Activision explains DJ Hero pricing, says game offers 'tremendous value'
(click to Afrika Bambaataa-size)
The retailer pricing of DJ Hero found recently -- $120 bucks! -- has some folks wondering why Activision may have upped the price for its usual game-plus-peripheral combo. The company has offered an
...
Sorry, we nodded off there for a minute. Between the $250 for The Beatles: Rock Band and another $120 for Tony Hawk: Ride, we're up late a lot, worrying about affording all these plastic game controllers -- and a bigger house to put them all in.

I'll just wait then until I can find the bundle for cheaper.
If this is anything like guitar hero the price will go down quite fast.
Just look at all the Worl Tour Bundles.
Kinsey @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:11PM
I'm just gonna wait till I can find the game at a Liquidation store for 30 bucks just like Guitar Hero Aerosmith.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:54AM
I'm just amused that the company that raised their prices across the board on this stuff (GH5 was going to be $120 with controller last I heard) is the same company on Sonys ass about dropping theirs.
SonyHomie (PSN: superballa123) @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:07PM
So sad but true.
rowd149 @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:09PM
Amusing, but it makes sense. "Hey, hey, sell your bread for less money so I can legitimately charge more for my lunch meat!" (pssst, guys, it's a metaphor)
Ryan @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:12PM
Well d'uh. How are you supposed to afford their games if you have to spend the extra cash on the console?
Voshempa @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:15PM
You, my friend, deserve a medal.
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:16PM
good point. acti is gonna go down hard if they keep making games with peripherals that market for high prices. what's next, modern warfare 2 with M16 peripheral?
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:58PM
*modern warfare 3
ssuk @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:36PM
Don't give them ideas, Sly. You know they really would do something like that...
atx1980 @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:55AM
stupid game!
SonyHomie (PSN: superballa123) @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:05PM
So guitar hero 1,2, and 3 were cool. But once DJ Hero comes out it's stupid. That was a stupid comment.
j.howlett @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:47PM
except for games like amplitude and maybe the drum i think all the fake guitar things are a little stupid. this turntable is stupid with the buttons on it. if the other turntable from the other game can be used outside the game i might get it
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:50PM
+1 for remembering Amplitude....
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:13PM
j.howlett, the game informer article about the scratch controller said it can be used outside the game.
milan @ Jul 3rd 2009 8:34PM
It's not about the games, its about the companies abilities to make more money by selling extra plastic. Nintendo is also good at doing this.
Nook @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:55AM
Dear Activision,
You've beat it to death brah. I'm not buying anymore of your 'Hero' products.
Stop raping the consumer.
More bells for your competition!
Nook
korwyn @ Jul 3rd 2009 8:16PM
glad to know that I'm not the only one feeling this way. no more "hero" series. for me.
starscreamyo @ Jul 4th 2009 3:58AM
Yeah, but you and everybody else will probably go out and buy the next Call of Duty game so what does activision care. I am on a personal full Activision boycott.
TrumpetDan @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:57AM
Wait... $250 bucks for The Beatles: Rock Band? Seriously? I must've missed that important tidbit in previous articles. Ouch. :(
Looks like I'll end up having to wait a year for a 2010 Black Friday sale on that one then...
modok @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:30PM
if you value your life, don't go to a Long Island Walmart that day my friend...savages.
brad77 @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:25PM
That's for the "Limited Edition Premium Bundle" which, according to Amazon, contains the game (duh), the bass controller, drums, microphone, microphone stand, and "special content" (whatever that is).
You can get the game for $60. The two guitar models are sold separately for around $100. I don't know if you can get the bass separately.
DjDATZ @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:59AM
Tremendous value my ass. When your DLC doesn't transfer over from game to game like RB's, then there IS NOT TREMENDOUS VALUE.
That is all.
Zack11190 @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:02PM
World Tour DLC is transferable to GH5 and so will the songs on the disc. So I don't know wtf you're complaining about.
DjDATZ @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:24PM
Ummm...ALL THE PREVIOUS DLC. Guitar Hero 5 isn't even out. That's "wtf" I'm complaining about.
Either way, I suck at rhythm games so this doesn't concern me either. It's Activision milking gamers that pisses me off.
