Okay, we're going to have to step very lightly here to avoid inciting a full-on boycott/panic/riot. A subtle piece of information slipped under the radar during a mid-June IGN interview with Fight Night Round 4's producers. The tidbit came in response to a query which asked whether the game would allow face button punching controls (it doesn't) -- a query which producer Brian Hayes answered with, "there is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC."
Now, we're somewhat confused as to why the button-mapping options featured in previous Fight Night titles aren't already present in the most recent iteration of the sweetly scientific sim -- not everyone appreciates the stick-based punching control scheme. More importantly, if the folks at EA Sports are thinking about charging for this option -- and we're not saying they definitely are -- then they are high on pot.
We've contacted EA Sports to find out what the deal is.

A hook would be understandable, but a straight? That seems to be an issue with you or the controller there.

I seriously hope they don't do this. This game is much faster paced than Round 3 and allowing buttons would make the game extremely unfair for people using the sticks. I dunno what the big deal is. EVERYONE can learn to use the stick. It's not that hard. It just requires patience and PRACTICE. Once you master it down, it feels like the real thing. You actually feel like you are throwing those punches because of the motions. I'd never switch to buttons, even if button mashers kick my butt.

how about they just keep the online seperate, people who want to use buttons / the people who think twirling their thumb in circles makes the game more lifelike

now this gives ppl who whined about the damn controls a reason to buy the game....

I dont agree with that. I myself am a huge fan of Boxing (Friday Night Fights, BAD etc) and made my decision solely on the face buttons. After playing the demo, which looked great, i just wasnt feeling it. If you like the TPC more power to you but why not keep all the original options from all the other FN's? Just satisfy everyone. My argument is that TPC isnt as accurate and fast enough. There is no way you can physically move the analog stick quick enough to throw 2 jabs, a straight right then an uppercut. Combo's would be way to slow. It sucks paying extra, but the day that face buttons are available, I'm buying the game.

You know how to punch to the head? Hit UP on the analog stick...
Not sure why people are bitching about it... It's so much easier than the stupid Resident Evil controls..

I've had people bitch about the skill stick in NHL which is so good I now find it hard to play sports games using the face buttons. It's a new skill set, get used it.

Hey MrsKlorox, if you want to be hip with your control schemes, go play punchout. The first THREE fight nights had the control's correct with both buttons and the stick.

This is why I love Demos.
If the game looks beautiful but the controls suck, I don't buy.

the controls are what bumped it from an immediate purchase to a pick it up cheap. i don't mind learning new ways to play games, i just have a stack of mostly inexpensive games to half ass my way through at the moment.

i didnt really prefer the buttons but it was a good option. i have friends that wont play the game at all because they couldnt use buttons during the demo. stick controls arent easier/harder to use but itd be nice to have a choice..
its just a personal preference. kinda like using a mouse and keyboard for shooters, i prefer controllers for example. i dont care that m/k combo is more precise to others, id rather play any shooter on a console with controller any day..

People use the face buttons to play fight night? But the joystick feels so right, plus it feels more like your in control! The joystick does to boxing what it did to gold in Tiger Woods, made it feel more realistic.

Just like in R3, including button configuring will necesitate an "analog only" matchmaking option online. Otherwise it's offline only for me.

I have no problem with this, and if they do put it in I think you should be able to set an option to not play button mashers or maybe not let them compete in ranks.
I feel like it is two different games when playing with the buttons vs stick.

How nice of EA to give us a traditional control option after the game has already been released.

All you people who are saying stuff like keep the sticks its a sim not street fighter, that's hardly a statement to make considering fight night and street fighter/mortal combat are completely different games, street fighter and games like that are supposed to be fast paced 30 hit combo's an sh*t, i understand the argument in place here that the sticks make for a more realistic experience, but you people have to consider both sides of the argument, some people just don't get along with the sticks, me being one of them, i agree with many people here, they are unresponsive, you want to do an uppercut for instance to the head and it hits the body. Ok i know that isn't always the case, but for combo's, when you have alot of stamina you want to be in control of what punches your throwing, you dont want to be f**king up a combo/strategy you have in place all because EA are to bold to add a simple patch for face button controls. Anyway am not going to ramble on, if EA don't sort this i wont be buying it :)

I'm really confused, I've used the analog stick to fight from FNR2, used it in FNR3 and now in FNR4 its all the same, never used the buttons. And thats why I love FN, its a lot more realistic using the analog over buttons, and a hell of a lot quicker.

Can I get my behind the back camera-view back too? Screw buttons. I can't see.

I tried these controls through the demo, and they seemed okay during the tutorial. Then I tried to use them in a real fight and it all fell apart for me. Trying to remember which motion would do a body blow and the time it takes to do the motion with the stick usually resulted in me getting decked by the opponent, because I couldn't remember which button/stick combo would dodge.
It seems like the kind of thing that if someone spent a lot of time with, they could whip some butt, though. It's just not for me. I like my sports games arcadey, and EA insists on going hyper realistic. I don't need a team of 20 programmers working on sweat physics, I want to punch somebody in the face.
That said, yay for Punch-Out!!

Joystiq, don't be intentionally stupid for the sake of generating buzz and hits. They wouldn't charge for this.

I Personally like the stick based controls and,
I think that they were just confusing DLC with a future game update.
Plus if they r truly high on pot, then I would like some, please.

If they make this DLC a ridiculous charge i'm going to sell this game that same day... this feature should have been included in the game from the beginning.

U know ive read alot of talk about button punchers complaining an being cheaters, when the fact of the matter is,total punch control are the real cheaters and cry babe's.Since the first fight night there was only button mashing thats how we all learned how to play.It was the skilled button pushers who sent your now Total punch controler crying " I cant Play This Way".So EA blesses u with Total Punch Control..Not one button masher complained u play ur way i play mine..An i would always win still do.Now to adress that button mashers are cheaters, how can u say that when not one button we could push that threw a haymaker,or a stun punch..Which by the way has got to be the biggest cheat in the game, since when can u get beat to the point of death every round but muster up a one punch stun that works everytime. If this was realistic wouldnt have Tyson used it when Buster knocked him out..The point is button mashers didnt have any one button to push to throw that punch,we were forced to not use that punch or use Total punch control to throw it,How is that Fair!!!!!!!!This wont be the last time u hear from me....
