Military gets its own gaming network, the MOG
Though you might think they'd welcome a break from shoot-'em-ups, members of the military are known to be a rich breeding ground for hardcore gamers. Now, just in time for Independence Day, they have their very own space in which to catch each other in the friendliest of fire: The Military Online Gaming program, a Global Gaming League-powered service that kicks off on the 4th with a Call of Duty: World at War tournament.
Though support will start with the 360, a rep from the group responsible, Pro vs. GI Joe, told Shacknews that our fighting men and women will soon be able to blast one another on PC and PS3 too.

Why not? Playing video games is a really good way to de-stress. While playing these games the girls and guys from our troops can get some frustration out, relax, have fun and unwind and build some friendships outside of their daily duties.

Actually, I didnt even read the article. So I guess your right.
ssuk @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:01AM
How about reading the damn article before commenting next time then? This is as bad as a "First" comment.
Obie @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:18PM
De-stress? Not on Veteran difficulty it's not. :p
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:20PM

There Has Been a community for military active and vetreans of the US armed forces since 2007 called militarygaming.net.
Mazrael @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:21AM
Hopefully 'Friendly Fire' safety is on then... Maybe they're bitter that it was the Russians that really won the war...
spedione @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:02AM
I'd like to join in just to see how fast I'd die.
derek @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:41AM
I think this is a good idea. I think it would also be cool if they allowed family members to play with their soldier brothers, sisters, fathers, etc. Remember, a family that kills together stays together:)
ZombiesRPplsToo @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:49PM
Actually it's, "A family that slays together, stays together."
TroubleMaker @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:44AM
I still keep searching for DSG! Damn you Joystiq!

Is it bad that the first thing I thought of when I saw this headline was the word "Kupo"?
Heavytoka @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:53AM
This is great news!
msmith9292_8 @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:59AM
"No one fights alone!"/"Stick together, we'll come out on top!"-At start of Team Deathmatch.
"Kick ass, Marines."-At the start of a match.
"Those sons-of-bitches really put a hurtin' on us!"/"Alotta good men died here today. All for nothing!"-At a match loss.
"Outstanding Marines! Outfuckingstanding! We kicked ass!"/"Nice work Marines! Scratch one up for us!" after a match win.
"Fire at will."/"Shoot anything that moves."-At the start of Free-for-All.]
"Don't let up! We almost got 'em!"/"WE AIN'T READY TO QUIT!"/"If were going down, were going down fighting!" - near the end of a match
MystileArmor @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:07AM
What point were you trying to get across?
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:20PM
that world at war has awesome voice overs. like the red army.
"They come for our blood, but drown in their own!" - After winning
"Beaten and bloody, we live to fight another day!" - After losing
Viglin @ Jul 3rd 2009 10:59AM
To the first poster, and your follow up.....no words .
And this is a great idea, it may seem minor to those that have never served, but trust me...anything that gives you a release from what you have to go thru, and a connection to the outside world...is a vast relief.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:02AM
Is this like a social networking portal where you connect with other military personnel to set up online games, or is it an actual military specific Xbox LIVE / PlayStation Network connection?
Joost Schuur @ Jul 6th 2009 12:46PM
From what I can tell, it's a social network/ladder system built without Microsoft or Sony's involvement that uses the regular online services of the platform.
The word 'network' is a bit of a misnomer. You're not playing on a separate online service, although ladder matches seem to be private games between people who challenge each other via the GGL's ladder system as opposed to find each other through regular built-in matchmaking.
Sidebuster @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:03AM
Once I was playing CoD4 on a server where it was ran by serious military types who only wanted to play the game as if for real with formations and stuff. I remember one guy accidently team killed one other guy and he was all distressed about it and said it was because he had lost friends when he was in Iraq.
Then I got banned for kicking ass. Never been back since. I would feel bad for that guy if I didn't keep getting kicked/banned for reasons I didn't know. Probably for not having a mic. But I digress.
Chan @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:06AM
Another way to waste away tax payer money, better be a really nice damn server.
MystileArmor @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:09AM
Another way to waste oxygen.
Neorev @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:13AM
I'd rather have my tax money spent on this, rather than bailing out worthless companies that can't handle their own finances.
Xero @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:18AM
as a member of the armed forces, im sure i speak for many of us when i say STFU. There are so many other things out there that are "wastes of taxpayer money". take a look at the giant check that California had to pay the ESA for frivolous lawsuits. Since California is taking handouts from the Federal Government, the bill actually fell on all of us. at least THIS "waste" helps the men and women that actually allow you to sit safely behind your computer screen and make pass judgement on things that affect them. Suicides in the military are at an all time high. A little morale boosting, even in the form of a video game, is always welcome. Write your congressman if you have a problem with them taking care of YOUR troops, though I imagine they would probably write back and tell you to shove it.
To everyone else. sorry if i sound a little troll-like. i have friends in the desert that work 16 hours a day, 6 days a week in 120 degree heat. the only entertainment out there on their 1 day off is a game room with Xbox 360s hooked up to the internet and soon THIS network. if you think that this is a "waste of money", I don't know what else to say.
Chan @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:42PM
@Xero, seriously you are stupid, first I also have friends in the military and they get play atleast once a week they said, further more I said "it better be a good server" (this is if one is set up", also THEY signed up to the military and new what they were doing. FURTHERMORE it is not a server being setup I only meant if there was to be one, what is being set up is a GAMING LEAGUE for the military where only ppl in the military can join and it is all sponsored and powered by the GGL so yea read and understand the topic before posting your retarded comments.
Sly @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:22PM
chan, you sound a lot more retarded than xero.
Xero @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:26PM
Chan, did I say that military members can't play once a week? No. I stated that in the desert, that ONE DAY is sometimes the only highlight of a week. yes we signed up. thanks for reminding me. for a second there I thought I was drafted. oh wait.
and if all you were saying was that the gaming league was SPONSORED BY THE GGL, why the hell would you think it was a waste of taxpayer dollars? how about you do your own homework before trying to backtrack on your BS.
Don't BS a BSer! Next time you wanna BS, try BS'ing each other, see how that feels. Im BS proof.
lawlersauce @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:34PM
He makes sense, actually.
What difference does it make if the military has its own server or has to play with civilians?
And Xero, look at it in a bigger picture - we shouldn't even have troops over in a fucking desert in the first place. Besides, it's a fucking video game...instead of giving a bandaid "fix" to help occupy and distract, we should be spending money on exit strategies...
Xero @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:32PM
None of the troops that this really affects are in a position to decide where they are sent. Trust me, the general opinion is in agreement with you, regarding where we should and shouldn't be. But should troops be disregarded because they are following orders? And why wouldn't you want troops to play with other troops? It builds camaraderie between soldiers. Entirely necessary? no. Am I against it? no.
NoVA @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:17AM
As if the video game indoctrination hasn't had enough effect on them, might as well let them play so much it runs together with real life. That's been the plan since the beginning, dehumanize the enemy.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:21AM
Japan must be pretty pissed we didn't all go out and waste away on shrooms in '85 then.
Neorev @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:43AM
yeah exactly i've been stealing cars, shooting cops and running over hookers for.......just like in real.........o wait nm that didn't really happen.
lawlersauce @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:39PM
Good point NoVA
gobo, Neorev - he's pointing out that it may not be healthy, psychologically, to turn what soldiers have to deal with every day into a game to them...it is not a game at all and all that more of this type of video game can really do to the psyche is make military life seem more unreal than it already is
Commando62 @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:04PM
OR...
It's just a video game...
that relieves stress....
Kyera @ Jul 3rd 2009 11:58AM
I have to be honest, I'd be interested in seeing a top clan on MOG take on a top clan on...
Is it CPL? I think it was CPL but I haven't played a shooter "competitively" in about six years.
Anyway, it'd be interesting seeing a top clan here take on a top clan there in a team-based shooter to see which side prevails in the e-arena.
ZombiesRPplsToo @ Jul 3rd 2009 12:52PM
Thanks for that.

