Here in the States, we've grown accustomed to certain luxuries: subsidized gasoline for our free Hummers (hey, gotta stimulate that economy!); a complimentary 72oz soda with every purchase (just buy anything!); a lifetime supply of type 2 diabetes; and, of course, monthly updates from NPD charting the sales numbers of the major video game consoles. Our friends in the UK aren't so fortunate. So when we get a peek behind that curtain, we look to share it with you.
And here, courtesy of UK retailer GAME's first-half fiscal statement, we find data from GfK Chart-Track for sales up to June 27th, 2009. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo is in the lead with the DS, having sold 2.7m in the past year, bringing its total up to 9.1m units (that includes 300,000 DSi units sold since launch). The Wii is in second place with 5.4m, up 2.3 from last year. And then we get to the main attraction: 360 and PS3 sales.
You'll recall that in February, Microsoft claimed the 360 bested the PS3 in overall European sales by 1m units, citing GfK Chart-Track data again. In the UK, the Xbox is siting pretty with 3.9m units, up 1.7 from last year, while the PS3 is at 2.2m, up 900k from last year (and, coincidentally, right where Microsoft would've been a year ago). In between the "big boys" is the PSP, with 3.3m consoles sold, up 500k from last year.
It's weird: despite their genetic differences (three stomachs? gross!) the video game shopping trends of UK citizens sound an awful lot like those in the States.

I buy one of each console a month, and store each in separate stomachs. Its the only way to be completely unfair, digest them all separately. I dare you to find fault with that argument!

It is odd that Britain is trending more towards American tastes this time around, while the rest of Europe has remained closer to what they were (though Nintendo has resumed dominance everywhere, they seem to lean more towards Sony than any other region)

In our next episode of "Mysterious Mysteries": " watch as he Wii mysteriously remains on top of sales, Game retailers can't explain how the Wii's are dissapearing from store shelves. Some say it's magic, other says it's ufo related, and others give a weirder theory, "Wii'pnosys". They claim Nintendo has got an array of satellites beaming "Wii'pnotic" rays at our population, they also say that's the reason why "Wii Play" and "Wii Fit" are on top of retail software sales, but in their case the beaming device is said to be inside their controllers." Also don't miss out "the mystery about infinite respawns revisited" and "the mystery of 10yr olds speaking idiotic gibberish on the mics while playing online". All of this and more on our next episode Of "Mysterious Mysteries"(mysterious Mario song here).

The reason the xbox ghetto 360 is selling more is because poor people can afford the arcade version. I teach elementary school and you won't believe how many of my students whose parents receive welfare own 360s. They also only own 1 or 2 games for it...The PS3 is beyond their price range.

Crap,
That's for passing on your anecdotal evidence. Of course, it means absolutely nothing, nor do the tie in numbers, or software sales even remotely support your assertation. But, thanks for playing!

me and about 20 people i know all got xbox's and enjoyed them when we had them call of duty 4 and fifa mainly, but 2 years later and there have been no half decent games released, so most of us have sold and moved to ps3 where great games are out and more coming out in november and the start of next year. the xbox doesn't have anything better coming to it.
The xbox is just noisy and hot, i couldn't count how many peoples rrod's i've had to fix in the past year.

as a sony fanboy, i don't mind that the 360 outsells the ps3. that's just that many more people who are not me who will have to go through the pains of using crappy hardware.
