Nintendo sponsors British game show

Obviously, we suspect Nintendo will use this opportunity as a promotional platform for the Brain Training series. If it were, say, Capcom looking for Britain's best brain, there would be cause for concern. MCV notes that in-show product placement is illegal, meaning that Nintendo will have to relegate the DS mentions to ads.

Strange
manyquestions @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:20PM
I thought the same thing. What kind of random, unnecessary law is that?
Bobulous @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:28PM
Not really. The UK has very strict laws about television advertising and sponsorship. For instance, a branded product or company can sponsor a show, but the sponsorship message cannot appear in the actual show itself. It has to be tagged on as a separate thing at before the start. Said product couldn't feature blatantly in the actual programme either. It helps stop our commercial television shows being one long advert presented as entertainment.
Y'know. Like 50s Soap Opera's in the US were. Or The Wizard is.

Odd. I'd have thought that the product placement ban only applied, understandably, to BBC shows but it's apparently something which applies to the commercial stations as well (though not imported shows, presumably).

I assume that since Nintendo is actually paying for the show, there'll be some greater level of advertising than just slots at the beginning and end of each break, which they do quite often anyway.
