So it's dumb to say he was popular yrs ago. He's still popular now, huge in Europe. And even more so after his death. His record sales nearly tripled in the past 24 hrs.
Jay Voorhees @ Jun 26th 2009 3:45PM
His music WAS popular Ch0ppa? Go to one dance club/kareoke bar/nightlife establishment of any kind and you'll hear Billie Jean, Beat It or any of his other tons of hits any given night. MJ is the '80s version of the beatles, they just dont make em like that anymore. Today's music is lower than shit compared to the records he made.
Quattro @ Jun 26th 2009 3:53PM
@Ch0ppa
He only released the best selling album of all time right? He can't be that popular.

I happen to have a couple child molesters that live on my street. None of them made Thriller
/thread
ps: there was never any concrete evidence anyway. Did he have a disturbing relationship with some kids? Yes, but everyone confuses disturbing with sexual. JUst because he laid in bed with a boy doesn't mean he molested him.
Jimbotron @ Jun 26th 2009 4:49PM
@ch0ppa: I find it strange the Michael "molested" a kid in the early 90s and instead of pursuing a criminal case against him, the parents filed a civil lawsuit against him. For money. Nevermind trying to get him put away so he could never "molest" another kid again. Oh, no. Let's sue one of the most popular and wealthiest celebrities for money and get rich.
Real convincing that the claims were true.
And he was found innocent the second time he was accused. So as far as any of us know, apart from being a bit strange and a psychologically regressed 10-year-old, he is no more a child molester than you are.

Noshino @ Jun 26th 2009 4:56PM
Ch0ppa,
Seriously, I have been pissed off the last few years about how the media has treated MJ. Hell, even MTV, which rose to fame THANKS to MJ, treated him like crap.
First of all, he is the only person to have an album with sales of over 100 million, that alone is a remarkable achievement. Then is the charity work which was quite big.
As for his lawsuits, neither case was concrete enough. The funny part is that for both cases he decided to pay the other parties, and they shut their mouths right after....caring parent my ass. Some say that paying proves that he is guilty, but some people just don't like to be bothered with long procedures. Its worth pointing out that there is a comment by Presley in which she mentions that it was her that convinced Michael to just pay them instead of going through it....
Even then, every fucking celebrity is coming out to defend him, from Elizabeth Taylor, Bill Maher, hell, if Im not wrong even Larry King was defending him, do you people really think that they would come out to defend him if they had the slight feeling that he was a pedophile? and these are people that knew him better than most of us
On top of that, he was very influential, specially his songs, with lyrics such as the ones of Black and White, They Don't Care About Us, and others. And there is his extensive charity work. Even go as far as to get so many celebrities for collaborations such as We Are The World.
Seriously, this guy was a legend, amongst Elvis and The Beatles, and maybe even more famous than them. Such a shame to not only see his fall, but also how horrible the media can be.
zero2dash @ Jun 26th 2009 5:07PM
If you molest children and claim you didn't do it, do you:
A) Pay off their families to "shut them up" and avoid court
or
B) Hire a lawyer and fight the charges to prove your innocence
We all know what Michael Jackson did.
I'm sorry - if someone accuses me of a crime, let alone of one as serious as child molestation - I'm going to fight until I'm in the poor house and have to hire a public defender to prove my innocence.
I find it very questionable that someone who is charged of these crimes just rolls over and pulls out his checkbook; that's all I'm saying. I refuse to defend a human being who does just that when confronted with those allegations.

@Ch0ppa aka Valnen from Kotaku
Don't you have anything better to do than troll all MJ articles? Get a life.
Kevin949 @ Jun 26th 2009 5:26PM
@zero2dash
Sure if someone accused YOU of a crime you'd fight it, but you're not popular. You're not someone who makes a living on their character. You're not someone who's success depends on the public's view of you. Think about it, a case like that is a lose-lose situation. He pays them off, he seems guilty. He continues to fight the case and would/could basically bury the people in court costs and overpriced lawyers, he looks guilty from strong-arming. Ultimately I believe that since he DID care for the kids more than anything else he just wanted the proceedings to be over with and everyone to be happy. Sure it looked bad to an extent, but no worse than the other way. Probably turned out better. He made a few families happy again and he obviously wasn't afraid to take the heat of the accusations so they could be happy. It's obvious to anyone, and especially his true fans, that all he cared about was making people happy.

If I had MJ money, people could accuse me of hiding a stash of Pre-legal Olsen twin photographic stash inside of WMDs that I procurred after orchestrating 9/11 and as long as I still had enough money to be rich as hell I'd pay them off just to avoid the hassel.
The great thing about money is that it means most tedious crap can be erased by throwing stacks of bills at it. And given how sweet I can imagine most rich celebrties are used to living, they probably have a much lower threshhold for putting up with troublesome things than us regular schmucks.
Roto13 @ Jun 26th 2009 8:29PM
I love how two days ago, calling Michael Jackson a child molester would have been a-ok. The people who spent the last 15 years openly mocking him (despite his obvious mental problems) suddenly love and respect him now that he's dead.
Oh, internet. Don't ever change.

Ridgecity @ Jun 27th 2009 1:56PM
@Ch0ppa:
Funny how when he announced he was broke, the child abuse lawsuits stopped. It's almost like they could care less about his image in exchange for a few million dollars.
Hopefully no one ever acuses you of something like that, because no one will believe you didn't do it.
Ch0ppa @ Jun 29th 2009 3:22PM
For all of you defending Michael I didnt say he WAS a child molestor. I said he was ACCUSED of molesting a child and what would happen to a normal citizen accused of the same thing that didnt have all the money he had huh? Bad thing about American justice is that it can be bought. Very few rich people in prison, mostly the poor who cant afford fancy attorneys and/or massive legal teams and strategists. Just look at OJ, is there one person in this country who doesnt believe he killed his ex and her b/f?? If you were accused of the same thing as Michael was you would be ostracized, fired from your job (assuming you have one and dont just sit around on your ass in your parents house playing video games), expelled from church or other religous group, thrown in jail with a high bond that most people could not afford, you would sit in jail for 1-2 years awaiting your trial, lose your property, your family, everything you know. Then even if you were found to be absolutely not guilty the damage would already be irreversible. So dont tell me that he didnt get special treatment cuz he was rich. And for all you suckas out there talking about album sales, he used your money to seduce little kids, so I hope everyone that has bought an MJ album feels good about that!!!!!

Memories. I spent as much time playing Moonwalker in arcades as being hassled for playing Moonwalker in arcades. It was a damned good game at the time and everyone was too embarrassed to play it.
Shame the Genesis version wasn't a half-decent port of the arcade game.
Ethan Rom @ Jun 26th 2009 4:08PM
I have to admit, I had a lot of fun playing that game too. I was just playing it with M.A.M.E. the other day. And, like you, I got made fun of for playing it. It was a great game. Say what you want about the guy, he knew how to market himself.

the genesis version of the game is it's own deal. it's not supposed to be a port of the arcade version and it's very very fun. it's sidescrolling as apposed to isometric and it's only one player. gamespot put it in their hall of fame even. please don't slam it if you haven't played it.
RIP MJ forever.

I played this game only a couple times, but still its sad that the man who brought us thriller and billie jean is dead. I just wish that people would remember him as an amazing musician and not has very controversial and the rather bad decisions he made later on.

Maybe they might do it as a legacy edition on PSN or something. (I am not being sarcastic in any way.)

Or just keep it the same. Lord knows 50 cent's done crazier shit in his video games than turning in to a giant laser-weilding robot.
