Konami registers 'Genso Suikoden' in US
Late last week, Konami registered the title Genso Suikoden with the United States Patent and Trademark office. While no further details are available, the filing may be one of many different possibilities: a new game in the series (known simply as Suikoden in North America), a remake of the original Suikoden or a US release of the poor-selling Japan-only PSP compilation, which included slightly enhanced versions of Suikoden I & II.
The nearly 15 year old series has been getting quite a push from Konami in recent months. In late 2008, Konami released the original PlayStation version of Suikoden on the PlayStation Network, while the Nintendo DS received the latest game in the series -- Suikoden Tierkreis -- in March.

I saw a plate of food before my eyes adjusted to see it was anime like characters. I need to take a nap 0_o

Was Suikoden DS any good? I'm considering buying it.
Xav de Matos @ Jun 29th 2009 6:56PM
Yes, it is actually.
Leroy_Octopus @ Jun 29th 2009 7:08PM
Thanks, Xav. I'll have to pick it up.

Nrrrgh....if you're into the Suikoden series, it's terrible. But if you're new to the series it probably won't seem all that bad. Me, I didn't enjoy it. It moves away from the series' normal focus on regional conflicts and fantasy politics, and took away the rune system just about entirely. Basically, it felt like Suikoden had been taken and made generic.

I wanted to pick up 1 and 2 after hearing about the series on Retronauts, but they are hard to find and spendy.
Check out #67 if you want to learn more about Suikoden.

just get II.
Get II and never look back (or forward to III and beyond)

I just recently started playing the first one again. A remake isn't necessary, but would be welcomed if done right.

C'mooon PSP-make! *Throws dice*

Tierkreis bombed at retail, or so VGChartz claims (40,000 US, though they're strangely missing JP numbers), so we'll see about where they're going with the series

Still trying to work out just how many glasses of laced Kool-Aid one must drink in order to see Suikoden as anything above mediocre.
mortegro545 @ Jun 29th 2009 8:37PM
This is a great series. Anything new they do with it would be very welcome if done to the same caliber of the earlier games.

I bought my PS2 for Suikoden 3. Suikoden 2 is still my favorite game and I replay it frequently (always after 1, because I think it's a great prequel and I like to see what I can change in 1 that will affect 2).
I am completely ready for whatever Konami is doing here. If they released the PSP compilation, I would buy a PSP. I was actually looking for them to release the game before I bought the PSP (my discs are getting old and worn :( ) and I had lost hope that it would ever happen... if that is what they're thinking of doing, I'm going to have to push back the DS buy to get a PSP.
garnsr @ Jun 29th 2009 11:45PM
I bought my PS2 for 3 too. I've enjoyed all of them from the first one, more or less, but haven't gotten Tierkris yet. I should go see how much it is these days.

My game of the series is II. I bought III but it didn't have the favor of the second. The Luca Blight Boss battle will go down in history as the RPG boss battle. A guy so bad ass you have to fight him with 3 sets of party members (which is about 6 ppl each) then have to do a duel battle to finish him off is incredible. I'm hoping for a PSN release of II so I don't have to play my disc copy anymore.
Olicon @ Jun 30th 2009 2:13AM
Suikoden is NOT for the light-hearted. This game is heavy in both its difficulty, depth, and story. This is the only game I truly consider as a 'tragedy'. And boy, is every single minutes of all of them so delicious.

Suikoden is a good series, with some amazing highs and mediocre lows.
Its too bad that the creator left and we got the lackluster follow ups after 3 that just tried to regress back to the PS1 games.
For all the silly fanboy love 5 gets, it was a poorly made game and its awful sales seriously hurt the series.
For all the silly fanboy hate 3 gets, it was a brilliant game that brought the series greater sales and critical acclaim than it ever received before or since.
Also, the games were particularly noteworthy because they were so incredibly easy and put story before level grinding, which is something that sets it apart from so many other JRPGs.
You could walk right through Suikoden 1-3 without ever grinding at all.
Azariel_z @ Jun 30th 2009 3:28AM
Suikoden Tierkreis has an undub version around the net... for the few voice lines is good enough & changes the mood of the game, as it did with FF IV.
Undub FTW..
Kyera @ Jun 30th 2009 9:34AM
Ugh, I just bought the first one over PSN, but if we're getting the PSP remake it's a day one purchase.
Suikoden II is, hands down, my favourite RPG, and I regret giving my friend's copy back to him many years ago. ;)
Storm Eagle @ Jun 30th 2009 9:36AM
Oh no...not more Suikoden.
Muhammad Sabeeh Ali @ Jun 30th 2009 12:33PM
More Suikoden would be awesome. I would buy it for Suikoden 2 alone (I already have suikoden 1 from PSN).
I have heard that this is a PS3/360 game and not the Suikoden 1 and 2 repackage. Suikoden 6 will be a day 1 purchase for me.
Muhammad Sabeeh Ali @ Jun 30th 2009 12:34PM
@druff,
Have you played Suikoden 1 and 2 or 3 ?
