Pachter: Nintendo is benefiting from global recession side effects

Pachter writes on page nine of the report, "The global recession served to benefit Nintendo at its competitors' expense," referencing Microsoft and Sony as having slower console sales this generation due to HDTV functionality built into the systems. He argues that consumers who might purchase the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 are more likely to buy the Wii not only because of the lower price point, but because of the subsequent HDTV purchase price. "Expect most consumers to defer purchasing a PS3 or an Xbox 360 until they have purchased an HD monitor," Pachter explains. Though we're not convinced that the same folks who would be purchasing an Xbox 360 or a PS3 would be running out to buy a Nintendo Wii in every case, we digress. What say you, Joystiq Biomass?

Alot of Pachter lately. Anyone starting to like him and his speculations yet?
Cypher @ Jul 1st 2009 4:28AM
Hmmmmmm....
Well, I don't think I can speak for every Joystiq reade-
NO.
No Kills @ Jul 1st 2009 4:41AM
Next he's gonna tell us all consoles explode on 2012...
eldee @ Jul 1st 2009 5:47AM
yeah, it's getting old tbh..
what do we care what he predicts anyway? he's wrong as often as he is right. maybe we can just start flipping a coin and not post the retarded speculation of some wall street asshat.
mr.schuebel @ Jul 1st 2009 9:57AM
Enough about this fucking man. His 15 minutes were long over - Fuck Joystiq, quit writing about him every single day.
aggrazel @ Jul 1st 2009 10:37AM
Don't cause a fuss. I'll have your pachter. I love it. I'm having pachter pachter pachter pachter pachter pachter pachter beaked beans pachter pachter pachter and pachter!
Duke @ Jul 1st 2009 11:27AM
Pachter will predict something that Pachter wants to think about and then Pachter will agree with Pachter to Pachter's detriment. You just wait and see! (Seriously, he's getting annoying.)
whylekat @ Jul 1st 2009 1:07PM
I still have no idea who he is or why any of us should give a fudge what he think..?
EihBeir @ Jul 1st 2009 4:11AM
Looks like Joystiq is trying to get ahead on their Unsubstantiated Bullshit quota.
Cj @ Jul 1st 2009 4:16AM
No more Pachter! Please stop!
simpleanarchy @ Jul 1st 2009 4:18AM
My balls burst from Pachter overload :'(
WREturns @ Jul 1st 2009 8:12AM
Pachter gives you blue balls? Uh...
Cypher @ Jul 1st 2009 4:22AM
Pfft. I'm a better analyst than Pachter.
(rolls dice)
Hmm... Microsoft comes in last, Nintendo reveals WiiHD, and PS2 becomes irrelevant.
When making Pachter dice, be sure to add 1 obvious event, 1 random prediction, 1 stupid prediction, and fill whatever's left with predictions that are random AND stupid!
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 1st 2009 11:36AM
You forgot an important one:
Point at the obvious and when someone asks you why do you think that redirect them to the HDTV argument.
Rich @ Jul 1st 2009 4:24AM
this is SOOOOO done on purpose
alakazam9891 @ Jul 1st 2009 4:26AM
You know, he may not be that far off. I got my Wii back in 2006 when I had a regular SDTV, and didn't get my 360 until a couple days after I got an HDTV in 2007. I probably would have bought a 360 regardless but who knows.
jCarmichael @ Jul 1st 2009 5:07AM
i Brought my Xbox after playing a friends and then saved up and got a HDTV
No Kills @ Jul 1st 2009 4:30AM
When i bought a wii i never thought, "hmm since i don't own a hdtv, this is the perfect console for me"
no, i thought it would fun to waggle, i mean accurate motion controls. (kidding, naturally ;])
who's with me?
Viking @ Jul 1st 2009 4:36AM
Sorry, not me, I didn't buy a Wii, because I got tired of it after just a few hours of playing, played it at my friend's house.
Although I did camp outside the store on launch so I could give one as christmas present to someone in the family. Just because I had little to do, and could keep my friend with company.
Is this relevant? Meh, Pachter doens't care.
No Kills @ Jul 1st 2009 4:40AM
Yeah, i sold mine to my brother after i played all the good games, i got rock band for exchange of my wii.
then bought me a PS3.
Sigh...
Forget Pachter.
BananaBoat @ Jul 1st 2009 4:36AM
OKAAAAAAAAA-SANNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make it stoppppppppppppppppppp
Reinard @ Jul 1st 2009 4:42AM
I'm starting to think Joystiq is trolling us.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jul 1st 2009 4:47AM
They learn from their commenters, I bet.
JoeTheBlow @ Jul 1st 2009 4:49AM
Headline should read: "Pachter: Joystiq is benefiting from analyst obsession side effects"
As in, the lazy bastards just print whatever shit he spews out.
Phil @ Jul 1st 2009 4:44AM
We need a catchy internets term to use for Pachter...
Pach-dictions?
Pachter Watch?
Pach-cast?
Come on people! If this guy is gonna bug the hell out of us with his damn reports, WE MUST COME UP WITH SOMETHING TO COUNTERBALANCE IT.
Dowse @ Jul 1st 2009 6:22AM
Thats pachtarded
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 1st 2009 9:06AM
I like veloci-pachter, personally.
Ethan @ Jul 1st 2009 9:29AM
Pach of lies
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 1st 2009 11:37AM
That's some patchshit.
biodometz @ Jul 1st 2009 4:45AM
pachter's a retard.
Boff @ Jul 1st 2009 4:46AM
I think that for many people (non-'core'), the number of lines that their TV's can display has NOTHING to do with it.
I would have thought games, price, and/or peer pressure would be the biggest factors in the consumer's minds.
But what do I know eh? (Not much less than Pachter from the looks of things)
bVork @ Jul 1st 2009 4:56AM
So where the hell is this report, anyway? Is there some place that us plebes could read it for ourselves?
sam @ Jul 1st 2009 5:50AM
Sure! If you've got several thousand dollars to spare... [I didn't actually look it up, but this kind of report is usually paid-for.]
Really, if this is a 201-page report, seems like we're getting a big favour by only seeing the selected highlights :)
Shadow_Modder @ Jul 1st 2009 5:09AM
Fuck... Stop the Patcher posts!!! I'm browsing the front page and see at least 5 with Patcher in the title... just post all of the bullshit on a single blog post, I don't need to be scrolling down through all that crap the guy says!
Even if I just go to http://playstation.joystiq.com/ I see 4 posts about the idiot!!
GewurztraminerX @ Jul 1st 2009 5:11AM
I'm glad I'm going on vacation tomorrow, because then I won't be able to check up on things here at Pachter-dot-$#%ing.com!
sheesh
GewurztraminerX @ Jul 1st 2009 5:51AM
Hmm... actually, I'm not usually that harsh (which is partly my point) but let me rephrase:
Practice Pachter-post pruning / prevention.
Pretty please?
Author X @ Jul 1st 2009 5:12AM
Hmm... on the one hand, he actually attempted to provide justification for his prediction, which is a nice change of Pachter pace. On the other hand, his justification is laughably irrelevant.
People are NOT buying a 360/PS3 because it DOES have HD? I doubt that anyone without an HD television even pays attention to that. If they do, I still doubt their preference would default to the non-future-proof console.
There are plenty of reasons to buy a Wii over a 360/PS3 (price, fan of minigames/waggle, want more split-screen/party game support, just prefer Nintendo first party games over MS/Sony). But that is not one of them.
Candlejack @ Jul 1st 2009 5:18AM
I think I speak for all of your readers when I say STOP REPORTING WHAT THIS IDIOT SAYS! I don't care if news is slow but this moron is predicting either obvious events or complete BS he pulled out his ass.
Oh, the cheapest and most family friendly console benefited from a recession? Who would have guess that the console that satisfies the whole family AND is cheap would be a hit seller when the wallets start shrinking?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP REPORTING ANYTHING THIS GUY SAYS, UNLESS HE DIES!!!!!!!!
Lloyd @ Jul 1st 2009 6:00AM
why dont you guys go ahead and give pachter his own column on joystiq. seriously? kinda tired of this, and i can't be the only one.
.jpg @ Jul 1st 2009 6:05AM
dude, me too. there's way too much patcher, and honestly who cares what he thinks?
Marc @ Jul 1st 2009 7:04AM
He's completely right. I'm a PS2 owner with a job, wife, kids, mortage, etc. I wanted to get a new console for my son and I to play, and naturally thought of a PS3. But then I realised once I had that I'd want a HD tele, as I'm paying premium price for the PS3 partly because it can do HD. Then there's moving to buying Blu-Ray movies, etc. So with the current economics I decided against the TV, so decided against paying for a PS3 that I couldn't get full use out of, so went for a Wii. Hardcore gameboys won't fit this trend, but they're in the minority. Families, older men with jobs and partners, etc. account for the majority of tech stuff purchased and I agree with Pachter that they are following this trend.
Ekauq @ Jul 1st 2009 7:15AM
eh...i like the original version of this pic better

