Dead Space Extraction box art is terrified and screaming

The guys at Visceral Games have revealed the box art for the upcoming Wiixclusive Dead Space prequel, Dead Space Extraction. This time, there's no sign of Isaac or his iconic space suit. Instead, it consists of a terrified and screaming woman protecting a man from evil space beasties -- an ultimately futile battle if the events of the first game are anything to go by.
We're all for equal opportunities in the space monster-battling workplace, but this terrified and screaming woman is using Isaac's plasma cutter -- is she a space-engineer too? We suppose anything will do when you're terrified and screaming for your life. Try not to look at the artwork too long, you might get the image of that poor woman's face stuck in your head, like we have ...

So wait, this is a prequel? Where the hell have I been?
Sabastian Chadwick McGirt @ Jul 1st 2009 10:08AM
Yes it is a prequel. Extraction takes place during the initial monster break out (I forget what they are actually called in the game).
On that note, that's an awesome cover.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 1st 2009 11:21AM
Now the animated movie is officially garbage.
RuinedSucks @ Jul 1st 2009 2:41PM
@Mr. ESC.
Movie was ruined when they cast Mr. Mental as one of the main characters...
bamb0o-stick @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:12AM
Manly McBeef: The animated movie has always BEEN garbage. Where have you been indeed, lol.
Frivolous @ Jul 1st 2009 10:07AM
Whoa, a chick on the front of a box, and shes not wearing a skimpy outfit OR has double E breasts... a nice change of pace from your typical video game marketing.
Mr Khan @ Jul 1st 2009 10:43AM
But she *is* being molested by some sort of monster, so...
Temidien @ Jul 1st 2009 10:57AM
Still needs more tentacle.
il_duce620 @ Jul 1st 2009 10:09AM
I like it.
C.A. @ Jul 1st 2009 6:25PM
I had to keep going back posts to find out what the heck was going on here...
dave @ Jul 1st 2009 10:45PM
Oh, so THIS is the article that started off the graphic mayhem on Joystiq.
I generally only read PS3 tagged stuff, but when that woman's face started appearing everywhere, I had to find out why. Forced me to load the full website for once.
It's pretty funny. I like it. Even still, I hope not to see that face again tomorrow, although it may just be burned into my mind for all time now.
TheBrainninja @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:07PM
I did the same thing, I missed this post yesterday. I was so confused yet entertained by her face's ubiquity.
Bowser Rogozhin: Death of a Ladies Man @ Jul 1st 2009 10:08AM
That's some really striking box-art, looks a little like a movie poster from the 40s or 50s, too bad it's a rail shooter.
guttertalk @ Jul 1st 2009 10:59AM
It has an interesting design:
+ The blur effect on the tentacles (even on the title)
+ The canted angle (not novel but not that common)
+ The monster is unseen, a staple of good scifi.
+ Using blue for the foregrounded action and a hot color for the background. It gives a "not quite right" effect, like the canted angle.
I like the painted look of it, too.
D dogg @ Jul 1st 2009 12:18PM
"Using blue for the foregrounded action and a hot color for the background. It gives a "not quite right" effect, like the canted angle."
If you've played the game, the blue is the lighting from the weapon and the red (or hot color for the background as you put it) is from the fires and emergency lights. Your post seemed to be critiquing the design choices and I just didn't want you to think they chose the blue and red colors based off design rather than function.
Mr. Picklesworth @ Jul 1st 2009 12:23PM
D dogg, the idea is that warm and cold colours have different effects on the eye, helping to create perspective. It's common to use warm colours in the foreground since they attract attention while the colder colours push it away, so to speak.
Supercool4 @ Jul 1st 2009 10:10AM
Best boxart I've seen in a long time.
Temidien @ Jul 1st 2009 10:58AM
Really? Looks like mediocre fanart to me.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 1st 2009 10:11AM
If the boxart had been this scene just a few seconds later it undoubtedly, would have been NSFW
Wizzleteets @ Jul 1st 2009 10:11AM
I'm partial to the unibrowed man in the background.
Eh @ Jul 1st 2009 12:23PM
you mean Zack Morris?
Pachter the Haiku Artist @ Jul 1st 2009 10:13AM
I love cheesy artwork covers.
j.howlett @ Jul 1st 2009 10:14AM
i saw the dead space movie on tv. does this take place between that and the first game?
edhe @ Jul 1st 2009 12:28PM
Yeah this takes place around the start of the film, the film really really quickly skips over all this stuff as it was already covered in webisodes [maybe still avail on live], and will be covered more in this.
