Sony expands 'Official Licensing Program' for PlayStation peripherals, accessories
Sony Computer Entertainment is expanding its licensing program for PlayStation peripherals and accessories. It basically means that if a peripheral manufacturer conforms to "qualifying SCE standard and requirements," it can make gadgets and gizmos aplenty, whosits and whatsits galore! You want thingamabobs? They'll make plenty! But, who cares? No big deal. We want mooooooooooore.
Entering into a licensing agreement with SCE will give manufacturers the "technical documentations" needed to make products for PSP, PS3 and the PS2. Plus, when the product goes to market, it'll even get the spiffy "Official Licensed Product logo." We can't wait to see what third-party manufacturers come up with over the next few months.

Mm, Sony's looking for a new way to make profit it seems. On the other hand, I don't know how profitable this would be.
Accessories are typically a high margin, high profit area, which I'd imagine is why Nintendo and Sega never became big with it despite being in the game for a very long time (hell, Nintendo used to go to long court wars with some of them - GameGenie, for one).
Sony is probably betting that licensing it to others might be profitable, yet not eat into their own accessory market (because consumers are too used to preferring first party accessories).
Plankfan @ Jun 30th 2009 9:26AM
So, can we get a Sony licensed cake frosting???
cheviot @ Jun 30th 2009 9:27AM
+1 for the Little Mermaid reference
Storm Eagle @ Jun 30th 2009 10:03AM
Wow. I thought I was the only one who picked up on that. So +1 to you sir.
davidmerten @ Jun 30th 2009 11:03AM
Yeah, it took me a second to get it as well. Sounded vaguely familiar at first...
Robert @ Jun 30th 2009 12:24PM
haha that's funny
bruce @ Jun 30th 2009 9:37AM
an officially backed ps3 media server (maybe even ps3mediaserver) should be the FIRST application of this! (hopefully they'll duplicate netflix/360 workaround without wasting 40bucks on half-assed playon server). followed by psp cam, playtv, etc
Damn! ron jeremy as mario........damn! lol
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 10:04AM
maybe I missed it somewhere but I didnt see anything about apps. Just Peripherals and accessories, not a single word about software
Tim Parsons @ Jun 30th 2009 11:38AM
,.. i'm pretty sure like Chris said this is for hardware, 3rd party controllers n stuff.
Why do we need an offical Sony Media Server? Personally I think Window Media Player is the best to use. It's bad enough Sony is wasting time on the pile of crap called "Home" the only software they should be concerned with it is GAMES
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 12:41PM
Windows media player works good enough for you???? Really?? it doesnt even encode half of the best codecs....I use TVersity..
Shiaoran @ Jun 30th 2009 9:45AM
Awesome.
We already know that there are people ho can make stuff better than Sony, like Katana, but they were already licensed... So... Not news? :P
Joe P @ Jun 30th 2009 9:49AM
lol @ Little Mermaid reference. That made my morning.
Spartan @ Jun 30th 2009 9:50AM
A control pad where the left analogue stick is in the 'correct' place?
Hxczuner (PSN i.d) @ Jun 30th 2009 9:56AM
And what, pray tell, would be the correct place?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 10:02AM
Pay no attention to the troll...lol
that stick has been in the same place for over 10 years....if it weren't comfortable for the masses dont you think they would have moved it by now??
Paul @ Jun 30th 2009 10:27AM
forget the correct analog sticks I'll settle for anything a little bit bigger. The PS controller was great when I was 15, but my hands cramp up when using that little controller anymore
Christian @ Jun 30th 2009 10:35AM
Actually it surprise me that 3rd party controller makers doesn't offer pads almost identical to the major competitors pad. I am sure there is a market for a Xbox-pad for PS3 and a playstation pad for the Xbox360.
Str84rumBk (PSN) @ Jun 30th 2009 10:50AM
look you fucking troll if you hate the DS3 then this will be another choice of controller
http://bit.ly/wE4oq
**the only thing is it has no sixaxis. i want everyone to know i love my DS3. i would trade anything for it.**
also if you hate the L2 & R2 buttons as much as me theres somethinh to also help our problem!

Tim Parsons @ Jun 30th 2009 11:41AM
Troll!
I hate the position of Xbox stick/control pad it's so retarded.
Str84rumBk (PSN) @ Jun 30th 2009 11:46AM
@Tim Parsons
+1 on hating position on the 360 controller lolsz
Spartan @ Jun 30th 2009 12:13PM
screw you guys.
Im not a troll.
that wasn't a flame. I simply thing the d-pad is where the stick should be.
It s a personal opinion. But woe be on to he who hath an opinion different to yours, isn't it?
p.s. 360 control pad > all
(d-pad excluding)
Michelobius @ Jun 30th 2009 12:36PM
I hate this argument.
Ok, it's not an 'opinion' if it's stated as fact, as, for example, using the term "correct" to de-legitimize any alternative to the 360 controller. Figure it out. You make brash overarching statements that sound a lot like a troll, you're getting tagged as one.
TTownEP @ Jun 30th 2009 9:53AM
As long as I can get my dingle-hoppers, I approve.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 10:00AM
smh....More crap. I still remember those crappy ass PS2 Madcatz controllers, damn things were only good for like 2-3 months then the sticks were done. After that I came to the conclusion that I would NEVER buy 3rd party controllers ever again. and looking at that Nyko PS3 controller I further stand by NOT wanting 3rd party controllers on the PS3 as they would use a valuable USB port for the damn dongle
needmoregigs @ Jun 30th 2009 4:51PM
Its unfortunate for you Chris, but not all 3rd party manufacturers suck. The last 3rd party controller I owned was the Logitech cordless controller for the xbox. It was one of the best controllers I had to the pleasure to own. It was very comfortable, had perfect weight for me, and precise. I destroyed many hours of my life on halo 1 and 2 with that controller.