Koreans and chinese will be so pissed... The FPS junkies, I mean, not the governments :P
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 3rd 2009 1:36PM
Not sure I understand it, is it like a military MLG or a military provided XBL?
Daniel @ Jul 3rd 2009 2:02PM
Why call themselves "military online gaming program"?
They could have called themselves the "ministry of gaming" "MoG" because it's quite close to "MoD" which is the ministry of defence which deals with all of the military in the UK.
nakedatthecomp @ Jul 3rd 2009 3:36PM
"Hi, I'm a MOG. Half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend."
Brice @ Jul 3rd 2009 4:45PM
Yeah it's a little weird when you think about it, but hey the military is a place where we sanction killing of others!!! Of course it's going to be weird! But it's also a part of our lives. We have to have them. Maybe one day we will not be so screwed up and have to even bother defending ourselves, but that day is not now. Let these men and women have something to help them with their job.I don't want to pretend I know what it's like to be in the military. I can make all kinds of comments about, but all I really know is I couldn't imagine doing what they do as I'm not brave enough.
jm_carrillo @ Jul 6th 2009 8:25PM
lol the us army playing on xbl while somewhere 2 miles away the taliban are defeating bowser on their nes and listening to just released 80's music :P

if tax payer dollars are going to gaming, i am all in.
Hector Lopez @ Jul 5th 2009 2:25AM
i cant imagine being trained to eliminate the enemy and do it without them infliciting any harm on your squad, yet to play foolishly in call of duty and go 17-23 in team deathmatch, that would really piss me offand would actually worry me even more. I guess what I am saying is that Call of Duty is a headache and would frustrate the player even more and that killing in a video game isnt what i would choose to take a day off killing, maybe something like racing or sports