Zack11190 @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:32PM
Well, the previous Guitar Heroes don't even have vocal or drum tracks. So it's understandable to why they aren't transferable to World Tour.
WINterfang @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:32PM
I agree with you but Zack has a point though.
brad77 @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:28PM
I'm pickin' up what your puttin' down, but it would be retarded to play GH tracks on a turntable. Maybe if you were doing mashups or something, which, come to think of it would still be lame.
JoeTheBlow @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:03PM
The Activision Economic Stimulus plan.
1: Try and convince consumers to take out loans/remortgage their house, in order to pack that house with more plastic junk.
2: User defaults on repayment.
3: Activision own house, and plastic junk contained therein.
4. PROFIT!
lawlersauce @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:22PM
you skipped step 3.5 with the all important ???
DjDATZ @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:24PM
There needs to be no ??? step. This is a foolproof plan.
rowd149 @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:06PM
Actually, it's probably because WiiFit's success has shown them they can get away with it. :/
Jack_Jackington @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:12PM
$120 still isn't justified.
$250 for The Beatles: Rock Band?! I can buy a PSP Go with that kinda money
Trippy Haps @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:53PM
$250 for the PSP Go??!! I can go buy a Wii with that kind of money!
Ryan @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:17PM
The next "Hero" Games to have tremendous value:
1) Sperm Bank Hero
2) Funeral Home Hero
3) Stock Market Hero
4) Tax Collector Hero
5) Repo Man Hero
6) No More Heroes Hero
Maulok @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:21PM
They should mark the box like Mad Magazine
"12000 cents (cheap!!)"
charlie b. @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:25PM
i lol'd
SoshiKitai @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:50PM
Y'know Charlie, with that avatar on, all your comments look like they're being shouted with a frightened hoarse voice.
...which is awesome.
chillski @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:23PM
they dropped the ball on this one... do they really think consumers have this much money to blow on a video game there not even sure if they will like?
Kyle Nichol @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:30PM
£108 is not 'tremendous value', it's 'wallet-raping sad'. Though retailers are taking a supposed loss by selling DJ Hero at £99, the demographic it's aimed at won't be willing to spend too much on a virtual turntable.
blackric @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:34PM
Just wait it out, these bundles will be stockpiled at your local WalMart, etc until they have to be sold at half price or more like previous GH bundles.
I dunno about you but seeing all these unsold boxes on retail shelves are an eyesore.
Kris @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:20PM
I would rather pay 250 dollars than ever have to play this stupid ass game
uncle jesse @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:39PM
I don't see Tony Hawk: Ride selling very well. Dj Hero might do okay, it seems like people are waiting for reviews first as most are on the fence with it.
Are they releasing The Beatles only in a bundle or can you just buy the game? If you can just buy the game alone, it will sell big time. If it's only available in the bundle, it might get off to a pretty slow start considering the price is a little much and a lot of people already have 3 or 4 guitars and 2 drumsets. As cool as the new instruments are, I really just want the game. My regular RB gear is fine by me.
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:00PM
you can buy the beatles alone.
Demosthenes @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:43PM
Wait, what is...wtf, thats all this game can receive, just wtf
SaltyGary @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:00PM
Is it just me or is this thing going to be an utter failure. Maybe I'm just told old but it seems like such a niche game.
lawlersauce @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:25PM
very niche, the hiphop culture and video game culture aren't too commonly shared
SaltyGary @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:31PM
You sarcasm doesn't really hold an weight. For people that like Rock music there is a connection to the guitar and people wanting to play it. I would think folks into hiphop would rather have something like singstar where they can rap as opposed as being the dj. The dj is in the background and most don't get close to the recognition as a lead guitarist would.
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:01PM
i doubt he was being sarcastic...
JewUnit666 @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:25PM
with those prices Activision cant figure out why ps3 owners arent buying as much of their products when there are plenty of other ps3 games that are much much much cheaper, hey maybe if they made games with much better graphics on ps3 because WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY maybe more people would start accepting the higher prices (like think of modern warfare 2 with graphics as good as killzone 2 ect, it would be amazing instead they kinda look cartoony in a standpoint to killzone2) Activision's CEO is kind of a dumbass too i think microsoft is his secret lover
