Fight Night Round 4 might get button mapping via DLC
Okay, we're going to have to step very lightly here to avoid inciting a full-on boycott/panic/riot. A subtle piece of information slipped under the radar during a mid-June IGN interview with Fight Night Round 4's producers. The tidbit came in response to a query which asked whether the game would allow face button punching controls (it doesn't) -- a query which producer Brian Hayes answered with, "there is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC."
Now, we're somewhat confused as to why the button-mapping options featured in previous Fight Night titles aren't already present in the most recent iteration of the sweetly scientific sim -- not everyone appreciates the stick-based punching control scheme. More importantly, if the folks at EA Sports are thinking about charging for this option -- and we're not saying they definitely are -- then they are high on pot.
We've contacted EA Sports to find out what the deal is.

high on pot indeed
PR0F3TA @ Jun 28th 2009 9:08PM
i'm high on pot... but the city just calls it Buddha.
MrKlorox @ Jun 28th 2009 9:36PM
That's stupid. Isn't the point of slang to shorten the word into an easier form, not elongate it and add syllables?
Reader @ Jun 29th 2009 1:19AM
There's a point to slang? I think slang normally is just defined as non-standard vocabulary.
__smooth__ @ Jun 29th 2009 3:04AM
Even if they are, they got s**t weed in the US. Not that there aren't any good ones, just in general.
Reader @ Jun 29th 2009 7:53PM
Come to the West Coast.
Tyler @ Jun 28th 2009 8:09PM
The stiq is better anyways. It gives it it's own feel and it's not hard to do. I would hate for that game to feel like SF or something.
JS Beckerist @ Jun 28th 2009 9:20PM
My issue is you can't change the directional anymore. I prefer using up and down to move toward and away from your opponent (as in Setup 6 on FNR3) Can't do it anymore, and I am having trouble getting used to the original (Setup 1 on FNR3)
Filter @ Jun 28th 2009 10:00PM
I HATE using TPC, imo its a POS. And anyone who thinks ppl who use the face buttons are 'button mashers', think again. At least when you use the buttons you KNOW what punch you are going to throw. With this messed up system, you know which side you are going to throw but your punch is almost completely random, and thowing any sort of combination is completely f'd up.
Ima play my freashly torrented copy with a few friends, no plans on buying this until its patched.
roderick @ Jun 28th 2009 11:19PM
I personally love the FN series and i thought FNR3 was absoultey amazing. it was really the forst ps3 game to show how good the graphics can really be. When they announced FNR4 i preordered it right away but then i heard that you can only fight with the analog stick, i went and got my money back. I loved the fact in the previous FN games that u could fight with the face buttons, and when this feature wasnt included in the FNR4 i was disguested. Now that they're talking about charging for it, i think EA just lost a long time FN fan and im sure im not the only one
Darius @ Jun 28th 2009 11:19PM
@Filter-
I've never had a problem using TPC. I really like it compared to the button mappings. If you deal with the learning curve (it isn't huge) you can really set up some sweet combinations and feel like you're controlling them as opposed to hitting A,B,X etc.
Cheers,
Darius

I agree with JS Beckerist. I hate not being able to change the directional control. I was used to pushing up to go forward and back to go back. It should be just like the punch control: Left for a left punch on the right stick, and Left to move left on the left stick. Not left to move backwards!!!
Obi-Habby @ Jun 28th 2009 8:14PM
the sticks are amazing on this game. If they did add face button controls I would hope it is done with a patch, or comes with a crap-load of content on that DLC not just buttons.
Jgunznp @ Jun 28th 2009 8:16PM
I hope they don't charge for a feature that is most likely already on the disc. EA don't do it.
Peter @ Jun 28th 2009 8:15PM
DLC is a fantastic feature... It's just too bad developers won't use it right. I think it was Skate 2 that had some DLC that made you unlock everything in the game, and that is a good example on how to abuse this feature.
ryanpaulmcgowan @ Jun 28th 2009 8:27PM
Skate 2 also had proper DLC which was a new place to skate.
All EA products have that sort of crap.
I do agree though.
Obi-Habby @ Jun 28th 2009 8:41PM
Need For Speed Carbon had the Pay 800 Points to unlock everything in the game too. EA again.
MrKlorox @ Jun 28th 2009 9:48PM
Goes to show the difference in approach when your company is publicly owned. The worse Bethesda/ZeniMax had was horse armor. They seemed to learn their lesson quickly after that.
Young_Nastyman @ Jun 29th 2009 10:22AM
I don't see why everyone bitches about DLC to unlock everything.
If someone is that stupid to pay for something but are too lazy or suck too much and don't want to improve and PLAY the GAME hey already paid $60 for. By all means, go for it EA, rape the dumbasses. As long as they don't FORCE us to pay for something already on the disc *cough*CapcomResidentEvil5*cough* I'm fine with it
jordan @ Jun 29th 2009 5:46AM
i dont understand why people dont like the sticks?? the demo was fantastic cant wait to play full game tomorow!!
sony boy @ Jun 28th 2009 8:19PM
joystiq, your so silly. they are just probably going to add a new options and characters in the dlc and have a patch in the dlc.
