Interview: Valve's Doug Lombardi

Valve's PR overlord, Doug Lombardi, answered our burning Left 4 Dead 2 questions at a recent event in London. We discuss PS3 development, the new cast and clarify some of the game's features, so read on.
Laughs. Stay tuned! No news on that today.
Worth a try! What's the real deal with PS3 development? At the end of last year you seemed quite up on the idea and then nothing since then.
We're still up on the idea. The thing that we've come to the conclusion on is that we've got to get some PS3 developers at Valve. We always look at everything as if we were customers of our products -- what would we want and what would we expect? If you look at The Orange Box -- PC: 96 on Metacritic, 360: 96 on Metacritic, PS3 like... 84 or something. And then you look at Left 4 Dead, I think it was 89 or 90 on both platforms.
Continued after the break.
Getting The Orange Box out was the first time we simultaneously shipped multiplatform. We had always shipped later and it was always handled by someone else, with the exception of Half Life 2. So we finally got to a simultaneous release with The Orange Box and with Left 4 Dead we got to a simultaneous release, same Metacritic scores just like The Orange Box, but then we were one step further and supporting the game with DLC on both platforms for the same price, which in this case was free with the survival pack. So, cool, we're simultaneous and now we're treating the 360 guys with first class respect not only at launch, but also post-launch.
"We have to get people under our roof who are dedicated, talented PS3 guys and then all bets are off."
|

Valve is always looking to hire people. So yeah, definitely.
Onto Left 4 Dead 2 specific stuff. Will you be offering Left 4 Dead 1 levels as DLC or installable from the disc for Left 4 Dead 2?
That's something that we're looking at right now. How to marry those communities and how to piece those things together. We've made it so that with the mod tools, if you're making stuff for Left 4 Dead right now, with very little work you'll be able to get it up and running in Left 4 Dead 2 and it's a matter of how all that interfaces and there are a lot of details that we still need to work out. But it's definitely a goal of ours to have cross-operability for those who own both games.
"It's definitely a goal of ours to have cross-operability for those who own both games." |
Well that's really a big part of it, that's stuff we're still really working out and we're not prepared to disclose just yet. We understand that the best possible scenario is to keep everyone together in the same community and treat it as a platform, as you say.
What brought about the incendiary ammo?
I don't know who came up with that originally, but I think it's a great addition to the game and I think the Hazmat zombie who's immune to it is just an awesome counter to that. What's great about Valve is that everyone's equal. It's a flat organization and everyone has an equal say in the design process. There isn't just one guy who hands you the design document and says "go make that."
What you get for that is that every time somebody comes up with an idea, someone acts as the evil genius and comes up with the counter for it. I loved how those two things came out -- I get to be a customer of it a little bit as the marketing guy. You know, I'll play the demo and I'll be like "oh cool, incendiary ammo" and then the next time I play I'll see this Hazmat guy and I'll try to shoot him and it doesn't work, and I'm like "that's awesome!" For every yin there's a yang for what goes into the game.

The original survivors were incredibly memorable and beloved by fans. What made you decide on having a new cast and do you think they'll be as memorable?
We decided on the new cast for a couple of reasons. I hope they'll be as memorable as the first ones and I think they have the potential to be more appealing. The reason for using a new cast was multi-fold. We wanted to bring the story on a bigger scale. The things that are happening, all the shit that is hitting the fan and turning everyone into mutant zombies, has gone much bigger than just Pennsylvania, which is where the original game was loosely set.
So we wanted to say it's on a grander scale. Other people are being affected in other parts of the world, or other parts of the country in this game's case. We also have the ability to deliver different stories with these other people. There are a lot of reasons to keep the original ones, but for every reason there's baggage. Okay, what else does Francis hate? Baggage. How do Zoey and co. find themselves in Georgia from Pennsylvania? Baggage.
