EA reveals Battlefield 1943 release date [update]

Hey, remember when we gave away all those codes of Battlefield 1943 just after E3 and there was a bit of confusion surrounding when you could use them -- er, ya know, actually play the game? Don't worry, we were confused too, but according to June's official EA Newsletter, the long awaited online shooter from DICE will be hitting your digital store shelves on July 9th.

Interestingly, the game description no longer lists a PC version, making the delayed iteration of Battlefield 1943 that much less of a possibility -- a strange one at that, considering the franchise's PC roots. Either way, those of you that snagged codes for the game back in early June should start getting ready for battle by talking to our friends in the JPAG and setting up a game night. Talk about two tastes that taste great together.

Update: DICE producer Gordon Van Dyke said today on EA's UK forums that "We are close to confirming our dates (Xbox 360 date & PS3 date), but still need to settle a few minor things." Looks as though the release date listed in the newsletter is still unconfirmed, unfortunately. Sorry, folks -- and thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I'm hoping the release will be worldwide, but knowing Sony, we Europeans will have to wait a month or six for it to come out here.

You're joking right? The game is developed BY Europeans. It's simultaneous worldwide release. Perhaps one day earlier on 360 since XBLA games are released on Wednesdays and PSN games are out on Thursdays.

your kidding? LittleBigPlanet and Killzone 2 were both developed by Europeans and Both were released in the US first

I can't think of a single PSN game Sony has released worldwide at the same time. Hell, we've yet to get Tekken 2 as a PSone Classic after it was released in Japan and America TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO. It's so bad, it can't be typed without capitals.

Most foreign stuff (U.S & European games) get delayed in Japan,
but with BF1943, its coming out on July 9th here too.
So you might get it on July 9th too.

Well, regardless, this game is worldwide simulrelease. At worst with a 3-day span.

It's okay that you don't know since you don't keep up with all the BF1943 info... but it is. Stop worrying.

Crap. nevermind that last comment. forgot about the digital-only aspect for a second. This means it will be same day, with one in between 360 and PS3 due to release schedule pattern (Wednesday vs Thursday). If you people want to make yourself worry unnecessarily, by all means feel free to do so. Just know you don't have to.

@Billop: Are you kidding? I dont know about LittleBigPlanet, but Killzone 2 was released the 25th in Europe, and 27th in US and UK!

Where did you hear it will be a worldwide release? Is there a press release for it?

Updated. Sorry! You can understand how we might be confused after EA's Official Newsletter has information regarding a release date and it's not listed as incorrect anywhere on a whole mess of Google searches. Anyway, the piece has been updated with appropriate information, though I'd still bet the game hits right near that date. :P

GordonVanDyke directly commented toward the EA newsletter there, saying it was incorrect. The post you linked to on the EA UK forums wasn't a direct response to the newsletter...

Yeah, Space Fox's link is more accurate and clears up more details.

I'm not a PC guy, but this doesn't seem fair to their fans.

MrKlorox, are you sure that they won't just port the 360/PS3 version to the PC or make a version more optimized for the PC?

Just play 1942, it's basically the same game, with worse vehicle controls.

As an actual videogamer who thinks platform fanboyism is for absolute douches, the information was confirmed to be "unofficial" and potentially inaccurate. Just cause it doesn't list the PC game, doesn't mean it was canceled. And even if it wasn't, it would be released around the same time Bad Company 2 drops (for PC and consoles)... which is weird to release a competing product to the one you had JUST released. And as a BF fanatic, that just seems like it would split the userbase further.

This is a console gamer wondering how many WW I games you've played to get sick if them, because there ain't that many of them out there.

the only WWI game i can remember is in The Darkness when you went to hell, which was WWI, only like, the guys had no faces and some were stiched together. And....other stuff

I wouldn't, nor would I ever want to, be able to distinguish a WWI or WWII game. My point is: I'm tired of games themed on historical wars.

I'm pretty sure there's still going to be a PC version. It's probably not on the page anymore because it isn't due to release until this Fall.

See what happens when you pirate PC games you darn pirates? Developers and publishers may just stop bothering with games on the PC altogether, delay the PC version, or other nasty things.
