I *will* drop Gold if I'm subjected to TV-like commercials and other intrusive ads. I hardly ever need any online functionality anyway, so it wouldn't be a major loss. I'll be playing completely offline a lot more if this is the future of the Xbox.

When you read articles like this, you now know why I rarely do ANYTHING with my market place anymore. I get the occassional Rock Band pack or free theme, but these days I pass on just about everything else.

The beauty of what a company like Besthesda or Harmonix does is that if you wait long enough, you can get their DLC on an AD FREE DVD for the same cost (or less with the RB track packs) as buying the DLC online.

Digital Distribution of ANYTHING, from DLC to ADS, is not in the customer's best interests. EVER.

XBox 360 - At some point, you just want Major and the rest of the MS Team TO CUT THE CRAP and remember some of us ONLY want to play video games.

Yeah, I do not think I should be paying for the privilege of viewing ads. At least offer a disable feature or take a % off the cost of live.

This statement isn't comforting, he doesn't say "no ads," he says they are committed to enhancing XBox Live. What has Microsoft ever done that makes you believe that they care about their customers. They always straddle the line perfectly between annoying their customers and annoying their customers to the point of changing services/products.

And thus I stuck to my dreamcast when the first Xbox came out, and I avoided it this generation as well. I feel like I'm constantly nickled and dimed for every little thing with Microsoft - such as 30 different types of Windows Vista each costing more than the next for a very limited amount of additional features. Game-wise I like the 360, but it's Microsofts ways of methods of doing business that drive me nuts.

I'm sorry, but I thought there were already ads all over the dashboard. The first thing you see when it turns on is the 'spotlight' section, which is mostly ads for xbl content. Then there's the inside xbox and events section which usually have a few ads thrown in. Every time you select a game it loads up a dynamic ad with all the related dlc, themes and gamer pix.

As long as Sony doesnt start bombarding me with ads outside of Home I'm good....

for those of you complaining about ads inside of games, talk to the developers/publishers, as I believe they control those ads in games like NHL, Madden, 2K Sports, NBA Live, Etc.....

Thats the difference. PS3 is advert free, with the exception VidZone and Home (and then both subtle ads). I have no problems with that, as I am getting something in exchange for viewing them ads (videos and home).

What sucks is poor old Xbox owners getting boned $60 a year for a laggy P2P gaming service, plastered with ads on the dashboard and the idiots have been brainwashed by Microsoft shills telling them "cross game voice chat FTW..."..

I may be the onluy one, but in game ad's do not bother me, especially in a sporting game where the boards are covered with sponsers anyway. Or in burnout when the billboard have actual ads on them. Plus this could give developers more cash to make better games.

Just leave the ad's off the dashboard and the XMB and we're cool.

How exactly do ads enhance a gaming experience?

Gaming is supposed to be fun.
Having someone tell you what to buy is not fun.

I think Xzibit would sum it up as; "Yo Dawg, we heard you like paying so we put ads in yo XBL so you can pay while you pay."

Bad Argument: "You pay for cable and cable has ads, so paying for XBL with ads is comparable."

Here is why it is a bad argument:

You pay Microsoft for XBL and Microsoft gets payed for the ads.

You pay a cable company for TV and TV stations get payed for the ads. The cable company and the TV station are independent.

Cable Pays to also use those channels, aside from the ones that they own. And in turn they get to show their own commercials as well.

But the end result is still the same. You're paying for cable and getting advertisments.

At least on Live the experience isn't interrupted by them.

This is outright bullshit. If Gold members are being subjected to ads, what the hell are we paying membership fees for? I just don't see what I'm getting for my $50 subscription and have no problems canceling if I'm going to be forced to put up with ads.

You won't cancel.

And that's the problem with this kind of thing. If you REALLY want to show MS you mean business, get a bunch of people together and cancel service.

... Sell you 360's for a PS3, too.

Wiizer is right, you won't cancel. And neither will I, for that matter. At least not yet. I continue to pay for XBL Gold (though I've only paid about $40 for 14 months due to promos) because they still have the best online games and the best online multiplayer.

-BUT-
This new trend of "timed exclusives" is taking away from the benefit currently offered on Mircosoft's console. PS3 is (eventually) getting some of the great games that grant the 360 part of its appeal. The other "perks" of XBL Gold are deteriorating. "Deals of the Week" have been pretty sub-par. We don't get near as many freebies as we used to. In a year or two, and CERTAINLY by the next generation of consoles (whenever that will be), the PS3 may have fixed a number of the issues I have with it and I could very seriously jump ship.

