Obsidian confirms the cancellation of Aliens RPG [Update: Sega agrees]

[Update: And, not with a bang but a whimper, Sega has confirmed the cancellation of Aliens RPG, telling Giant Bomb, "At this point, SEGA has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG. The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release. We plan to continue working with the Aliens franchise and ask fans to be patient and stay tuned for more information about what SEGA has coming out for the Aliens series of games, starting with the upcoming Alien vs. Predator game. We are very excited about and focused on Alien vs. Predator, which promises gamers a fantastic single player game and an equally compelling multiplayer experience. We are confident that it provides all the excitement and fun that the Aliens and Predator fans are looking for!"]
[Original: Finally, Aliens RPG's will it, won't it dance has come to an official, if disappointing, end. We were hoping the many, many rumors of its cancellation would be for naught, but a moderator at the Obsidian forums has confirmed that the project is dead; "unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development."
Hopefully the same isn't true for Aliens: Colonial Marines, or that would leave Sega with only Aliens vs Predator in development. The Japanese publisher further confirmed the project's termination to GameSpot, saying, "At this point, Sega has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG."]

Cancellations make me a sad face-hugger
Nightbug @ Jun 27th 2009 1:27PM
An Obsidian cancellation is almost better than an Obsidian release.
Snowblind @ Jun 27th 2009 2:02PM
Obsidian have made some great games.. usually very buggy, but I think in every case their publisher has forced them to release their games, clearly before they're ready.
Massmass @ Jun 27th 2009 5:43PM
Almost every developer has publisher pressures so them consistently folding under the pressure confirms them as a so so developer.
After they cock-cobbled Kotor II I simply have no love loss for them anymore. Still, I'm all for them redeeming themselves...
finnith @ Jul 1st 2009 3:52PM
They had a year for that game. ONE YEAR is nearly not enough to make a game even if it's a sequel. With two years KOTOR 2 would've been excellent you can tell.
WINterfang @ Jun 27th 2009 12:36PM
I think it's better that way, Alpha Protocol looks pretty cool and I want then to focus on that first.
Levi @ Jun 27th 2009 12:59PM
wasn't this just announced like a month ago? And they're already canceling it?
devilsei @ Jun 27th 2009 1:09PM
Naw, the game was announced at least a year ago.
And its a shame they are canceling the game, would of been interesting to see how they'd handle an RPG based on the Aliens series.
WINterfang @ Jun 27th 2009 1:16PM
There's still hope, if the AVP game do well to SEGA standard and Alpha Protocol get's good ratings then SEGA may give the game the green flag.
Take in mind that SEGA has an agreement for at least 3 games on the Aliens Franchise.

Careful wording: They never state that the project is cancelled outright, they only say that they are no longer working on it.
Not that I have my hopes up; I can't imagine anyone else I'd trust to develop a decent Aliens RPG.
doctorbeepers @ Jun 27th 2009 1:51PM
im soooo disappointed this game wont be happenin
its bout time a true next gen aliens game be developed
ignfan69 @ Jun 27th 2009 1:57PM
I'm shocked they would cancel an RPG based on a 25 year old movie, although didn't it sort of sound like a recipe for disaster?
Shagittarius @ Jun 27th 2009 2:11PM
Game over man.
WINterfang @ Jun 27th 2009 2:22PM
Wow that was as original as a Vegeta Tribute one youtube with Wake me up form Evanescence playing on the background.

It was unusually apt, so I think we can afford to give it a pass.
Cellien @ Jun 27th 2009 4:53PM
"Apt" the newest of the overly used fad words on the internet to make you sound smart. :) Not saying you aren't in particular, I'm just pointing out I see that word way too often these days online.
I think around 2006 "asinine" made the rounds pretty heavily. :P
Cellien @ Jun 27th 2009 3:43PM
There is also a DS game version in the works.

AWWW...this SUCKS!!!! @ssholes...yeah, I guess Sega knows what titles to stick to making games...Sega Tennis, Sega Genisis Hits, Sega garbage... blah blah...
Alex @ Jun 28th 2009 11:52AM
I'd wish they would release this game instead on Alpha Protocol
xraybravo @ Jun 28th 2009 1:15PM
good idea we don't need another failed MMO
ChomskyKnows @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:07PM
was this an MMO? thought it was just an RPG. at any rate, an Aliens RPG just sounded weird to begin with...
