Thanks to Silverlight, Microsoft's answer to Adobe's cross-platform Flash standard, Xbox 360 owners will soon be able to experience the thrill of high-definition interactive advertisements. Speaking to MediaPost, Microsoft's advertising business group director, Sean Alexander, touted the ability for HD ads created using the technology to run in web browsers, on mobile phones and on the fancy-schmancy, multi-touch Surface "table computer" without needing to be re-written.
The tech is to be implemented on 360 "within the year," Alexander said. Though it would likely require a minimal download, we've got the feeling MS will save its roll-out for the next major Dashboard upgrade, rumored to hit this fall. We can't wait.

Agreed, Live better be free after this. There's no dedicated servers in games, so we're still using our bandwidth. Xbox Live offers little more than Steam or XFire which are free on their own. As it is, the Xbox 360 dashboard is full of ads as soon as I boot the system up. Steam has a splash page showing their latest games, but I can choose to have the app startup to a different tab. There's no ads on the free PSN either.
Netflix on the 360 doesn't even have 5.1, but ads will? Shows where Microsoft's priorities are. What about people like me whose ISPs have monthly bandwidth caps? I don't want it wasted on streaming 1080p and 5.1 ads.

I hate ads. I do. I do my absolute best to ignore the product being advertised. Let's face it though, ads are everywhere, EVEN WHEN YOU PAY FOR SOMETHING.
You rent a dvd, and sometimes they make it impossible to to go right to the menu, forcing you to sit through trailers and ads for tv or dvds.
You go to the movie theaters today and have to sit through friggin COMMERCIALS!!!!! COMMERCIALS?!?!?!?! That is the absolute worst. I hate it and I complain about it every single time I go to the theaters. I pay 9 friggin dollars a ticket, forgo snacks because Im not paying 10 bux for a small coke and popcorn. Then they have the audacity to make you watch ads. I know its not the movie theaters part, its Hollywoods but still.
So what Im getting at, as much as I dont like ads on my 360, I come to expect it. I will continue to ignore them and not be one of the suckers that buys something because they see it in an ad, especially when they advertise on a product you paid for.

Between the Dead Space meme and the Sprinkles IP ban I have laughed more today than I have in a while. Like uncontrollable, tears down my face, laughter. Had a brutal week that is now forgotten.

you these guys pretty much summed it up.. you all should buy a router that has a built in website blocker, through which you can block the ad servers :) it's what i do! ads are almost non existent on my home network :) though, the router is custom made and runs a small old computer that is connects the interwebs with my real router :P

I don't know why everyone and their mother wants a browser for Xbox 360. You do realize that it would be coming from Microsoft don't you? As in, it would be a Microsoft web browser, or some form of exploration device for the vastness of the internet - an Internet Explorer if you will.

If you have a Media Center enabled win-pc you can always download
mcebrowser 2.2 and use that. It's most definitely not the best way to
get a browser on your 360, but it works. Controls are just shoddy and
their is no sound support yet.

Great, so this means more of the ads playing in the NXE windows? Like they've done recently with movie trailers? (Pelham 123)

If were going to get ads like that then we shouldnt need to pay that 50 a year.

Or, alternately, if we're going to pay $50/year, we better not get any $%^&ing ads.
I'll gladly pay a premium to get ad-free content instead of having this content subsidized by intrusive, annoying pitches for products which I guarantee I will never use. Would that I could opt out of ads for TV, magazines, and all web sites as well, for some monthly fee.

Leave it to Microsoft to find a way to shove ads in EVERYWHERE. If we aren't careful, they will be broadcasting them to our dreams soon. I'm really excited for HD versions of the hideous "OBEY!" ads. That will be all kinds of fun, cleaning up all the vomit.

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I was pretty sure when they rolled out the NXE they said there wouldn't be any more ads like the old original dash board. So, if they're sticking with the current format, wouldn't we have to go to the "square" for the ad in the first place? I don't know about you guys, but I rarely, if ever, take a stroll down that "featured" menu. If they want to put more ads there, fine by me, I don't see most of them anyway.

Not everyone has Bluray and some of us dont plan to 'switch' over until its the only thing available. I for one am not going to buy a bluray player or a PS3. I personally hope they come up with a different format and make Bluray obsolete in the near future.

another format??
They will go all digital before that happens.....far too costly...
at any rate 1080p streaming = Shit....period....especially with all the connections in the US. I mean Streaming a 5GB+ Movie in 1080 is just unrealistic and downloading it to rent is also crazy