Considering this is about the extraction of colonists from a colony that didn't survive, i can't anticipate a happy ending.
kentuckyfried @ Jul 1st 2009 5:59PM
Please, not another slasher-flick where everybody dies...
The best horror movies to me is the ones where there's at least one survivor. Without hope, where is the will to live?
Do something different too, where most/all the virgins die and all the people who are getting in on during the film survive, lol.
Exploding Barrel @ Jul 1st 2009 10:15AM
I don't know--looks kind of cheesy 80's era to me. What's with the terrible Wii covers and artwork recently? First The Conduit, now this. Makes me want to pull out my trapper keeper and G.I. Joe figures.
Frivolous @ Jul 1st 2009 10:22AM
I agree with you on the Conduit box-art, but this is different... and you shouldn't be pulling out your G.I. Joes, this is straight out of Choose your Own Adventure.
Archr5 @ Jul 1st 2009 10:17AM
Sweet! I've been waiting for the freaky chick from The Cars to end up in her own video game! http://blog.newsweek.com/photos/levelup/images/original/The-Cars-album-cover.aspx
Maulok @ Jul 1st 2009 10:21AM
Dead Space on Wii. Now with waggle controlled tentacle breast cupping action!
At least that's what I took from a glance at the cover.
Maulok @ Jul 1st 2009 10:24AM
After my initial fast-scroll impressions, I dig it.
ThekonamiMan @ Jul 1st 2009 10:25AM
Bad cover is bad.
ChomskyKnows @ Jul 1st 2009 10:25AM
You Wii guys are lucky. This game kicked serious ass last year on the other platforms.
I don't wanna play as the guy from Saved By The Bell however...
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 1st 2009 10:42AM
this game is completely different from Dead Space. It's a prequel, but more importantly it's a rail shooter
Nathan-DTS @ Jul 1st 2009 11:15AM
I hate prequels; I know what's going to happen. I bet that this game ends with the protaganist sending a distress beacon, just before being slaughtered.
finnith @ Jul 1st 2009 3:00PM
That's what happened with almost every protagonist in the Dead Space universe.
JW @ Jul 1st 2009 10:38AM
umm..... that looks like Zack Morris back there. Wheres the milk-carton cell-phone? :)
Jerk Face @ Jul 1st 2009 12:31PM
AAAH! I knew I couldn't be the only one who noticed it! LOL
mark white @ Jul 1st 2009 10:32AM
the guy kinda looks like bruce campbell
jimwboyd @ Jul 4th 2009 10:11PM
The man looks like hes actually ready to attack the girl. look where he is focusing. Perhaps he is infected..
MLS @ Jul 1st 2009 10:48AM
There is a more obviously terrified woman version of this cover art, with her eyes wide open in fear. I saw it on the nets last night. It also had the guy in the background making more of a OMG face. Believe it or not, this is the more rugged/tough cover art.
Also, what's this about questioning why she is using Issac's weapon? If I recall, Issac finds the plasma cutter. It's not his.
SEVENim @ Jul 1st 2009 10:48AM
I saw pictures of what happened minutes after this cover on 4chan once.
snarfoogle @ Jul 1st 2009 11:09AM
I'd be terrified and screaming too if I bought another rail shooter for my Wii. Hopefully this one won't have quick-time wagglevents like Umbrella Chronicles.
Ujn Hunter @ Jul 1st 2009 11:11AM
Why is Ewan McGregor on the cover of Dead Space?
Muskie @ Jul 1st 2009 11:12AM
The obviously terrified woman is Elizabeth Cross. ( http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Elizabeth_Cross )
Not an engineer, actually. A Horticulturalist.
Yup, that's right.
Half Life had you playing a Theoretical Physicist.
Dead Space had you playing an Engineer.
Extraction has you playing a GARDENER.
Petebot330 @ Jul 1st 2009 11:43AM
But she’s a SPACE Gardener.
MLS @ Jul 1st 2009 11:46AM
At least you aren't a plumber. m i rite?
ranxerox @ Jul 1st 2009 5:08PM
Hey, what about Silent Running? Bruce Dern played a murderous horticulturist in space. He kicked ass!
Levi (God Hand Defense Force) @ Jul 1st 2009 6:05PM
I was about to mention Silent Running, ranxerox. Though I wouldn't say that he kicked ass.
Trickob @ Jul 1st 2009 6:44PM
I just watched that movie (via nextflix via xbox 360) and I thought it was the stupidest movie ever. That probably didn't need to be said but I said it anyway.
-Vexx- @ Jul 1st 2009 11:19AM
Looks like a bad movie poster
