Microsoft honoring MJ with free Thriller video download (update)
We're all still reeling from the passing of the King of Pop, but fortunately, Microsoft's got a nice (albeit brief) memorial for Michael Jackson up on Xbox Live. This weekend only, the Video Marketplace is giving away the full, ten-minute version of MJ's classic "Thriller" music video for your viewing pleasure. Yep, the greatest music video of all time is free to download until the end of the day today.
It's a nice gesture -- but why not just make the video permanently free? We're not sure these wounds will heal in such a short period of time.
Update: Looks like they've already take the deal down. If you don't feel like paying two dollars to watch a music video (and you shouldn't), you can just watch it on YouTube for free.

Pretty cool. Too bad my 360 got stolen. Come on PSN!
Nathan-DTS @ Jun 28th 2009 12:17PM
Download Vidzone of the EU store and you can watch all Jackson's songs and watch some Hannah Montana.
MystileArmor @ Jun 28th 2009 12:58PM
-1 for even mentioning Hannah Montana.
Nathan-DTS @ Jun 28th 2009 2:06PM
How did you not realise that was a joke.
MystileArmor @ Jun 28th 2009 2:34PM
Regardless,... you brought her up. You shouldn't. Just reading the name of that squirbil (Squirrel and a gerbil hybrid) brings out crazy apeshit-rage in me.
Peter Moore @ Jun 28th 2009 11:36AM
'Cause this is thriller, thriller night.
And no one's gonna save you from the beast about strike...
Rhamsey @ Jun 28th 2009 11:36AM
Fucking Awesome, who doesnt love thriller.
Chicago Mafia @ Jun 28th 2009 11:47AM
Thanks! In my queue.
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Jun 28th 2009 12:56PM
Everybody loves you when you're dead. Even Microsoft.
Alex @ Jun 28th 2009 5:54PM
Is it wrong that I have _never_ seen this music video?
VyX @ Jun 28th 2009 11:39AM
I can't find the video in the marketplace... is this US only?
Rhamsey @ Jun 28th 2009 11:45AM
It might be, try using this link

"Sorry, this page is unavailable"
Free but we cant even download it. Wow.
ssuk @ Jun 28th 2009 11:50AM
Yep. I can't download it with my US locale XBL account either. I could try and proxy it, but that's far too much trouble and may not even work then. Fuck you Microsoft and your ass-backwards approach to any non-US marketplace.
FNG @ Jun 28th 2009 12:00PM
I don't know if it will matter, but try this link. It worked for me. (in US)

