Why can no company other than Nintendo understand what makes a platformer good? Is there really some hidden secret?

Agreed. This just looks like one of those generic mascot games we got sick of in the 90's.

See Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper. All excellent platformers in their own right.

Actually, I didn't think Psychonauts was a particularly good platformer, but that wasn't really the appeal of the game.

I said generic mascot's like Gex. Not good ones like you listed. Seriously, look at the kid in these photos. Do you want to play as him, or pants him in the schoolyard. If you were responding to Nimblewick, calm down he just generalizing.

I think in our haste to name platformers we momentarily forgot about "Yo Noid!"

Firstly: I think Psychonauts only real problem was too much item collection.
Secondly: Gex wasn't bad so much as generic. It was also the first thing that jump in my head.
chisipto (or however you spell your name)
I would play anything if it's fun, but will you actually care about that character?

"Sonic was good,Crash was good,Rayman was good."

Key word being "was." (Though I was never a fan of Crash, I know a lot of other people liked him.) It seems they are having a hard time recapturing that goodness lately, especially Sonic.

"Banjo,Donkey Kong,Monkey Ball, Billy the Hatcher, Tony Hawk ( arguable),Mirrors Edge ( arguable) etc.."

Banjo and Donkey Kong were made under supervision by Nintendo copying Nintendo play mechanics. Monkey Ball isn't a platformer. Bill the Hatcher wasn't good. And those last two are more than arguable.

"Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper."

I hear these are good, but haven't played them. Do they put more emphasis on the actual platforming or on the defeat of enemies using guns?

Poor RK, they, like many developers for DS and Wii, have such a bitch of a time trying to crack their codes for success.

The game still does look slightly impressive from a graphical standpoint. Makes you wonder if Nintendo could've done a DS port of Mario Sunshine. Sure it would look anything but pretty, though it may have been more appreciated on the DS than on the GC given the extra ease the touch screen controls would've offered. RK, I think, is out to prove some sort of point with developing games for the DS. Their efforts reminds me of HVS'.

Mario Sunshine needs to be contained and quickly forgotten. The more quickly, the better. I wouldn't be opposed to a Mario Galaxy DS iteration, however. Something like Mario Galaxy: Distant Star, for instance. Yes, that'd do nicely...

Indeed. That could greatly show off the DSi's power. I'm assuming you own a copy of Mario Kart DS. Remember how impressive it looked and played? It felt console worthy and not like a handheld game at all. The art style was so tied into Mario Kart DD that it looked great on the DS. Now, much like Nintendo revamped Mario 64 on the DS, a Mario Galaxy title on the DS would be excellent. The awesomeness of Mario Galaxy on the go. Sure it would be far from gorgeous as the Wii version, but if it manages to look absolutely amazing on the DS, that'll be a plus.

Mario Sunshine was an awesome game. I played it for well over 100 hours before I got bored. I stopped playing Galaxy after my first playthrough.

Looks like Commander Keen.

We need a new Commander Keen game... it had a Calvin and Hobbes style feel to it that made me remember long summer school vacations...
