Listen up,
QuakeCon attendees:
id Software's LANtastic event is changing venues to the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, the location of the show in 2004 and 2005. The people most affected by this change are folks who made reservations at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. Those who made reservations through the QuakeCon website have had their room "automatically canceled." Reservations at the Gaylord Texan will be at an equal or lesser rate, and reservations will begin "very shortly."
The dates for QuakeCon have not changed. The event will be held August 13-16 and is still a free event open to the public; however, if you plan on bringing your own computer, you'll have to
register ASAP.

That place is absolutely ridiculous.
Shagittarius @ Jun 29th 2009 6:52PM
Only 2 things come from Texas.
DrunkMiffy @ Jun 29th 2009 6:57PM
Hmm.. Inbreds and rednecks? Generally the two are one :| Haha..
Ahh, here comes the flame!
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jun 29th 2009 6:59PM
Gaylord texans and Texan gaylords?
Wiizer @ Jun 29th 2009 6:59PM

DIE IN A HAIL OF YOSEMITE SAM BULLETS!!!
mac_411 @ Jun 29th 2009 7:42PM
Steers and queers.
Old Professor Zertoss @ Jun 29th 2009 8:13PM
It's true, everyone in Texas is gay. The only reason we still have a population is because the rest of the states keep sending their gays here.
Why do you the rest of you gotta hate?
Anthology @ Jun 29th 2009 9:52PM
Are those two things oil and toast?
Judd @ Jun 29th 2009 10:14PM
It's funny as soon as I read this story I was thinking of Full Metal Jacket too. Was thinking of making such a post, but somebody already did that.
I guess it makes sense that other states would send gays to Texas, Old Professor Zertoss, being that it's such a progressive state and all.
Mr.Happy @ Jun 29th 2009 7:07PM
I live in Texas. >:(
Tonio @ Jun 29th 2009 7:07PM
Man, in the USVI, there was a guy named Gaylord Francis running for senate.
Needless to say, he was not elected.
Wiizer @ Jun 29th 2009 7:48PM
If people are electing officials based on their first and last names in the Virgin Islands, we have bigger issues than this blog post.
eldee @ Jun 29th 2009 7:29PM
I will still be in canada :|
fuuuuck...
Zach @ Jun 29th 2009 7:45PM
Sadly, not only will I be canceling my reservation, but I'll be skipping QC this year since it'll be at the Gaylord. That place is an inconvenient and way overpriced venue for QC.
Old Professor Zertoss @ Jun 29th 2009 8:12PM
I've been there. It's like they built a hotel around a shopping district. We wandered around looking for things to do that didn't involve drinking, because some of us didn't drink and the rest of us didn't drink overpriced piss water.
It was funny how the highlight of that trip was leaving. Seriously, that was a big bullet point on the expo's flyer. Fuck that place, it's a cancerous cell on Texas.
Gradoman @ Jun 29th 2009 8:30PM
Boy, you really don't know, huh..?
Listen to reggae and you'll understand the mindset of many people in the Caribbean.
Gradoman @ Jun 29th 2009 8:31PM
Aw crap, I was replying to Wiizer.
Ubiqutous Oxymoron @ Jun 29th 2009 8:56PM
I went to the Gaylord in 2005 to the quakecon to treat myself after i graduated from my masters degree, (distinction) I actually took a train from New York to LA, went to siggraph, then went to marina del rey for some jet skiing in the pacific, flew down to texas and fragged for a week and got incredibly drunk then on the way back to blighty i had a flight change in Charleston South Carolina and on the way there we flew over Katrina.
was in the US for about a month and I had a great time, something i will never forget flying over that storm. i remember i spent about $5000 :P
Gaylord is a great resort, faux cowboys shooting each other in the complex, spent $150 on a steak in a posh restaurant and got fdrunk on gin and tonics, got laid by this sweet Texan chic called Rachael (a.k.a jewel babe was her frag handle).
got stopped by the D.E.A in Chicago which was a strange experience, had a chilli dog in Alberquerque, I had my lapto with me and i remeber playing Nexus - the jupiter incident on the train at night when i was getting hammered in the on board bar.
would reccomend it highly.
Matt the Catt @ Jun 29th 2009 9:23PM
That was THE MOST AMAZING story ever.
AoF-Squall @ Jun 29th 2009 11:31PM
I haven't seen the Quakecon forums since this was announced, but I'm sure you'll see an enormous outcry. Everyone hated the Gaylord. The hotel for the past couple years was substantially better (although going anywhere but the lan was inconvenient).
Oh well. I'll still be there, Quakecon rocks!
zitt @ Jun 30th 2009 1:01AM
Did you know most if not all of the 1v1 winners from last year (the ones that won $1k) have yet to be paid?
Did you know that other prize winners haven't been paid in past years?
Seems like a cheap move for a "the ultimate video game festival, party"; huh?
So - what's the deal here... it's news worthy that QC'09 moved to a different hotel... but not newsworthy that they stiff people and use the promitional materials without paying for it?
Rob Bourne @ Jun 30th 2009 4:24AM
The event means nothing to me, but if the Gaylord Texan is the same hotel company as Gaylord Palsm in Kissimmee, FL, then ouch. I feel for the guys needing to shack up there. It ain't cheap.
Caenicus @ Jun 30th 2009 9:13AM
Woohoo! Goodbye, Hilton!

The rednecks secretly love the Gays.