Markez @ Jun 28th 2009 5:52PM
It's not free on the marketplace, it's 160 points. What the dilly?
Autopsy15 @ Jun 28th 2009 7:03PM
Yeah looks like MS is cheaping out on us a day early. Says 160 on the website and on the 360 marketplace.
mikecjenkins @ Jun 28th 2009 11:40AM
I think reeling is a bit strong. NAMBLA may be reeling, I'm just fine.
WREturns @ Jun 28th 2009 12:14PM
See, mikecjenkins? You don't even know that you're reeling!
Obie @ Jun 28th 2009 11:41AM
The video is region locked. I guess free, does not mean DRM free. :(
YO-Q @ Jun 28th 2009 11:42AM
No love for Canada.. said not available in my region
Mazrael @ Jun 28th 2009 5:27PM
What about non-Americans?
(What about us?)
Cj @ Jun 28th 2009 11:43AM
To bad its not available on the marketplace.
Nick Mosedale @ Jun 28th 2009 12:19PM
Too bad.... hehe
MystileArmor @ Jun 28th 2009 1:00PM
Because I'm bad, I'm bad, you know it, I'm bad.
Cj @ Jun 28th 2009 11:44AM
It was all allegations. He was a weird man, but there is no proof he did rape them. Thats why he was found innocent in court.
Christ-ian @ Jun 28th 2009 11:45AM
Douchebag.
Rob Bourne @ Jun 28th 2009 11:49AM
Locked to US - can't even download it through my US account.
Thanks for leaving everyone else out again, MS.
Obie @ Jun 28th 2009 12:47PM
Same here, I have a US account, paid for by a US Visa card. I will never get this region lock shit, pirate away I say! Yarrr!
Sean @ Jun 28th 2009 8:29PM
Yeah, blame MS for the bullshit region laws in the US.
Best thing about watching Top Gear last week? The FIRST song they played was from Star Trek. How much did they pay for that? NOTHING.
Rob Bourne @ Jun 29th 2009 2:11AM
Region laws? Don't know how those apply since the video is still available on the UK marketplace but costs 200 MS points.
Never mind though, it seems it's no longer free in the US now.
Peter Moore @ Jun 28th 2009 11:49AM
You don't fuck with the guy who made Thriller.
Vcize @ Jun 28th 2009 11:51AM
Uh, he was not found innocent in court.
Van Faulk @ Jun 28th 2009 11:52AM
@CJ
Right, and OJ was innocent too. That's why he was found innocent in court. Reality check: people with crap loads of money can get around the legal system if they really want to.
Dude paid hush money to the family of one of the kids he molested. You don't do that if you are innocent.
Cj @ Jun 28th 2009 11:52AM
Not sure what it was called but he wasnt prosecuted. No evidence.
Joe @ Jun 28th 2009 11:53AM
Really guys? Can we just ignore that for a minute and pay respects to a deceased man?
Anyway, this is a surprisingly classy move on MS's part, as Thriller is their top-selling music video of all time. And it works for me through my US account, too. Scroll down and hit Download in SD.
Kazuo Mishima @ Jun 28th 2009 2:15PM
I agree, man. I feel sorry for those that don't live in the United States and can't enjoy what MS has done but you can't help but appreciate the gesture.
whylekat @ Jun 28th 2009 3:08PM
Doesnt work for me and i'm in ny. Says some dumb status code 8000404 and when I try it thru xbox.com it says not available in your region. WTF? Is it west coast only or something??
catfish24 @ Jun 28th 2009 5:14PM
I agree. R.I.P. Ed McMahon, Michael Jackson, and Farah Fawcett.
No matter what a person is accused of during his/her life, it still hurts the same to the family and friends of said person. The families of these people are grieving and it seems like some of you people don't understand the grief because you've never experienced it.
Markusdragon @ Jun 28th 2009 11:54AM
A man who was ACCUSED of having sex with children. In civil suits. For money. By people with a background of attempted extortion.
Exu @ Jun 28th 2009 11:55AM
Thriller is on the UK marketplace but for some reason it's still 200MSP, as with the other Jacko vids.
Aren't these same videos 160 in the US? Still, largely irrelevant as paying for music videos is daft.
MrKlorox @ Jun 28th 2009 4:35PM
Agreed. I might be able to fathom paying up to 200 MSP for an HD version of a 10 minute video like this... but most videos aren't even shot in HD for some retarded reason... plus they're usually only 4 minutes long.
Either way, if I'm going to pay for an SD music video, it'll be in DVD format and include more than one video.
Reuben @ Jun 28th 2009 11:57AM
Actually, Vcize, he was found innocent. He was Acquitted of all charges brought against him in the trial of 2006.. You think you could have researched that first, yeah?
Cj @ Jun 28th 2009 11:58AM
Its sort of working on the US marketplace.I think MS is just having technical issues with it. Im downloading now.
Jason Statham (Aka Vegeta) @ Jun 28th 2009 12:00PM
Meh. Thriller is nice, but I would have prefered it if it was Smooth Criminal. Now that's a badass Michael Jackson music video.
Reuben @ Jun 28th 2009 12:03PM
This is ridiculous. No one knows if he did it, and I certainly can't prove that he didn't. Either way, he passed away last week, so I think it would be best if we could leave our accusations at the door and pay some respect.
Or at least make jokes about his game, Moonwalker. That's good stuff.
PCIV @ Jun 28th 2009 12:03PM
And if he went to heaven, I'll chat with him, k?
WREturns @ Jun 28th 2009 12:04PM
You know what nobody seems to consider? Say he did rape some kids and he was able to hush their parents with money. Shouldn't we be worried that these parents are pimping out their kids, for all intents and purposes? So in that scenario, who's the bigger monster?
WPstart @ Jun 28th 2009 12:12PM
Microsoft must think only the US liked Michael Jackson... :S
matt247 @ Jun 28th 2009 12:13PM
If it was free for life, he's family wouldn't recieve money for it