I am hoping for an officially licensed Logitech version for the ps3 that properly implements the home button and bt since the current one lacks it due to licensing issues.
needmoregigs @ Jun 30th 2009 4:57PM
The following is the current offering from logitech. It looks very comfortable and should ease some of the complaints about the feel of the ds3.

Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 5:21PM
yea logitech is the best of 3rd party controllers but madcatz DOES suck ass....
needmoregigs @ Jun 30th 2009 6:29PM
Right on. No argument from me.
Hedgeson @ Jun 30th 2009 10:57PM
I loved our Logitech Precision Wireless gamepad for PS2.
Is this PS3 version Bluetooth or is it another annoying USB dongle controller?
Hedgeson @ Jun 30th 2009 10:59PM
Ohhh... no it's usb.
But WAIT! This licensing program could mean licensed, 3rd party BLUETOOTH controllers... Finally!
spirit1969 @ Jun 30th 2009 10:04AM
Thanks for putting that song in my head. I had a roomie who watched it at least once a day for almost a month straight.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Jun 30th 2009 10:24AM
Your roomie is a cool dude.
DrXym @ Jun 30th 2009 10:22AM
If this means the end of devices with stupid dongles or missing functionality then hooray.
j.howlett @ Jun 30th 2009 10:25AM
maybe more bluetooth enabled devices, and likely plastic things for pseye games
Lekko @ Jun 30th 2009 10:41AM
They're just gearing up for the mass of giant foam objects to clip onto the motion wands.
ryanlward @ Jun 30th 2009 10:41AM
Well, at least this might lead t some third part controllers that have sixaxis controls. Not that I care about them that much, but for games that require them, it sucks having to swap back.
McBrick @ Jun 30th 2009 10:44AM
Pretty much avoid 3rd party peripherals because they're mostly crap, even when they pretend to do things the first-party stuff doesn't. Oh, except for Logitech. Mostly top-notch across the board - mostly.
This will just make it a little harder to filter out the 3rd party stuff, unfortunately.
butlersp @ Jun 30th 2009 10:44AM
A media server would be nice especially if it was not able to be blocked by other websites. Also make the files transferable between PSP, PS3, PS2 and PC/Mac (firmware updated needed for all).
With PSP with tversity I have to have the music files as RSS feeds and the video need to download. I should just be able to stream it all.
Will all platforms I should be able to transfer media files. If I downloaded a video file and want to put it on my PC/Mac I should be able to do it via this application.
Heck there was something to network PS2 & PS3 that would be real handle especially if I could transfer the game saves over. Yeah I know about the should have been free game transfer thing Sony came out with.
Better yet get ready for the Hannah Montana colored controller for PS3 to go along with your PSP.
butlersp @ Jun 30th 2009 10:45AM
OR this will make 3rd party stuff more expensive since it has the PS logo on it now. Sony now levels the playing field of cheap crap
l555l PSN l555l @ Jun 30th 2009 10:59AM
They have already done this for a PS2 controller. Packaging and logos very similar, except for the extra button.
Bradwart @ Jun 30th 2009 11:49AM
They should offer to license RealTriggers. Give them some extra cash.
Str84rumBk (PSN) @ Jun 30th 2009 1:04PM
yea it deffinatly would but i think if they do the price on the "real triggers" would raise from $5 to $15
Stephen @ Jun 30th 2009 12:11PM
Damn youuuuuuu! Now I have that song in my head and it won't come out!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 12:41PM
Windows media player works good enough for you???? Really?? it doesnt even encode half of the best codecs....I use TVersity
Tim Parsons @ Jun 30th 2009 1:37PM
@ Chris
Last time I check Media Player didnt encode at all, the Media Server in it merely host files nothing more
I only use TVersity for files the PS3 doesnt support natively. . If your constantly trying to veiw files on your PS3 that it cant veiw natively then I can see why you perfer TVersity. But if the PS3 supports it I just play it as is via Media Player. Plus I can just hit Triangle and copy any pic/mp3/video file to my PS3, I don't see this option in TVeristy
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jun 30th 2009 3:50PM
you can copy stuff with TVersity...I do it all the time