So you have this clean slate with new characters. It also allows us to say "meanwhile, while this is happening to these people, this is happening to these other people." So it's a group of trade offs and starting with the blank canvas lent itself better to the other ideas in the game.
"The Hunter showing up in a hoodie in New Orleans doesn't make sense, because it's always hot as hell there." |
It's a fun idea to play with for something in the future, for sure.
So apart from the Witch walking around a bit now, are the special infected's behaviors pretty much the same as the first game?
Yeah, the Witch is the only one who's had significant changes to her behavior. There are little smaller tweaks that are very subtle we've made to other things. The amount of time they show up now, because there are other bosses. That sort of thing. For the most part those guys were pretty solid designs. The Witch was a solid design, but we thought it would turn the volume up a bit if she's on the run.
There are also costume changes. The Hunter, for example, showing up in a hoodie in New Orleans doesn't make sense, because it's always hot as hell there.

When a player controls the Charger in Versus mode, will there be something in place to make them behave like Charger, like the Tank's patience meter?
(To Chet) Do you want to help with this?
The benefit there is that if you behave like a Charger, you get a hit and do damage. The Charger does this power up move and charges off and hits multiple people. It's about surprising people. The map we were showing today, the gauntlet level, is a good example of a map that's super great for with the Charger. But to counter that -- we didn't see anyone do it today, it's something you have to learn -- you can play the matador role. Taunt him out and then step back behind cover and he'll go flying off the bridge, for example.
That was Chet, by the way.
So will there be these finale levels for all the campaigns?
Yeah, absolutely. And then mini finales in the middle. There are at least three in the New Orleans campaign we're showing.
How many levels will there be in the game?
We're able to get more gameplay into a level now, because we've worked on the efficiency of the engine and stuff, so we keep changing the number of levels, but the goal is for each of the campaigns to be the same amount of game time as the originals, if not a little longer. And there'll be five of them versus the four that were in the first.
And this will a full price game?
Yeah, full price. Full sequel. Bigger than the original.

Siiiigh. This boycott is getting harder and harder to follow through with.
JayVe @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:42PM
Wait... you are boycotting Valve because they won't release shitty PS3 ports, and demand a high level of quality from their game?
Boy oh boy... that is sending them the WRONG message. You should *reward* companies that are willing to stand by the quality of their work instead of whoring it out to 3rd-party port-shops in order to make a quick buck.
Your boycott is misplaced.
samik @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:50PM
Well, the boycott isnt going to do anything because a lot of people are going to vote with their wallets, buy this game and essentially tell Valve its ok to come out with a short and practically multiplayer -only game, and then come out with a "sequel" within one year, then charge full price for that as well.
And worse still after Naughty Dog slog thier butts off on a game like Uncharted 2, its will get a 6/10 from Edge which will then grant a 9/10 to L4D2.
Michelobius @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:33PM
I thought the boycott was also in response to the lack of HL2:E3, for which people have been waiting forever, and L4D2 highlights significantly.
Nothing to do with the PS3. I totally understand why they did what they did as a PS3 owner, and I hope it's not just talk to make us think they don't hate the platform. I suspect we'll see more Valve releases on PS3 in the future.
Vandell @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:37PM
Quoting from the steam group now:
"-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 as a stand-alone sequel will split the communities and decrease the quality of multiplayer gaming.
-The announced content of Left 4 Dead 2 does not warrant a stand-alone, full-priced sequel and should instead become updates (free or otherwise) for Left 4 Dead.
-Left 4 Dead has not yet received the support and content which Valve has repeatedly stated will be delivered.
-The release of Left 4 Dead 2 will make Left 4 Dead an obsolete purchase and inferior piece of software after only one year since release."
That's the jist of the boycott, really.
avan @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:04PM
LMAO boycott.... go boycott square enix, activision, sony or ea not ppl who respect you as a consumer
GoldN @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:21PM
@JayVe
You're implying that the boycott is over the fact that they haven't been giving enough attention to the PS3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the boycott over the fact that Left 4 Dead 2 is being released so close to the first and is therefor turning the series into a franchise rather than a platform?