"Little" things like this issue with ads really add up, and that's why people are raising such a stink. Microsoft can either listen, learn, improve, and continue to rake in tons of money over the next decade+ OR they can ignore us, make a little more money now, and watch as tons of gamers abandon their system in a year or two.

I don't really care about multi on the 360, so no, I don't have any real issues with canceling for a service that provides me with negligible benefit.

How does that benefit 360 users having exclusive content?

Let's say a couple of high profile games like GTA IV have exclusive stuff that the PS3 doesn't. That means that people who want said content will more than likely buy a 360 and increase the install base. Having an substantial install base catches the eye of developers who would have otherwise stuck with their console of preference (for example, devil may cry series on the PS2). So for those gamers who only have one console (in this example, the 360), exclusive content benefits them even if they don't buy it cause it helps to sway buyers who only have enough interest in gaming to have one console. Which, in turn, provides a larger install base that appeals to Devs looking to make more money.

(Sidenote: I have a PS3 and a 360)

That Silverlight logo is really abstract and complicated. Must give their graphic designers one hell of a headache.

Also I don't have Xbox Live so I can't really contribute any on-topic commentary.

Yes, ads should be mutually exclusive of paid subscriptions, but that's not the case in other media (magazines, cable tv, etc.), so I doubt MS will break that mold. Instead, they'll squeeze every cent out of XBL that they can.

If I get more ads on my dashboard, I will a.) cancel my Gold service; b.) mod my 360. Enough is enough.

But it's not near XBL quality. It is not.

I've spent a fair amount of time on my PS3 recently and I was really struck by how bare bones the PSN feels. I had actually given up on the mulitplayer online since it was always such a hassle. The design is improved and it's certainly functional but it just doesn't hold a candle to the fully integrated experience Live is w/the 360.

Have you ever tried setting up a large multiplayer game with a group of friends on the PSN? It's ridiculous. Not to mention I have to exit back to the XMB if I'm in the Playstation store. On the 360 it's as simple as starting/jumping into a party then 'invite party to game'. Done. Doesn't matter who's doing what or who's palying what - and you can jump from party to party in a second if you need to. I do that often since I have different groups of friends I game with/chat with.

I'm not saying anyone has to be happy paying for Live, but 7 cents a day? Even less if you go online and find a 12 mo for $40 or less. It's a pittance and the product is so great I've never once had a qualm about the price. And the ads aren't intrusive at all - they're usually back of the main channel (meaning you scroll to the right) and I rarely go there.

By the way no one is mentioning 1 vs 100 Live which is free for Gold users and ridiculous fun.

I get people point about the ads, but I have to say it doesn't interfere w/my online gaming at all. I am on Live all the time and I've never once found the ads intrusive.

The service is great, much better than the PSN (and I spend time on both), and I could care less about $50 a year - I spend more on coffee in a single month than I do on Live in a year.

Could Live be free? Probably. Does MS make enough money? No doubt. But as I business owner I try to maximize my volume in every way possible - especially in this economic climate where every dollar to the bottom line makes a difference. No business is any different.

Live is a great service that is fully integrated into the console experience - people pay for it because they want it - that does not make them an 'apologist' for MS. I absolutely have issues w/the way MS has handled the 360 but Live is definitely not one of them.

One more comment on this...

The ads are not commercials in the sense that you have to watch them. They are completely removed from the gaming experience and I can't remember the last time I looked at an ad that wasn't for same game content I was interested in.

People are acting as if you boot up your system and have to sit there watching commercials which is not the case in any way, shape or form.

Jesus Christ. Just address the fucking issue, already.

I'm a Gold subscriber, am I going to have fucking ads on my fucking dashboard? That answer is going to be "yes".

Will there ever be a time when I boot up my console and the first thing I see is an advertisement or a sponsored "message", as when there are system notifications? That answer is going to be "yes".

And the $60 dollar question: WHAT THE FUCK AM I PAYING YOU FOR, YOU DOUCHE BAGS.

I went to Major Nelson blog to read his whole statement myself. It basically just strikes me as a bunch of corporate PR bullshit speak. Basically the whole uproar that happened yesterday really got him on the defensive. A lot of video game websites have already called him out on it today.

Microsoft is just looking for an excuse to shove more ads in our faces. That's what it all boils down to.
