Splinter Cell: Conviction will take 12 hours to complete on normal says the game's creative director, Maxime Beland, in the latest issue of OXM. There will certainly be a harder difficultly level for folks that are into trial and error for 30 hours, but the "normal gamers" will get a well-sized adventure. Beland says this was done because he wants people to actually finish the game. That's quite a good idea.
Also, at around 12 hours of gameplay, Badass: The Game won't wear out its welcome -- if it keeps the action going. Of course, there'll be multiplayer to extend the experience, but we likely won't be able to crack skulls in urinals there ... or maybe we will, which would then confirm Splinter Cell as game of the year.

I know, I know. I've played it before and it's awesome. I just don't think I will EVER finish it and that would bother me. I also have a problem with buying games when I'm not even finished the last one I purchased. I'm sure many people share this issue with me. I have a nice little stack of unfinished business, too.

I know this comment will fade away, but what adult has all this time to devote to a campaign? With a 40 hour work week, plus commute, sustaining your life, and some social life isn't 12 hours the sweet spot.

See my reply to MarkHawk above. Some people have the time, others don't. No need for a downvote. It's just the way it is. Believe me, I wish I could fit in hours a day to play games, haha, that would be awesome.

That is a valid reason, but it's also valid when you consider that a large portion of gamers are in their teens and without a job, so when they save up their allowance (if they get one) for a month to buy a new $60 game and then beats the campaign in a day, you can imagine feeling a little bit ripped off. Multiplayer can only sustain it's novelty for so long as well, even more so if it doesn't maintain a long-lived online community.

Yeah I remember those days. Ironically enough we grew up to get jobs to pay for more games that we now don't have time to play.
I recommend they invest that $60 into Gamefly/Blockbuster unlimited rentals. How did we survive before that... getting lucky at the local video store, which still works from time to time. I also recommend not trading games at GameStop unless you are going to profit (like the FNR4 for $30 of Best Buy Clearance games you beat three weeks ago) and go to Goozex to trade. Takes a while, but get the request in early and keep a 2000 pt "bank" so you get the games in higher demand before they are old news.

Does no one remember what console games used to cost back in the 80's and how little time it takes to complete? Campaigns weren't long at all. Anyone with decent skill could beat Super Mario Bros in like an hour or two, and you HAD to because there was no saving the game and continuing later. It's just that you would spend a lot of time replaying the same damn level until you could beat it, but once you figure the game out, you can play from beginning to end in no time flat.
If people are complaining that a 12 hour game is not worth the money, then don't use save points and keep replaying the campaign from Level 1 every time. Viva la 80's!!!

Mics,
You're so right. No 'save points' back in the day (other than the occaisonal 'battery back up game' like Legend of Zelda). I remember being in sheer agony as a young tike trying to finish the ridiculously difficult Ghost & Goblins for the NES
viva la '80's indeed!
damn, I'm getting old......

You forgot a couple highlights.
Metriod rewarded you beating it faster (under 3 hours).
Other games like Mega Man (1)...forget it.
Also in the 80's and some of the 90's we had those horrible password systems. Good help you if you wrote it down wrong. Or lost it. You better hope Nintendo Power/Gamepro/EGM had one.

12 hours for $60 is total BS. Seriously. Maybe it's because I'm a old gamer (started with the Commodore PET back in '76), but I hate spending that much and blowing through it in that short of time. And NO, don't give me that marketing crap about how if you play through on easy, than normal, than hard it adds up to 40 hours or so. There's not a single linear plot game in 30 years I've played through more than once. Games like Sacred, Diablo, multi-character specific objective games, sure. But games like RE, super heroes, FPS's, nah.

I thought the entire point of games such as splinter cell/hitman was to try to pull of the "perfect mission"
I have never went and replayed the entire game start to end, but i have replayed single missions probably a hundred times to get it just right.
Maybe I am just a perfectionist.

I think we have good arguments on both sides, but 20+ hours of story is going to be a bit repetitive. Think of Lego Star Wars (or any others) . That was looong and repetitive after before you got 30% through it. That really pushed me away from a really good game

What are you talking about, stromm? Do the math. $60 for 12 hours = $5/hour. At that point you own the game and can keep it and play it again or trade it in for, what?, $25? So if you trade it in then you only spent about $40 for 12 hours in which case you got the game for $3.33/hour. If you keep it and play it again then your $ value per hour continues to decrease. If you go see a movie by yourself it costs about $10 and a standard movie length is 2-ish hours and we're back to $5/hour. However, you can't watch it again or trade it in. So what's the rip-off?

I have a feeling there will be no multiplayer. Not that I care if there isn't.

It's funny how they say they want people to actually finish the game, because I have never finished a Splinter Cell game before. I'd always get bored about half-way through and then stop playing. Good thing I never bought the games and only rented 'em.
