PSP Go processor more than 40% faster than original

It's unclear what the added processor power will be used for. It may be necessary for PSP Go-specific features, like in-game XMB. But will it be used in more traditional gaming applications? If so, could we possibly see PSP Go-exclusive games? Perhaps. Nintendo has released a very small number of applications exclusively for the upgraded DSi, which also features a much beefier processor than its predecessor so there's portable precedence.
Update: Sony says the 480MHz was referring to the USB.

I hope that justifies its $250 price tag.
eNrique @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:45PM
Don't buy it, no one is forcing you to move on.
Seriously stop the whining, you got a chepaer option already.
Extinction @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:57PM
"no one is forcing you to move on."
The extra processing power will in the long run.
HAAS599 @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:09PM
the price will lower in the long run.
coyo t @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:48AM
the iphone costs thousands of dollars http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3642/3637847596_1f2961bc1b_o.png
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:45PM
Hey would you look at that, we finally found an actual benefit that the Go has over the others. It took a long time, but dammit what's important is we found it.
Still not worth $250 though....
Jrinswand @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:50PM
Yeah, but what are developers going to do with that extra processor power? More likely than not they'll be reluctant to utilize it because if they did, they'd be running the risk of alienating the millions of people that already own a PSP.
Wes @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:05PM
It could go the way of the N64 Expansion Pack were certain games...ie Jonna Dark...umm... Perfect Dark 64 yes had more people available in multiplayer and more detailed characters if you had the extra memory. If not, the graphics/multiplayer were the downgraded version.
It may be PSP Go users start getting bonus features or content not available to old PSP customers. That would suck for those whom prefer larger screens :D
Mr Khan @ Jul 2nd 2009 9:04PM
It'll be as useless as the DSi's, i bet.
ill trooper @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:11AM
"we finally found an actual benefit that the Go has over the others."
C'mon man, it's substantially smaller/more "portable." That's a benefit.
coyo t @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:51AM
the PSP does many many things, a faster browser with a newer flash player is one example where the extra power could be used
Sly @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:46PM
so they actually did improve some things then? admittedly, when i read this, my mind shot straight to homebrew. i really want to see what they can do with this, assuming they can hack it. and for the people who will reply to me saying the 3000 hasn't been hacked yet, it has been.
Draco @ Jul 2nd 2009 9:46PM
I'm thinking thats specifically the reason for the beefier version. make games PSPGo exclusive and you dont have to worry about pirates... for the time being.
cmonkey @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:47PM
Its probably just that the new part is cheaper or uses less power than the old part. I can't see them changing it otherwise.
Dreadhead541 @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:48PM
i don't like where this is going
Jacksons @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:48PM
This is thing kind of thing you bring up at a conference.
Jacksons @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:49PM
This is THE* Excellent typing, I know.
tuck @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:49PM
I was expecting something from pachter. We haven't had him in a headline since yesterday. OH GOD! SOMEONE CHECK HIS HOUSE! HE COULD BE DE... Oh wait that would be fine.
Jrinswand @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:55PM
Wow, that's kind of cruel, don't you think? Pachter's really not all that bad of a guy. He's just an analyst. It's his job to predict where the market is going to go.
Anyway, watch him on the Bonus Round over on GameTrailers. He's quite interesting in that video.
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:56PM
yeah that's kinda mean. sure patcher gets paid for the easiest job ever, but that doesn't mean we should say he's dead.
unless you want to take his job, that is.
Unplugged @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:49PM
I'm a bit stuck on the fence with the go because I have the money to get it, but I'm considering just getting 4 16gb micro memory sticks and 2 micro memory stick converters so I can have 2 memory sticks with 29 gb on each for less than the cost of the go.
On the other hand if there are go exclusive features, in-game XMB or exclusive games which I doubt, then I'm a little more persuaded to get the go.
Anyone else having similar upgrade issues?
Voshempa @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:30PM
Yes, but then I look at the price.
HDpurist @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:52PM
Awesome - can't wait buy the Go. I'll keep my godly PSP-1000 for all the homebrew goodness....and will keep my PSP Go updated with the latest and greatest firmware. I just hope the native games for it do live up to it's spectacular hardware capabilities.
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:57PM
wow, you are one smart shopper. i think.
Sly @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:28PM
he would be smarter if he got the PSP-2000 for homebrew. now THAT'S a machine.
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:54PM
now it's (almost) worth the $250.
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:55PM
who knows, now maybe it'll surpass the wii.
Ashitaka @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:48PM
wait a sec- hasn't it already?
I kid, I kid.
Extinction @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:56PM
So why wasn't it given 2 analog sticks since it will get exclusive games the others cant run?
