Latest Square Enix teaser game revealed as Final Fantasy Gaiden: The Four Warriors of Light

The Jump scan shows the same dragon-riding artwork found on the teaser site, with two more characters than the site currently shows, revealing a party of four. Final Fantasy Gaiden: The Four Warriors of Light (not related to the Game Boy Final Fantasy Adventure, known in Japan as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden) is an original turn-based Final Fantasy RPG for DS, in the same style as the recent Final Fantasy DS remakes.
The scan refers to a "four-person party adventure," but we can't tell if that means multiplayer or if it's just a reference to parties controlled by a single player. According to IGN, the main character is a boy who must rescue a princess from a witch.
The battle system is a familiar turn-based, menu-driven system, with what appears to be the addition of a sort of action points: each character's status includes a certain number of yellow dots, and each action seems to have a dot next to it, indicating a cost. Final Fantasy Gaiden will be out this fall in Japan, and we wouldn't be too surprised to see it in North America the following summer for $40.

Not quite as good a shop, but still appreciated JC ^^
Frivolous @ Jul 1st 2009 11:52AM
I think she's speaking Japanese...
Desert Eagle @ Jul 1st 2009 8:26PM
I literally fell off my chair laughing after reading your comment Frivolous.
Thanks for giving me the laugh of the day dude!
Araman @ Jul 1st 2009 11:56AM
Doesn't explicitly say it, but I think this is going to turn out to be a re-imagining of Final Fantasy 1 in the style of FF3 and FF4's transformations.
That just begs the question... when is FF6 finally going to get this treatment, that it fully deserves? :(
Jerk Face @ Jul 1st 2009 12:24PM
For. Real.
I have no idea why they keep remaking the old ones no one cares about, when poor old VI sits waiting to be given the refresh it is due! Best Final Fantasy ever? Maybe.
Alex M @ Jul 1st 2009 3:46PM
That was my interpretation, as well. FF1 in 3D ...
Uhm, it'll be cool, I guess. And surely they can add lots of stuff considering the first game was quite simple. But c'mon, if Squeenix is going to remake games, surely there are better (read: more popular) places to start.
Meh @ Jul 1st 2009 4:29PM
FF6 doesn't deserve to be downgraded to 3D.
lasersanchez @ Jul 1st 2009 11:49PM
God, I LOVE FF6! I'm not sure if it needs to be in 3D though. The game is beautiful enough as is.
Girugamuk (Moptimus Slimed) @ Jul 1st 2009 11:59AM
so its not a Mana game?
HotLimit @ Jul 1st 2009 2:03PM
Gaiden can mean any side story. It's a catch-all term for when they want the hype of a popular name without having to live up to the quality of the name.
PR0F3TA @ Jul 1st 2009 12:02PM
the horror.
Kris @ Jul 1st 2009 12:02PM
hahah, wonder why they keep puting that face on everything
UhMilhouse @ Jul 1st 2009 2:16PM
It's made it one of the more funny days on Joystiq that I can remember.
AvA (ice~) @ Jul 1st 2009 2:19PM
joystiqs on a roll with this and Patcher articles ;]
mr nimblewick @ Jul 1st 2009 12:03PM
It'll be multiplayer. Otherwise they would have just named it "Final Fantasy Gaiden: The Warriors of Light"
eNrique @ Jul 1st 2009 12:20PM
What about if your party is composed by 4 and there are just 4 warriors of light?
mr nimblewick @ Jul 1st 2009 12:23PM
They still would have dropped "Four" from the title. Japanese devs like to be clever like that. Think "Four Swords Adventures."
Jerk Face @ Jul 1st 2009 12:26PM
This has been another episode of Rampant Speculation Theater, starring mr nimblewick.
mr nimblewick @ Jul 1st 2009 12:30PM
Trend is not rampant speculation.
James @ Jul 1st 2009 2:48PM
Well the way it's written does rather imply that it's multiplayer. "four person party".
It's hardly "rampant" speculation. Seems fairly likely.
Cosmo (formerly Chin-Poh) @ Jul 1st 2009 12:06PM
So yesterday was Pachter day, now today is Dead Space: Extraction horrified chick day?
Dirty @ Jul 1st 2009 12:15PM
Well it makes sense. That is the face I was making all day after reading all the Pachter news.
Chan @ Jul 1st 2009 12:29PM
Wonder if they're being held at gun point.
GohanGVO @ Jul 1st 2009 12:13PM
The visual style makes me think the game should be called "Final Fantasy Gaiden: The Wind Waker." :p
CJC @ Jul 1st 2009 12:18PM
Now I'm going to be a little disappointed when you can't play as the screaming chick.
Neo Samurai @ Jul 1st 2009 12:23PM
This is by far my favorite dead space chick shop so far
Mr Khan @ Jul 1st 2009 12:40PM
The expression fits in hilariously with the over-the-top Japanese speech bubble
Tim @ Jul 1st 2009 12:34PM
I hope it has wi-fi and as usual, I'll wait for two more years for this to be $20.
Mr Khan @ Jul 1st 2009 12:39PM
I've found i appreciate the older Final Fantasies more after playing III DS. So arbitrary, so unabashed in their difficulty and the endless grinding required, and pleasantly light on story.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 1st 2009 12:40PM
That character should be real.
Horror Face FTW.
Elranzer @ Jul 1st 2009 12:58PM
Great, another DS game.
How is it that Square Enix's epic PS3/360 project is taking 5 years but they're able to churn out about 20 DS games a year? I love the DS and all but I'd love to actually play something on my TV once in a while.
sRc @ Jul 1st 2009 1:18PM
...other teams working on other projects?
jsut @ Jul 1st 2009 2:24PM
I agree. They make excellent commute games, since knocking out a quick 30-minute grind on the way to work isn't particularly tedious, and the lightness of the story prevents you getting too engrossed and missing your stop. "Four heroes. Save the crystal, save the world. Go!"
sushibot12 @ Jul 1st 2009 4:19PM
I suspect this might be the prequel to FF1 perhaps. The 4 warriors of light getting together, and then journey to find the four crystal orbs. Just some food for thought.
Bluebreaker @ Jul 1st 2009 7:22PM
Or it could be a sequel, supposedly they never broke Garland's Time Loop from the original game.
NuevoVida @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:17AM
Well this sounds good. My only concern is will this game Final Fantasy Gaiden feature online multiplayer game play like FFCC: Echoes of Time does? And will this game be released in North America and Europe this year or will we have to wait until January of 2010? Let hope it's the former and not the latter.
