Dave Perry gives first video tour of Gaikai
Between OnLive and Gaikai, we're not sure who to trust less. Both systems are clearly operating under some form of unknown dark magic, allowing the mysterious services to stream high-def gaming directly into your television and computer browser. Both services though -- luckily and necessarily -- have representatives willing to happily test our skepticism in OnLive's Steve Perlman and Gaikai's Dave Perry.
The video (found after the break) has the latter demoing Gaikai, streaming games from Mario Kart 64 to Spore to EVE Online, all from his Vista-powered PC running Firefox on an 800-mile trip between the server and his home. He claims in the video to be streaming all of the games demoed from sub 1-megabit internet speeds and says that "even a NetBook" could run Gaikai with no problems. From what we can see, things are running smoothly, though unlike OnLive, we've yet to get our hands on the equipment. Perry says we'll see more at this month's Develop Conference, so for those of you itching for more Gaikai, you've got a two-week wait on your hands. Perhaps you should play some of those old, less magic-filled gaming consoles you have.

xtremeholymuffin @ Jul 1st 2009 1:37PM
wait what?
did my avatar just change?
Jawmuncher @ Jul 1st 2009 1:38PM
It did for you but for us it looks the same.
My avatar does the same thing.
It's Big Boss but sometimes when I post it makes it look like it went back to my bionic commando avatar.
So basically no matter what you see for everyone else it should stay the dead space girl
Apollo @ Jul 1st 2009 1:40PM
You know, the first time you did this, it was funny.
Seconds time........it's still funny! ;)
Ghen @ Jul 1st 2009 1:44PM
I see bionic commando :o
Comtar @ Jul 1st 2009 1:55PM
It's like a plague it's spreading!

MLS @ Jul 1st 2009 1:41PM
Good thing this is going on, because there is no interesting news today at all.
whymog @ Jul 1st 2009 1:37PM
Every time Joystiq Photoshops in the Dead Space Extraction Woman, the sun shines, children laugh, and birds sing in harmony.
Dash @ Jul 1st 2009 2:01PM
And a woman gets molested by a tentacle alien in space...
Matt @ Jul 1st 2009 1:39PM
What a dumb name that no one will be able to correctly pronounce.
David @ Jul 1st 2009 1:44PM
Somehow, I have more belief in this than OnLive.
Wardo @ Jul 1st 2009 1:47PM
I'm beginning to think they have to some sort of unhealthy obsession with that picture...
or maybe it's just me.
yokel @ Jul 1st 2009 1:54PM
I think you're right...
Blank-Mage @ Jul 1st 2009 1:47PM
I imagine at some point I'll walk outside and all passerby's will be the screaming chick.
...Good thing I don't go outside.
Spike @ Jul 1st 2009 1:52PM
+1
yokel @ Jul 1st 2009 1:55PM
I lol'ed at your comment. Thanks for the laugh. XD
UhMilhouse @ Jul 1st 2009 2:30PM
Instead of everyone having John Malkovich's head and saying "Malkovich" they'll have her head and be screaming like Margot Kidder just before she throws the dining room table out the window.
MystileArmor @ Jul 1st 2009 1:48PM
I don't know if I'm alone on this, but even if it works well, I don't want it.
I like having my boxes. I like being able to play my old games in 10 years.
If this is what's in stall for the future, I'm starting Amish 2.0. I'll keep my physical hardware.
ChronicTC7 @ Jul 1st 2009 2:01PM
ditto
sonicspike41 @ Jul 1st 2009 2:08PM
I partially agree with you.
I don't mind downloading games like Flower, which I felt was worth every penny, but in the end I can't help but compare PSN/XBLA/Wiiware games to flash games.
Almost all flash games are free, they load somewhat quickly, they can be pretty damn innovative at times, and are good for both quick pick up and play matches and even for those longer 30+ minute games... and they're free, did I mention that?
I like my download-only options to be as free as possible, because otherwise I can always just play a flash game for free or get the game on a disc for about the same price.
MystileArmor @ Jul 1st 2009 2:41PM
Well I don't mind paying 10 bucks for an XBLA game at all. That's still on my harddrive as well, so it's a bit more of a permanent thing then streaming is.
I never really rented games either, cause I'd figure I can save the money I'd spend on renting, put it aside and save up for a game I'd want to buy.
I see this whole thing as renting games kind of.

Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhh????

Same Dave Perry from Sacrifice? Still one of my ATF games. So weird, so fun.
DKiller79 @ Jul 1st 2009 2:14PM
COULD this work but that mean i would need Vista & FireFox but OnlIVE has a chance also because they have a micro console for TV's
Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Jul 1st 2009 2:22PM
off topic (not that it counts today xD)
what's my avatar? the avatar system is really messed up...
Sly @ Jul 1st 2009 2:31PM

TRON.dll @ Jul 1st 2009 2:30PM
How much.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 1st 2009 2:44PM
Damn this would be sweet. I'd get it for sure! Sounds too good to be true though. It's all gonna mess up once millions of people are trying to play games. They compared it to youtube. Uhh, last time I checked Youtube lags and HD Youtube takes even longer to load on all the PC's I've tried it on and isn't as smooth as Perry makes it sound on the Gaikai website. lol
deanb @ Jul 1st 2009 3:56PM
HD youtube isn't even HD either.
Brackynews @ Jul 1st 2009 6:33PM
Gaikai? Brand name recognition FAIL.
"Ya man, I was playing on Geico last weekend..."
"What?"
OnLive isn't much better. Adobe and Microsoft product trademarks abound. And the first system crash would be followed by a Joystiq graphic of *NoLive*.
But on a positive note, this is exactly what Adobe is hoping for, until web browsers can run 64-bit applications.
AtomicPlayboy @ Jul 1st 2009 6:52PM
Obligatory "who gives a cold shit about anything Dave Perry does" post.
adiaz87 @ Jul 1st 2009 10:57PM
Musroom cup on 50 cc? What a n00b.