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:56PM
if it has an APP store wouldnt that be the same as DSiWare?? I mean sure PSN has games but if the Go! has the app store and the 3000 doesnt then thats another thing it will have over the 3000....
I still wont buy one until it hits $199 as a bundle with a few games or $169 with the Go! itself
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:59PM
they would lose money then. just wait 3 months and buy the system for 200 bucks alone.
i mean seriously, you ask for it too cheaply. it has more capabilities then the psp 3000.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:17PM
lose money??? I seriously doubt that it cost as much to make as people say it does. My Guess is that it cost around $150 to make....$170 at the most. I mean the smaller screen, should cost less, the flash memory cant cost more than $30....this thing is pure profit for them from the jump....after its on the market for 6 months watch the price drop....
Snowblind @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:20PM
They already confirmed the Go doesn't cost as much to make. The only reason it's more expensive is because it's "premium".
Shoyz @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:56PM
I surely hope they don't make PSP-Go games. If you're going to have games exclusive to a Redesign, then why even bother having it be a redesign in the first place? You may as well have just made a PSP2. It's basically forcing you to buy a brand new console for a slightly larger library.
Shmil @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:57PM
Does anyone else think that the Go, while smaller and more pocket friendly, looks to be more uncomfortable to hold? Of course I haven't held it but I would think that placing your hands around the screen holding the edges of the 3000 seems more comfortable and natural to hold than the Go? I'm sure its just as ergonomic as the older models but it may be a preference thing.
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:02PM
if you have big hands, yes. if you have decent sized hands,it will feel like a skinny ps2 controller.
monkeyninja @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:20PM
is it just me, or does that hand holding the psp go in that picture look really weird? the side of the hand isnt that short and doesnt go into the pinky like that. and also, the hand looks really long like a monkey's hand. though i dont know why they would mess with it, so i guess its just me
laura @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:42PM
It looks about the same as my mylo-1, but the button placement on the go does bother me, I figure it'll take a while to get used.
TuxBobble @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:35AM
I find the opposite. The analog nub on the 3000 is really uncomfortable to me, because my hands are a bit too large for it. The nub moved over makes things MUCH better. It's actually the only reason I'm picking the Go over the 3000--I've never owned a PSP due to ergonomics, and now I'm going to be getting one.
So...this news is just a bonus for me! (Although it may mean nothing in the long run--we'll see)
MRLN @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:01PM
That's like a PS2 processor.
sony boy @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:07PM
it's stronger than the ps2. you know what the pspgo needs??? games that 3GB big. Like god of war. it would be a pretty game and a long one as well.
Ex14 @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:28PM
but if the game is 3GB i doubt the older PSP would run it. Is sony gonna alienate the "old" psp users?
DangerMouse @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:35PM
Just because a game is 3GB's doesn't mean it's going to look better than one that's 1.5.
Sly @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:37PM
sony boy didn't say it would look better. he said it could be longer. and that's true.
DangerMouse @ Jul 2nd 2009 10:03PM
I thought sony boy was referring to the graphics when he said "pretty".
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:20AM
he didn't say prettiER though. he said pretty like the first one.
Hexen @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:06PM
So the in game xmb could open up the possibility for custom music?
Sly @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:35PM
some games already have custom music actually.
Darlaten @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:16PM
The more information comes out about the Go, the more incompetent I think Sony is in terms of marketing. At E3 during the press conference, Sony says that there is no difference between the PSP-3000 and Go (reported on G4) aside from the smaller profile, bluetooth, and internal memory. Then we have the bomb shell price announcement that was simply absurd. Next, we have Sony execs saying that the PSP-3000 and Go are ment to exist side-by-side with all games working on both devices; as such, existing customers with PSP devices do not need to upgrade.
And then of course, there came all of the flack and complaints from the gaming community; the negative press on websites; and stores in Britian indicating that they were not going to carry the Go as there was no insenstive for them to do so, i.e., they can not make any money of the device and as they have no games or PSN cards to sell, they would not sacrifice their valuable floor space to it.
And now, out of the blue, we get an announcement that the Go is 40% faster! I wonder what else it does that Sony hasn't bothered to tell us. Hey Sony, this is something you announce at your press conference - it's a bloody selling point that would have made it easier for people to accept the $250.00 price listed. Oh, and if you get any other features that the device does, oh, I don't know, let's say, as a real web browser, you might want to let everyone know that to. Sheesh. Two monkeys and a chimpanzee could run the company better.
Ex14 @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:24PM
agreed man wth are sony PR doing? (other than flaming nintendo and MS) =_=''''
I betcha theres more features not revealed yet. still i wonder what the extra processing power is for.....better graphics?
