So it seems the £230 price tag is confirmed, I was hoping it was only a place holder.
Oh well, I can wait for a price drop.

And the Zune cost's bugger all in the UK, cos it's not available.
Still the ZuneHD look's kinda sexy, wanting some of that Tegra action.

@Cosmo

Not a very fair example. In this case, gamers' intuition proved to be correct, and the PSP Go doesn't seem to be doing well, but companies may have a good reason for not listening to begin with. After all, the best possible example is the Wii. How many gamers predicted that to be a failure when that was first announced?

Sony went overboard in a lot of aspects, but I can understand why they thought the PSP Go may be a success. Form factor has proven to be incredibly important in the past and downloadable games has seen a large surge in popularity this generation thanks to PSN, XBLA, and WiiWare/VC. Sony probably had the idea for a while and thought that this was the perfect time to take the risk.

If they are proven right, then their risk will pay off. If they are proven wrong, well, they're not losing much (relatively) since the PSP wasn't doing well anyway.

The PSP go is decent but it doesn't have an edge, nothing that really sets it apart from the existing PSP line ... yeah its smaller ... and it has internal memory instead of a UMD and its got bluetooth .... let me rephrase it has nothing worthwhile that sets it apart from the existing PSP line to any degree that is warranting of their price hike =P

If It had like a built in camera or came in at a lower price point than the existing psp .... I mean the entire reason they are launching the GO is to get people to adopt Downloadable games over Retail so they can kill off the retail middleman .... and it just seems like Sony is setting it up to fail at every turn ~.~

I enjoyed my PSP once modding was in the picture.

Out-right, it saved it from a closet existence.

So, the fact that the PSP Go is basically 1/3 of everything of the old PSP, and COSTS MORE, means Sony doesn't care about you, Timmy, the dog, or the kid down the block with cancer.

It's just a terrible project at the cost of self-respect. And for a Japanese company, no-less, to take this leap is not fair treatment to their customers.

I wonder what the retail mark up is on the PSP Go. Retailers generally make like $1 off of a system sale (former Game Crazy manager). They're willing to put up with that because they get a chance to sell accessories and games to the customer. It could be that due to the games being sold over the PSN, retailers are attempting to actually make some money off of the sale. Or maybe Sony just has it's head up it's ass.

oh, now I think I get it...

By making the new PSP more expensive than it actually is, it makes the PS3 look like a better deal by comparison.

BRILLIANT!

I cracked the code.

This is why software development costs were dropped so drastically. Sony is charging the customer more upfront so the premium can cover the lost revenue from the software development.

SOOOOOOO! More money on sale of systems, and then more of a cut from games sold. Because, unless Sony was shot in the head, they won't drop the retail price of games. Just the development costs.

DOUBLE WAMMY!

They NEED to bring the PSP go price down too £120-£150 range.

All the Go does is make getting PSP games harder for Family/casual gamers.
What If you don't have a internet connection? how they supposed to DL games?

I bet half the people won't even know the Go! Is "Download only" for games

I still have the origional PSP and have no interest in this new one or any of the others, I have yet to see Sony make full use of the one I have right now so god knows what rubbish they will pile onto this one.
Location Free player on PSP fail, Go messenger Fail, PSPGo Epic Fail.

Next year Sony will be promoting a new PSP, god knows what they will name it something stupid like PSPGodHelpUsWeNeedMoreMoneyBecauseWereTooStupidToDropThePriceOfThePS3 (Sony if your reading this thanks for replacing my 1 1/2 year old psp more than 7 times and never actually fixing the problem and just to let you know My PSP is enjoying a life of homebrew.)

How many pre-orders to Grainger Games get anyway? - have been to the one in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK many times - never bought or pre-ordered anything from there - or even thought of this and I'm guessing I'm not alone, there is a Gamestation and Game (at least three nearby) - people pre-order things there as they get points or bonus offers. Grainger Games usually offer nothing, nor do they stock special editions of games so them having no pre-orders for the PSP Go is not very representative of demand as a whole for this, let alone any other item in the UK.