JayVe @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:35PM
@GoldN
Not trying to imply anything. I was seriously asking. :D
Ryan Strand @ Jul 3rd 2009 6:27PM
I agree that LFD2 came quick and doesn't seem full price worthy, but Valve is the last company that should be boycotted. They are probably the #1 most ethical and customer loyal developer and publisher out there. There is a reason HL episodes take too long; because they care more about making a quality game than hitting a holiday deadline. We get the better game, period.
Saria the Cat @ Jul 6th 2009 5:42PM
It's funny, people always complain about newer installments taking too long to come out, but when a sequel is released speedily, it's all about "consumer rape."
I just bought L4D a month ago so I should be even angrier but if Valve delivers, as I know it will, I will be happy buying a sequel so soon. If this was any other company or circumstance, I might be up in arms about it, but this is Valve.
ZaxCG2 @ Jul 7th 2009 1:09AM
@Ryan:
YES. Completely agree.
I don't get why the crap everyone is worried too... I'm totally stoked for a new Left 4 Dead.
I've had faith that Valve would take care of their fans from the start, and from all the news they're releasing about the game- I'd say we're going to look back at the "boycotters" and laugh. Seeing as how well they treat us fans, I would imagine Left 4 Dead 1 going down in price around the launch of the 2nd - or have one of those deals where you could get both for a low price.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:40PM
I'm going to buy this for PC I had a horrible experience with the x360 version of left 4 dead.
The Quick match option always drag me to some lagtastic matches or games where everybody boots each other for no f***ing reason, same happened in Castle crashers.People If you want to do a private party use the private option you retards.
stephen @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:45PM
Usually it's because team A is 3-4 people who know each other and you've just ran off or gone and startled a witch. My team do it every time a random does something stupid.
L4D2 needs matchmaking, but not the kind on GOW or Halo3, I mean matchmaking that actually matches you up with people of your skill not 5 star generals and lvl 50's.
Vandell @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:47PM
Rule of thumb: always buy the PC version of Valve games.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:49PM
The problem is that these games are meant to be played with friends. You're kidding yourself if you think you'll have better luck with random people on the notoriously tight-knit PC front. Go with the PC version if you want the mods or if you prefer KB/Mouse controls, not for a better selection of randoms.
Tony Montana @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:53PM
The PC version is defintely superior in that respect.
Valves gaming fans on the PC and most Steam users present a pretty closely knit community which gives you a higher chance of matching up with somebody that is skilled and mature.
I tried playing Left 4 Dead on Live and there was a lot of swearing, racism and tomfoolery.
Steam gave me a superior experience as I ran into a lot of ex-Counter Strike guys who were pretty good players and they were generally polite and didn't go off on their own little journeys.
I think the Steam community lends a lot of credence to Left 4 Dead because some of the maturer Counter Strike community dropping into Valves other games makes it a much more pleasant experience.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:35PM
I'm always the best player,I'm the only one who revives other players and I have never scared the witch that's the job of some random prick.
That's what pisses me off,if I was bad well okay I suck boot me but since I'm actually good (I have saved the asses of my team mates countless times) what the hell?
If you want to play a private match make an invite only game so you don't waste my time appearing in the quick match list.
I did have friends that played this game but all of them did it do to get the achievements, they boost the hell out of the game the first week and never played it again.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:37PM
*but all of them play it to get the
Saria the Cat @ Jul 6th 2009 5:45PM
I always had problems with randoms, too. Esp. since people never use the freaking headsets and so they can't explain why they're off in some corner jerking off while a horde approaches.
However, my biggest beef is getting TK'd every single quickmatch game until finally I found a guy who kept sticking with me throughout games and wasn't a douche. I heart him.