Ethan @ Jul 1st 2009 9:34AM
The man makes quite narrow, surface analysis that really anybody could know from reading games news. Except he doesn't, he jumps to stupid conclusions, because he clearly isn't in touch with what's happening now, let alone in 6 months time.
Benjamin Heckendorn @ Jul 1st 2009 9:48AM
Yes, obviously because an Xbox 360 or PS3 is completely useless and no fun without an HDTV. Nintendo has the best marketing and caters to women, period.
Again, there is too much journalism in the world these days based off analysts. Instead of real things happening, an analyst makes a guess and that's somehow news. Just like these people saying "the recession will end this summer!" and for some stupid reason that rallies Wall Street until of course they see the latest job loss data.
Edicius @ Jul 1st 2009 10:14AM
Why does he think that the Wii is still the cheapest console?
Ashitaka @ Jul 1st 2009 10:16AM
Please, just make it stop!
ChomskyKnows @ Jul 1st 2009 10:25AM
Can we down vote Pachter somehow?
guttertalk @ Jul 1st 2009 10:49AM
I like the Pachter posts just to see everyone's head explode.
Joystiq should do some research: Dig up Pachter's past predictions and score him for accuracy--right, wrong, and still uncertain.
I suspect he's right more often than not.
patrickhuynguyen @ Jul 1st 2009 11:35AM
will this guy ever stop talking? i can't believe he gets paid from making random guesses.
nriveraexpress @ Jul 1st 2009 11:44AM
you know i actually like the guy even though he is sometimes wrong, but joysiq really needs to hop off his dick