I thought the point of sony releasing the PSP GO was to deviate from UMD and attempt to counter piracy, when in fact they may have made the original PSP's more popular now.

sony is a bit out of their minds...
lower cost to manufacture, higher cost to consumer.
millions saved on PSP game manufacturing costs, same cost to consumer w/ less ownership of the game now.

the PSP has failed compared to the DS, so they thought of releasing a more expensive model now?

getting rid of the UMD has nothing to do with getting rid of piracy its to lock the game to your personal console and kill the used game market, as well as shave off their production/shipping prices and don't expect to see any savings trickle down to you as a consumer.

locking games to 1 console is a way to combat piracy.
only allowing a specific downloaded game file to play on 1 console is considered DRM and piracy combating.

of course it doesn't stop it though.

It really is too bad because if someone released a cell phone with the PSP GO! form factor I would be all over it. Give it the iPhone OS or Android with a higher res touchscreen and tegra processor with some AAA games to take advantage of it and you've got me sold. Oh yeah and a second analog nub.

Or even if they made a system where they had 2 versions like how the iphone and ipod touch are. Make the games compatible with both but let the people want a true all in one device get the cell phone version with monthly fees like all phones and another that just has wifi.

The iphone is ok but for some games (tower defense, strategy, RPG, puzzle, card/board games) but I want physical controls for most platformers, first person shooters, racing games and third person action games) Also They should have an iPhone premium games store so the AAA titles dont get lost in the mix with the homebrew style games.

Why one of the big 3 doesn't want to make a true handheld game system/cell phone I don't understand. Or even if they made a system where they had 2 versions like how the iphone and ipod touch are.

Ngage didn't count because the design was horrible, the d-pad sucked all those cellphone number keys sucked. It had all of one or two good games one was out on the playstation like a decade before (pandemoneum).

its hard to fully support 2 consoles and do it right i think.
sometimes concentrating on 1 console, instead of attempting to
support 2 or 3 (ps2) or 4 (pspGO) allows for a better experience on
that 1 console.

when you support more consoles we the consumers get less in return
and have less available for each system.

do we want more systems with less games?
or less systems with more games?
balance is the key and I think sony got lost somewhere in the past 5
years.

@sk8monroe81 and everybody else

Handhelds aren't consoles...by definition.

–noun
1. a television, phonograph, or radio cabinet designed to stand on the floor rather than on a table or shelf.
2. the control or monitoring unit of a computer, containing the keyboard or keys, switches, etc.
3. a desklike structure containing the keyboards, pedals, etc., by means of which an organ is played.
4. a small cabinet standing on the floor and having doors.

In other words, consoles are big.

ummm..
u realize that they are technically called
'handheld gaming consoles'
or ' handheld gaming machinces'

not a 'handheld'

and your definitions dont even define what the psp or ds is anyway:
i think youre an internet copy and paster?

" 2. the control or monitoring unit of a computer, containing the keyboard or keys, switches, etc. "
that doesnt sound like a handheld console to me now...
why dont you look up the definition of console or computer and there you will find the defintion of psp and ds somewhere...

DOUCHE. or i meant DOOOCCCHE' (pronounced do-shay in Websters dictionary)

lol

I'm pretty sure this is just the classic business scheme where you ask for something ridiculous so that when people find out what the real price (still a rip-off) is, they actually think they're getting a deal. "We're cutting $100 off the price of our new system, let's see Nintendo do that!"

i just dont get it at all. why are sony doing this thing where they 'expect' people to pay premiums like this, this little psp is possibly gonna be almost (£50 cheaper) than a ps3 in the uk at the estimated price. its plain stupid. sony could end up scaring customers away. all in all they'l be in the shit. and sega will make a come back :)

Theres three or four massive problems i see here (especially in the uk).
The first one is price £230 is to much anyone who wants to pay that is mildly insane really. The second one is the new memory stick format, making all of your previous psp memory sticks useless for the new one once you run out of space. The third one is surely re-sale value? Since now you have to download games direct from sony you can't sell them on?

Someone tell me if i'm wrong on any of those points?

It seems like a nice little system... but not at that price.

All i can think is that they are expecting some heavy retailer discounting. I know games in the UK often get discounted well below the (frankly ridiculous) RRP, but i'm not so sure about systems.

At that price I'd go for an 8gb ipod touch and a DS.

It is indeed an epic fail - one of two things is about to happen - PSP will disappear and hide in embarrassment at how it got screwed by it's creator. Remember the Neo Geo pocket? or the ngage?

OR Sony will have to quickly make this alot cheaper than the PSP 3000 or it's just not worth the purchase - a more expensive product for less features? GREAT!

Think I'd rather get a PSP 3000 or a 360 since I already have a PS3.

Sony normally listen to their customers, just it normally takes a year too long..