ZaxCG2 @ Jul 7th 2009 1:17AM
Yeah haha, the same crap goes down on PC. It may be even worse because of the clan-whores... 4 clan members meeting up as humans and slaughter the crap out of you. They think they're real special because they're killing a bunch of pubs with no mics.
Holy hell... this is going to be even worse on L4D2... I can feel it.
Better find your other 3 friends now.
Jacksons @ Jul 15th 2009 9:28PM
"Rule of thumb: always buy the PC version of Valve games."
This. One hundred times over. Do not buy a valve product on anything but PC if you actually want an ever-expanding, always popular product.
Though honestly, I've always been lukewarm toward console online multiplayer. If it isn't a super popular mainstream title, you're not finding anyone online after the first week after the game's release.
Mazer @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:58PM
Can't wait t o hear about other special infected!!!
Cj @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:47PM
Hmm. At daytime the graphics seem a bit lacking. It wont affect this awesome game but still. Hope itll look nicer than L4D1 (On the 360 at least)
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:50PM
Can't quite tell if they are in New Orleans or City 17 in all these day time screens.
Geist @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:51PM
It uses the Source engine, which is dated as all hell, so I wouldn't expect much. Still, this means that it can have dozens of zombies on-screen at once without any real hiccups.
Cj @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:51PM
is it me or does this look less in quality than Episode 2? Ep 2 looked better imo.
devilsei @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:56PM
maybe City 17 is in New Orleans?
Jelster @ Jul 3rd 2009 9:30PM
@Geist
Source engine is updated for every game Valve produces (and in many cases is backwardly compatible with older games). Your statement is equal to saying the Call of Duty is on a date Quake 3 engine. Valve just doesn't seem to want to iterate it's engine modifications like id or Epic do.
Regarding graphics in L4D2 I prefer they use more resources to apply variety in the infected and keep a lot going on with a solid frame rate. If you're studying wall textures you deserve to get your arse eaten!
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jul 6th 2009 3:04PM
@ gobo
Is there a difference?
Tony Montana @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:53PM
I for one will not be buying this game because Valve have betrayed their fans by releasing a game so soon...
lmfao. more news please I cant wait for this game.
Kleptomaniac @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:55PM
I don't see why people want left 4 dead ported to the ps3.
Left 4 dead is simply meant to be played on a PC end of. The game doesn't work very well on the 360.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:59PM
Except for the fact that it works very well on a 360. If all you care about is the core game experience and are as comfortable with a dual analog controllers as you are a KB/Mouse... It really doesn't matter what version you get. A PS3 version would be most welcome.
End of... what exactly?
Kleptomaniac @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:11PM
Have you played the PC version? I don't know i'm usually pretty comfortable with dual analog controls as i'm a mainly console gamer but when I played left 4 dead on the 360 it did not feel right at all.
Oh sorry "end of" is just a phrase. Its means like end of discussion.
Damian @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:23PM
I am tired of PC Elitists thinking it is unplayable on anything other than PC,dual analog works just fine.
Kleptomaniac @ Jul 3rd 2009 6:02PM
@Damian
Obviously you can't read! I said i'm mainly a console gamer!
Foetoid @ Jul 3rd 2009 7:22PM
Dual-Analog may work "fine", but it's still far inferior to Wiimote/Nunchuck and Keyboard/Mouse.
WiredKnight @ Jul 3rd 2009 7:28PM
I agree that the PC version is superior, both in interface and visual quality, but the console version can be just as fun *especially* because of split-screen support, which very few PC games offer.
So if you're mostly playing a PC version online, everything's good. But if you have a friend come over, you wouldn't be able to play together, unless (!) you had a console version.
Of course, the best case scenario is LAN play!
Heyyou27 @ Jul 3rd 2009 8:59PM
@ WiredKnight
The PC version of Left 4 Dead supports split-screen via a console command. The second player has to use an Xbox 360 controller, but the game looks and runs better on the PC in Split-screen than it does on the 360 version. Also, I can run it in REAL 1080p with 4xAA on my HDTV.
