Miyamoto: Next Legend of Zelda won't be 'radically different'
If you subscribe to Nintendo Power, the latest issue should be arriving at your house very soon -- Aeropause has the scoop on some details on Nintendo's upcoming lineup from the issue. Most important to folks reading this text is likely what Miyamoto had to say regarding the new Legend of Zelda game, announced back at E3: "I don't think it's going to be that radically different." But, what about the theory of the girl being the Master Sword? Surely that is radically different!
In typical Nintendo fashion, that's all Miyamoto had to say. He left us hanging to speculate, and we're sure most will be able to turn this appetizer of a quote into a five-course meal.

Someone doesn't have a life beyond Joystiq...
Why do you keep coming back to people you don't like and that don't like you? I don't get it.
You must be a very lonely sad little individual, Sprinkles. I'm sorry your mommy didn't love you.
Vcize @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:14AM
Ocarina was one of my favorite games of all-time, but the series has gotten stale for me. All the basic things that the series was missing were cute for a while, but it's time to catch up and get with the times.
If this is just another "herd some sheep with a wooden sword then go to the forest, water, and fire temples" then I'll pass.
charlie b. @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:17AM
likewise. i mean, sure a series has to give gamers *some* sense of familiarity, but that doesn't mean every game should feel *exactly* like a game you've played before.
i'm sorry, but 20% of gameplay as a wolf does not a new game make.
WINterfang @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:21AM
Well most of the games follow a formula, give god of war 20 years and it will become tired just like another awesome games like Resident Evil,Metal slug etc.. but you can always make an awesome redesign and blow everything out of the water like RE4.
The only games I don't mind being the same are Pokemon.
Storm Eagle (P:FoXGameR, X:PullingADrifter) @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:23AM
Ocarina of Time is not only my favorite Zelda game, but it's my favorite game, period.
The thing about OoT is that the tech in the N64 made so many things possible for the Zelda series. Not so much now in the Gamecube/Wii renditions of the games.
I suspect that if Zelda had the power of the PS3 or 360 behind, we might have seen another huge leap in the series like we did in OoT. It's too bad Nintendo just discovered the DVD......
Matias @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:36AM
What innovation can HD or Hard drive give to Zelda?
Zelda is all about gameplay, wich is exactly what Nintendo is focused on, they're trying new ways to experience a game, wich is great to revive stale franchises.
Zelda can benefit more from WM+ than it could from HD. WM+ can refresh the whole combat system and puzzles.
Johnny Neat @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:41AM
Being there from the start (1987's The Hyrule Fantasy: The Legend of Zelda), I have to agree with you both and many others on that the Zelda series has become a bit same ol' same ol' in too many ways, which is better than new and horrible, but nonetheless a slow killer regardless if not checked. I know Ocarina of Time (Major's Mask as well) made a huge leaps to where we are today overall and were good at being the bridging point to today but now its a bit stale and possibly just too safe a bet as it is. I think better looking and bigger complex worlds would help.
Look, I don't want the series to go through a huge radical change or venture into risk taking territory the likes of the Sonic franchise for example, AT ALL, but I do think they need to make for one again the graphics and world to be a bit more detailed & complex for lack of a better words or explanations. It just sucks that to find the changes I would hope one day it could reach would mean a newer system with greater graphical & memory ability. Not that that is horrible but we are talking about now.
Don't get me wrong it's not all graphics either as I immensely enjoyed The Wind Waker a lot! But yeah I miss the cool and fun nature of A Link to the Past but we need to get back to what made that game so amazingly awesome. I hope it is not just memories of my youth or being of that age group to feel this way.
Look I just remembered, one thing that start making these to safe and a but confused is in how the game no longer can be completely done with strategy guides. I remember that all the answers where there for the players by just them playing and exploring. Now it's all about chance and or a guide to get through too many aspects of the game.
Doctor John Smith @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:53AM
I really wish Project Deluge had some kind of basis in reality, no matter how small. A change like that would be great for the series, imo.
Mr Khan @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:00PM
PS360 power would not do anything special for Zelda. Bigger and better, of course, just as any jump in power would, but no radical leap forward
Markez @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:01PM
"I suspect that if Zelda had the power of the PS3 or 360 behind, we might have seen another huge leap in the series like we did in OoT"
In graphics, sure. Otherwise this comment makes no sense whatsoever.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:14PM
I'm not sure that I completely disagree with storm eagle.
If you outfit your wife of 20 years with a new set of tits and a pair of heels, she'll be fun to ride again, even though the gameplay is the same.
WINterfang @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:31PM
Well I guess with Motion plus and a better understand of wii hardware miyamoto can make the new Zelda another classic.
Massmass @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:08PM
Thank you fellow Zelda "haters"!
It's about time the tide has turn and people can now see the series for what it is. Stale.
I loved A Link to the Past, and really, really liked OoT/Majora's mask. I even appreciated Wind Waker even though that's when I first started tasting something stale.
However, the formula must change or be greatly enhanced. I'm so sick of the formulaic dungeon crawling. The designs are dull, secrets are few, and it simply takes too long to do a single dungeon with very little reward. Sure, the boss fights can be enjoyable, but when you freaking know what weapon you're going to get before you've done three rooms in the dungeon, you know the designers have gotten lazy.
Also, let's stop with the gimmicks. It was barely ok to swallow an annoying fairy, but a wolf, a freak, a boat, a train, another boat... Come on, seriously... If they added more than they took away it may be worth it, but let's just get back to the core game and stop putting lipstick on a pig. Do that AFTER you update the core, if you must.
