Yes, we know -- another console price drop story. Our contempt rivals your own, we assure you. However, this time around, the report comes from a source that's proven to be eerily accurate on hardware announcements in the past -- Ars Technica's unnamed "mole," a prophetic figure who managed to predict the capabilities of the PSP Go, the release of the red Resident Evil 5 Xbox 360 bundle and, most notably, last fall's universal 360 price cut.
On the Sony front, the mole is claiming that the 80GB PS3 will become scarce over the next two months, being mostly replaced by the 160GB model. As the larger model continues to sell into the fall, Sony will supposedly simultaneously announce the oft-rumored PS3 Slim and the even more oft-rumored price cut. The mole was unable to discern the exact amount that would be shaved off the price of the console, but was confident it would provide Sony with a much-needed sales boost.
For Microsoft, the mole expects the Pro system to be ushered off store shelves with the help of a few attractive Pro bundles which will crop up over the next few months. The Pro will be replaced by the 120GB Elite, which will supposedly undergo a price cut in September, followed by the release of its own bundles in October. With downloadable titles becoming a focus for both companies, turning the spotlight on consoles with larger hard drives makes sense -- but only time will tell if the Ars mole's sterling predictive reputation will persevere.

the best buy near me had some when i went to go get an arcade to replace my launch system :(
if this is true, i wonder if all the "Elites" will stay black, if there will be color options, or a name change.

I can picture MS selling two consoles , the PRO 120gb HDD & the ELITE 720GB HDD . how cool would that be ,but the price would be just to even things out a bit the PRO AT $199.99 pl. tx the ELITE at $299.99 pl. tx . but to be honest my info can be just as wrong as the moles info.we will all have to wait & see .personaly i would buy a 360 console w/ a hdd 720gb .sound like enough space to me .

we'll your gonna have to wait for that seeing as there is no such thing as a 2.5" 750GB HDD (atleast not for the public).

i mean "720GB"
how the hell did you get that figure anyway?
720p?
why would a HDD manufacturer make a 720GB HDD when it would be cheaper to make a 750GB HDD?

The PS3 price drop is inevitable, with the equally inevitable slim. There's no good reason against a 360 price-drop either, but it also just doesn't feel right. Microsoft should save their price-dropping energy for Natal, when they'll really need it to offset the cost of the extra hardware for new bundles
Unless they're either determined to start ratcheting up the pressure on Nintendo, or scared about the prospects of a $300 PS3

Gotta believe THE MOLE

Well there ya have it. Just as I had predicted many times before. If Sony's going to price drop, Microsoft is right on their heel's. So is it going to do Sony any good? No. Forgit this trash! What the heck does Joystiq know. They're going off of a Mole. That harry bump that grows on your face. In the real world though, go to IGN.com, or it might have been 1UP, please excuse. But they reported yesterday that they'd spoken with SCEE, I believe, and he'd said don't plan on it. He'd stated that the PlayStation 3 was selling very well in Europe and that they didn't mind spending the $400 because they understand the value of the PlayStation 3. I believe those who have a PlayStation 3 at this point would agree as well. They've seen the PlayStation 3 and what it was capable of, and bought it. I have a buddy whose poor as dirt, but that didn't stop him. He knew what the PS3 was capable of and bought one. To him its worth it. Those who have 360's with their PS3 are either neutral, absolutely love their PS3 and can't understand why they have a 360 other than to play Halo or Gears of War, or are just plain ignornant and would like to make sweet sweet love to Microsoft. Don't go off this Mole crap. Go off a confirmed source from a Sony rep. IGN or 1UP have that. I asked Sony to come out and clear up the confusion as I'm sure so many others did as well. Spend the money, don't sit twidling your thumbs. The media, JOYSTIQ, MSN, YAHOO, CNBC, and any other company that reports on this, they just want to make money and appease the masses. They want you to think its just too expensive. Its Hypnosis and brainwashing. Study psychology. Hypnosis isn't just what you see on TV, its convincing one through certain methods to believe what they're told. DON'T EVER EVER! GO BY ANYONES WORD ALONE! You thus become a sheep and a tool! STUDY IT OUT FOR YOUSELF! Try a PS3 if you're interested in it. You can demo one anywhere and they might even pop a game of your choice into the console at Gamestop in order to sweetin the deal at Gamestop. A place called Play & Trade in Utah does that for ANY game you want to play. Determine it yourself. Don't listen to what Joystiq tells you cause they're Xbox 360 biased. They want Microsoft to succeed and watch Sony burn. Don't even just take my word for it, consider the words read, and go determine truth for yourself. BORROW A BUDDIES IF YOU CAN! I'm sure they'd be happy to show you what the PlayStation 3 can do. A PRICE DROP IS NOT NECCESSARY! Don't let them make you believe that. If Sony price drops, and they go in the hole, then the worlds happy the PS3 is wiped off the map. For the life of me I can't figure out why anyone hates the PS3 so much. The Xbox 360 is the biggest hard drive their is and its $400. But PS2 and PSOne have amazed and pleased millions. The PlayStation 3 is also, dependable and durable hardware. JOYSTIQ needs to re-evaulte their views and their approach on games and consoles and do it the way it should be done. Supporting the PS3 and helping promote it just as much as they would the Xbox 360 and Wii.

