Proof of the contrary can be found in Metal Gear Solid 4. I mean, look at Snakes mustache. It's amazing. Only real men have on like that.

How about the difficulties the unreal engine has w/ lighting (especially shadows), and how it's difficult to use w/ the havok physics engine?

i can honestly say i enjoyed reading that article. its behind the scenes of a game company.

so really gears of war shouldnt have got all the credit it gotten as a graphical powerhouse because thats all the engine is good for is stone and metal and dynamic lighting? i think hes a big phony! phony! hes a big phony!

Yes, of course. While his experiences come from Unreal 3, he mentions that it's a limitation of current tech.

Isn't one of their games/projects Fat Princess?
Also I'd be pretty sure on of their projects is UE4.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Titan Studios is part of Unreal yes?

You're wrong. Unreal is a game engine, owned and created by Epic. Titan Studios may use the Unreal engine, but it is not "part of" Unreal.

@Wired Knight

Actually WiredKnight deanb is correct in saying that Titan Studios (formerly Darkstar Industries) is wholly owned by Epic Games.

@deanb

Fat Princess is being published by Sony and it's Sony who owns the Fat Princess IP (not epic). In fact, Sony has completely funded both the PS3 & PSP versions of Fat Princess. I don't see much coorelation between the hair in Fat Princess and the hair that would be required for a Unreal Tournament or Gears Of War title. However, I think Cliffy B is just making excuses for his poor character design choices. Instead of owning that his vision was a bunch of bald hulks he blames the lack of hair on the platform. I seem to recall lots of other games whose characters have long hair.

I wasn't commenting on the hair thing here, more on what his 5 projects could be. As Joystiq have given 2 suggestions I thought I'd have a go at guessing the other 3.

Oh common, what about Dk and Starfox on Gamecube?....hairy hairy creatures...
Sure is far easy to gert an order of kids painting textures and metals, or buying them online, remapping...than programming hair... oh dont forget automatic normal maps...to get that parallax bumping on 5 minutes, and takes the rest of the day off...

BS, they could do hair... XBOX, PS2 and NGC HAD character with basic hair AND simualtion... 7 years ago... fighting games, etc... is just MORE easy to get the thing out of the picture and avoid unnecessary hair shader programming..

Hair worked back then because it matched the rest of the graphics: crappy. Now, we can do good hair to match the nice graphics, but it preforms like crap. So instead of having a good looking game with shitty looking hair as a compromise, they opt out of hair alotgether.

they could do it then because it matched the rest of the graphics: crap. they can't get away with ugly hair in an otherwise beautiful game nowadays. there were two ways to compromise: make the rest of your game look like it matches the hair, or remove the hair. pretty hair at the cost of performance is not worth it.

They are more concerned with things like metal $ rock, green life and hair are fairly hard to develop for. But I still dont see "realism" on any Real time engine, other than HDR lighting, pretty simple for "Dumb surfaces" with normal mapping, They are still repeating the same process over and over again. No Ambient oclussion whatsover, no fluid engines, no procesdural texturing, etc ...you know what went high? bandwidht to inject bitmapped textures.. and they are hammering over that all the time..oh yes,m you get processing power to get Natal, and Tracking devices, but NO to develop hair shaders..
As I said is pretty cheap to get an army of kids painting guns, tanks and walls...

The Unreal Engine 3 can produce amazing graphics. I cannot wait until Unreal 4 to come out with the next consoles (like its supposed to. Can we say Gears of War 3 using Unreal Engine 4?) But, heres the thing that gets me. Is the Unreal Engine both a graphics engine and a physics engine, or just a graphics engine? Because I seem to remember Cliffy B and the infamous meat cube, and was just wondering. (Oh and also, little side note here, if Unreal 3 is not a physics engine it should use the Euphoria engine. That is easily one of the best physics engine to date. A lot better than Havok. Every game should use Euphoria for physics.)

It basically has everything you need to make a game integrated inside of it ... It does it all in terms of in game effects of any kind. However, there has been some noise made that Epic doesn't properly support the engine to companies that liscense the product.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_Engine

The third generation Unreal Engine was designed for DirectX 9/10 PCs, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.[2] Its renderer supports many advanced techniques including HDRR, per-pixel lighting, and dynamic shadows, and builds upon the tools available in previous versions of the engine. Unreal Engine 3 IPP (Integrated Partners Program) includes:

Nvidia PhysX[3]
OC3 Entertainment FaceFX[4]
RAD Game Tools' Bink Video