If you can't do 3D well anymore, go back to 2D (but away from DS/PSP) and remember what made Zelda awesome.
FACE EXTRACTION @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:52PM
I couldn't even bother finishing Twilight Princess. I enjoyed Wind Waker but this felt like a step backwards (or sideways). It bugged me that Link controlled exactly the same as he did in Ocarina of Time. I also did not enjoy being a dog at all. They don't have to completely reinvent the series but they at least need to do enough so that it doesn't feel like an Ocarina of Time expansion or reskin.
er, I mean... ZELDA NEEDS MORE ALIENS THAT I CAN SHOOT WITH MY LASER GUN.
Matias @ Jul 2nd 2009 2:21PM
Why did I get downvoted if I posted the exact same thing as other people, that HD can't do much for Zelda.
WM+ can do much more.
KaBob799 @ Jul 2nd 2009 2:28PM
Wind Waker is my favorite, and they actually did something different.
bm @ Jul 2nd 2009 4:45PM
Johnny Neat: "Don't get me wrong it's not all graphics either as I immensely enjoyed The Wind Waker a lot!"
Are you basically saying Wind Waker was NOT one of the very best looking games of last generation, even besting most of the horrible, bland, drab looking horse shit this generation? I certainly hope not.
Kuro @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:39PM
Really, has Zelda ever really changed?
bm @ Jul 3rd 2009 7:19AM
Uhh...wow. Yeah. Play the games sometime, genius.
SilverFireshot @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:14AM
It's been the same for 20+ years now, I don't expect it to be radically different.
ronEbear @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:38AM
+1
acefondu @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:44AM
And I don't want it to be radically different. The great thing about Zelda games are solving the dungeons and fighting the bosses all of which are different for each game. That's enough for me.
Shagittarius @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:17AM
Couldn't Nintendo just make a blanket statement about that for all their franchises?
Blanket will be living with his grandmother unless Diana Ross wants him.
The Dark Wang(Ohyeahcola in disguise) @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:53PM
EEEEEHEEEEEEE
WINterfang @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:18AM
I will get downvote because of this but Zelda games are getting on Madden category now.
At least Sonic reinvent himself a lot, yes he may suck but he sucks every year for a different reason.
Falcon6 @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:40AM
No...no, he sucks for pretty much the same reasons all the time. Bad controls, bad camera, freakin' Werehog...
Zelda can have a stale formula, but damn if it doesn't actually work. Twilight Princess wasn't exactly Super Mario Galaxy or anything, but it was definitely fun to me. That's kind of what Nintendo is these days...they either innovate and good at it or they use the same formula and are good at it.
The formula may be the same, but the formula works. Sonic might actually be a bit better if they stuck to their original formula.
Of course, that's all my opinion.
charlie b. @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:41AM
+1
Blank-Mage @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:57AM
He sucks every year for a different reason? Does that make it okay?
uncle jesse @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:00PM
Are you seriously comparing Zelda to Madden?
I can sort of understand what you are getti... actually, no. I don't understand it. It's not like Zelda games come out annually. Do people really want a radically different Zelda? I don't. Little upgrades would be cool, like actual voice acting (not for Link though, gotta keep that going), or epic cinematics, new weapons, motion plus controls, for example.
Mr Khan @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:03PM
No. Just, no.
This is a severe overreaction to Twilight Princess's similarities to OoT. Similarities that the fans DEMANDED after they freaked out about The WindWaker.
WINterfang @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:28PM
@Falcon6: The werehog has only being in one game.
Girugamuk (Moptimus Slimed) @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:38PM
one game, FOR NOW
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:37PM
I for one liked the Werehog it was like "Fisher Price:My first God of War" but I agree WTH with tthe controls and the camera? Well at least Unleashed was playable and I thought it was good but they have so many things to fix.I would give Sonic a second chance...on the X360 and PS3.
About Zelda I admit I have never played one in my life except for Phantom Hourglass that was too dull and not very memorable and the Brawl demos.
I hear some people didn't like Twilight Princess because it was too much like OoT and for the rating of OoT alone those people must be insane. If it is like OoT that means is good.
I haven't bought it yet, the price of Twilight Princess here is still over 90$ same as Metroid and with the Trilogy coming out maybe if I wait long enough I can get a Legend of Zelda collection with Twlight Princess and Wind Waker.
KenSharp @ Jul 2nd 2009 10:41PM
"At least Sonic reinvent himself a lot, yes he may suck but he sucks every year for a different reason."
You get a +1 just for the above line....absolutely hilarious....
deaftly @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:18AM
I'm hoping Link turns into Raptor Jesus and wins the video game armageddon in the next Zelda.
Blank-Mage @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:58AM
I would look to the next Super Smash Bros for that. Those smash balls are ridiculous.
Storm Eagle (P:FoXGameR, X:PullingADrifter) @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:20AM
I'm sure they'll just give the sword some new ability that adds more to the gameplay, like they did with the boomerang. I also suspect that at different intervals in the game, the sword will shape-shift and talk to you, guiding you on your quest to defeat Ganon, save Zelda, rescue Hyrule, kick Tingle or whatever it is your doing in this one.
MystileArmor @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:35PM

WREturns @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:26AM
I don't need Zelda to be crazy different. I want it to be fresh and fun and innovative but I don't need it to reinvent the wheel. Zelda is great because it's classic, not because it's way out there. It's all about an untried hero, a powerful sword, a beautiful princess and an evil villain. And that's fine. Now, that's not saying I don't want Nintendo to create new IPs that ARE crazy different but they don't have to use Zelda for that.