For the $150 MS charges for a 120GB drive, you can buy an off the shelf 500GB drive for your PS3 and have $50 left over in your pocket to buy a game or to download a bunch of games from PSN. The xbox is a nickel and dime platform even though the initial purchase price is cheaper.

You are 1000% right,
they should drop the price.
I don't see how they can justify charging that much,
a drive that size wouldn't cost more than £30 in the UK (that's if you can even find one!)
Microsoft should drop the price of the 120GB HDD & replace it with a 320GB HDD - at the current £75/$140 price point.
Oh well - when they release a larger HDD, i will buy a bare 2.5" HDD & hack it so it works with the XBOX 360 - problem solved (for the minority of modders).

The 360 change doesn't sound like a price drop. Offering the Elite at the Pro price would only be a config change not a price drop.

Whenever the PS3 price cut happens, that will be crunch time. Right now, the 360 and wii are already affordable and a 50-100$ cut wont make a difference. But when the PS3 ges to 299$ it will be within range of a huge mass of consumers, at the same time as GT5, GOW3 and Uncharted 2 are in sight. Either they start thrashing the wii / 360 in sales or else its third place for the PS3 this generation

I think the PSP Go will allow Sony to make enough profit to lower the price of the PS3. At least 50 USD. Then Sony drop the PSP Go price by 25 to 50 USD. To again generate profit to lower the PS3 price by an additional 50 USD when God of War 3 releases in March. Just my thoughts on the Sony side. Of coarse this plan would lead to another price drop 2 years after that.

PS3 I get, but how low is the 360 going to go? Will we honestly see a 150 dollar Arcade SKU? I doubt it, but that would be pretty mindblowing for everyone involved, including the casuals, for whom this would be done.

Just bought an xbox360 wired controller for my laptop. Works fantastically. I have a PS3 and use my laptop with HDMI out hooked up to a 50" tv to play PC/Xbox games. I get the best of both worlds and many games I can play in 1080p on the laptop that I can't on either xbox or ps3.

I'm just going to say something, because apparently there are a lot of stupid people out there.
YOU CAN EASILY PUT YOUR OWN 2.5" HARD DRIVE IN THE 360 JUST LIKE YOU CAN ON THE PS3!!!
The only difference is that the software limits it to 120gb, so you can't put any huge drives on their but you can still buy a $40 drive on Newegg and pop it in there.
There, it's in all caps even, so maybe now people will figure it out. But probably not...

If you do this, MS can detect it, as you are cloning someone else's drive. And it's not as easy as the PS3, where you don't have to download a hacking tool from the net. Plus, you have to select the right drive, as only a small number of them work.

NO YOU CANNOT EASILY REPLACE YOUR HDD IN THE X360!!!
You CAN replace it - but NOT easily. It's hard, breaks warranty, and opens you to all kinds of potential troubles in the future.
Unlike on the PS3 where it's EXPLAINED IN THE MANUAL exactly how because the customer is encouraged to actually buy the drive that fits him/herself best and not to line the pockets of the console manufacturer.
There's good and there's bad about all consoles this generation. But I get so sick and tired of flat out lies about them. Wanna emphasize the advantages of the X360, PS3 or Wii - go right ahead. Wanna lie and claim that something is cool on one of them when it's not - please shut up ;p

More misinformation.
It is NOT difficult to do. Anyone that has enough know-how to pop open their PS3 and replace the hard drive can easily do it on the 360. Yeah, it's not in the manual, so freaking what? You just read the instructions online rather than in the manual, which is probably where most people read the instructions for their PS3 anyway (seriously wtf still reads manuals nowadays with the internet around?).
It does NOT void your warranty. That doesn't even make any sense. You're only opening up the separate hard drive ENCLOSURE, which you don't even send to microsoft when you have warranty work done on the console.

I would have said, "360 price cut? no way. They just had one" before reading the article but getting rid of the pro and replacing it with the elite makes quite a lot of sense and should have been that way in the first place.

Sony will drop the price when it's good for them financially as a company, not when these analysts tell them they will.

MS just needs to go ahead and make external memory fully compatible. Wouldn't it be cool just to plug in an external hdd you have laying around and be able to save games on it, view media, etc. We all know that this will never happen though...unfortunately.

I will buy a PS3 in August. If that's when the price cut will happen.