Jelster @ Jul 3rd 2009 9:41PM
You're spot on, not sure why you got voted down. Doesn't mean the 360 game is not enjoyable or worth a purchase but when L4D2 comes around it'll be on my PC way before my 360.
Console only gamers really need to get over themselves and stop being so defensive about the obvious deficiencies of their platform of choice. There are HUGE benefits to gaming on consoles but please ease off the kool-aid and acting like your shit don't stink.
TRON.dll @ Jul 6th 2009 4:45PM
What about the people who don't have a very good computer or a 360? How will they play it if all they have is a PS3?
Saria the Cat @ Jul 6th 2009 5:55PM
@Klepto: Not everyone has the option of playing on a gaming PC, or even a 360, hence PS3 players wanting a little in on the action. For the rest, I understand you're just stating your personal, reasonable preference, so I don't know why you were voted down.
@Jelster: Yeah, why would people get defensive when they're told their platforms of choice have "obvious deficiencies," anyway? That's like saying Mexicans need to get over being called beaners.
Omega2k3 @ Jul 7th 2009 6:59PM
It's more like telling someone with a mechanical mouse to stop saying that it's better than an optical because they find it 'just as easy to control'.
Kleptomaniac @ Jul 8th 2009 8:21AM
Yikes I did get quite the downvote didn't I!
Em yeah I do see the points about not having a PC/360 to play it on. Never really thought about it that way. Thanks to those who replied positively.
Ghostbuddy @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:55PM
Single best sentence im going to read all week.
"So we look out further and say "now we have to get the good or popular mods to the console guys," then there'll be complete parity between the PC and console. "
aridic @ Jul 23rd 2009 10:58PM
I personally am a PS3 gamer, and when I see Left for Dead I wonder why hasn't it came to the PS3, or why not plan it. Or why sit here and give PS3 ports that obviously are worse than the original. But then again, I never see any complaints as to why Xbox's other legendary games haven't ported yet, such as Gears, Halo, and even Fable.
It is because companies like to stick to what they know. Valve started on Xbox, and I see why they stay on Xbox. just like Guerrilla started on Playstation.
But as I mention Guerrilla, it also brings into mind that they thought the PS3 was easy, to format for. So why give crap ports, or at least not try to port.
Now this would be different if it were like the Fallout 3 DLC situation, if L4D was out on both systems, then they come out with L4D2 and say only the Xbox gets it.
Now, for some reason I think my post sound idiotic, and probably does. But I wish L4D was on the PS3, but all the while I understand why Valve doesn't move it.
But as for the sequel, It could be released as an expansion pack, and DLC. But then again, who doesn't want to pocket a few extra dollars, no matter how pure or loyal?
sony boy @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:19PM
it should be 40 bucks, valve. cmon, valve, it's basically L4D with a few new maps, characters and slight improvements.
Damian @ Jul 3rd 2009 5:25PM
Are you thick?
It is a sequel, it isnt going to re-invent the wheel, its just going to add some more spokes, hold on i am getting lost in this metaphor.
The point is you just described a sequel, rainbow six vegas 2 didnt add THAT much to the first, but i still loved it.
Amoveo @ Jul 3rd 2009 8:07PM
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 was a perfect example of an expansion pack that was sold as a sequel. It wasn't a new game, it should have been a standalone expansion and on PC it should have incorporated the original into it. Unless you change the game you shouldn't claim its a sequel and charge full price.
Russ @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:22PM
I read (and there's a dedicated website to it) that the "boycott" is because people feel that they're releasing this game too soon after part 1 and that this could just be an expansion pack and that they should be focusing on the Half-Life series.
That was a long sentence.
JayVe @ Jul 3rd 2009 8:31PM
Foetoid is right. I can play on dual-analog, but Wiimote/Nunchuck or Keyboard/Mouse is far superior for aiming.