The Baron @ Jun 28th 2009 8:28PM
Man, weed wouldn't turn them into greedy morons. That's what cocaine's for!
Kazuo Mishima @ Jun 28th 2009 8:45PM
Agreed.
Leroy_Octopus @ Jun 28th 2009 8:29PM
Game Journalist: Does your new game have a pause feature?
EA: There is no pause feature in the final release, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC.
MrKlorox @ Jun 28th 2009 9:32PM
Too bad you're probably too young to remember the first, pauseless, Mortal Kombat.
Peter @ Jun 28th 2009 9:58PM
@MrKlorox "Too bad you're probably too young to remember the first, pauseless, Mortal Kombat." Not everyone played Mortal Kombat, let alone liked it well enough to even figure out that there was no pause system. (You don't pause that often in a fighting game, and if you don't like the game you won't keep playing it) So I didn't see any point why you had to bring up this guys age even though you have no idea who he is.
Leroy_Octopus @ Jun 28th 2009 10:15PM
Actually MrKlorox, I'm 20 yrs old and remember Mortal Kombat very well thank you. You obviously just don't get the joke and are lashing out in anger.
MrKlorox @ Jun 29th 2009 4:47AM
Of course, how silly of me. I didn't mean "too young to remember"... I mean anybody can emulate the game now. By that sense, I remember the Civil War via history class.
What I meant was "too young to remember when it came out." Excuse my absurd mistake.
But in the end you're right. I was just lashing out in anger. Ignorance makes me angry.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 28th 2009 8:34PM
Oh FFS, i hope not, People just cant handle analogue, ITS THE WAY ITS SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED! Downvote me if u want i dont care but if u can only knock people out online Using the buttons (who freakin cant) then your just not good!, i used to play my 7year old nephew on FN3 and the buttons were to easier use for HIM maybe.
Leroy_Octopus @ Jun 28th 2009 8:41PM
I'm downvoting you, because I can't understand half of what you're saying.
MrKlorox @ Jun 28th 2009 9:31PM
I understood perfectly and his points are valid. Button mashing is more responsive than stick twiggling. Too bad there aren't enough face buttons to match the number of inputs/gestures you can get from an analog stick. If there was, it would have been in the initial launch. Now watch them gimp it.
devilsei @ Jun 28th 2009 9:31PM
Yeah same here.
I played the game, and while its alright, the analog stick doesn't register half of what I do, so it just becomes a jab after a jab for me, which started annoying me when I'm trying to do a few punches quickly.
And I've watched my friend just mash one direction on the stick and win fights, it isn't going to be that bad to add in a button.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jun 28th 2009 9:49PM
U guys are just shit and cant handle stick, thats why ure whining and complaining go play UFC
MrKlorox @ Jun 28th 2009 9:50PM
If you can't get the stick to do what you want, you're not doing it right. It's that simple. As it is, everybody is an a level playing field. With button based punches, that will change. Hopefully they segregate the users online.
Leroy_Octopus @ Jun 28th 2009 10:08PM
jiro, usually when someone says they don't care about being downvoted, they don't bitch about being downvoted. Just sayin'
PedoJokerBear (aka Deeznuts) @ Jun 28th 2009 11:06PM
@ Kill a mans jiro: yeah im pretty sure you can handle a stick.
Reader @ Jun 29th 2009 1:23AM
The DLC would make it an OPTION not a requirement. What the fuck is wrong with an option? Why do you care how people prefer to map their controls? There are a million reasons why someone might want to map their controls (from injuries to personal preference), but it still remains that if it's an option and not a requirement then it doesn't matter if they have a reason or not.
MrKlorox @ Jun 29th 2009 4:40AM
@Reader: Why? Same reason it's not a good idea to let PC players take on console players at the same time. It's all about control response on an even playing field. All will be okay as long as you can choose what type to play online and don't have to worry about button mashers interfering with your progress with their cheap shots.
ocdog45 @ Jun 28th 2009 8:37PM
I read about this on twitter from pastapadre. if they do charge for this, i will gladly say FU to EA.
Ashitaka @ Jun 28th 2009 10:12PM
Nobody cares that you read about this on twitter.
DeathroW @ Jun 28th 2009 8:37PM
== online ruined by button mashers, stick mashers at the moment are terrible online, give 'em a button and that jab becomes 100x quicker and unavoidable.
eNrique @ Jun 28th 2009 8:39PM
Download this premium DLC for only $9.99, avaiable one week after the release of the game.
EA SPORTS - It's In The Game.
Span_Wolf @ Jun 28th 2009 8:46PM
Don't you mean, "It's in the game.. after you buy all our DLC!"?
r.crisp @ Jun 28th 2009 10:13PM
well done captain obvious.
isthatblazerock @ Jun 28th 2009 8:50PM
I have to admit that right now the lack of the option really has me still not purchasing this game. I'm interested in it, but i guess UFC Unleashed button based fighting just has me spoiled.
Jawmuncher @ Jun 28th 2009 9:05PM
Thats the main reason im skipping this right now.
I know the analog control is supposed to be so awesome but I really cant get used to it.
