TMNT: Turtles in Time: Through the Ages: A Comparison Video
You know what the best thing about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time is? Throwing enemies into the screen. Thankfully, that feature is retained in the upcoming XBLA remake. The HD remake is obviously going to be a much prettier version of the original game -- but how good does it really look? The fine folks at GameVideos have made a stellar comparison video that highlights the sleek new look of this 2.5D remake. Watch all the way to the end to see how even the voice overs have -- for better or for worse -- changed.

Pretty much goes by the book.
Breakfastmachine @ Jul 4th 2009 5:15PM
The animations on the new one look really good, but I wish they would have kept the vibrant colors of the original. It looks kind of drab.
DNAtheHelix @ Jul 4th 2009 5:40PM
Yeah like it's all full of bloom and pastels. Ugh.
Westifire @ Jul 4th 2009 5:50PM
Yeah. They need more color. Other than that it looks great.
Hachibei @ Jul 4th 2009 9:01PM
What this game really needs is some TEXTURES. The turtles and enemies look like a bunch of early PS1 polygons with better anti-aliasing.
neoalec @ Jul 5th 2009 12:14AM
WTF? It has the SNES music? And why is the Ubisoft name on it?
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jul 5th 2009 1:40PM
TURTLE POWER!!!
Spartan @ Jul 4th 2009 5:08PM
It looks...
ok, actually.
I have very very fond memories of the original, so i'll take to this cautiously.
Mana37 @ Jul 4th 2009 6:33PM
Cautiously, indeed!
The mechanics are slower, they added a diagonal & vertical dimension, and the foot soldiers are no longer ruthless! They seem to carefully approach you... WTF!?
I would take the original arcade version instead, even though it's inferior to the SNES version!!!
[end rant]
Mana37 @ Jul 4th 2009 9:39PM
On closer observation: why are the foot letting out groans & moans?
They're fucking robots! Give Konami back the license!!!
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 5th 2009 12:05AM
That's pretty much my feeling, too. It looks alright, but I kept finding myself favoring the original. Maybe it's just the nostalgia doing the talking.
I also really hate the silly cartoon SFX in the new one. the art style is so...er...well, next-gen dark and serious that they seem really out of place and awkward. I suspect I'm going to cringe every time I hear them when I play it.
I want to see more still but I'll more than likely buy it, hoping for the best.
Spartan @ Jul 5th 2009 11:37AM
Im glad i took the safegaurd of searching for and buying an original copy of the game. (and the console to play it on)
Tyler @ Jul 4th 2009 5:09PM
That song is.....
epic
ZaxCG2 @ Jul 5th 2009 5:33PM
I know... its a shame I've never played the arcade version... only SNES. Hopefully the intro will make it in the final game.
djbuhhda @ Jul 4th 2009 5:09PM
i actually like the older one better, but then again i played through that game at least 15-20 times so i guess im tainted.
Sturat @ Jul 4th 2009 9:10PM
I don't know why they said "The HD remake is obviously going to be a much prettier version of the original game." The 3D graphics are clearly made to a lower standard than the original 2d artwork.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 4th 2009 5:15PM
Wow that actually looked pretty impressive in action, can't wait to get it whenever it comes out. It's been too long since I bought an XBLA.
In other news, RIP Steve "Air" Mcnair (former NFL quarterback and league MVP for the non sports people) Someone shot him in the head.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 4th 2009 5:16PM
Err, add a "game" at the end of that first part. No edit button FTL
MystileArmor @ Jul 4th 2009 6:47PM
WTF dude? McNair? Why?
Jezus what a fucked up month.
j.howlett @ Jul 4th 2009 5:17PM
i actually want them both
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 4th 2009 5:17PM
Looks like it lost its soul. Hopefully it contains the original in there somewhere, shame on them if it doesn't (and judging by the lack of a Konami logo, I'm guessing it isn't). I'm still mad BC: Rearmed didn't contain the original NES or Arcade game, but at least Rearmed was an improvement in every sense of the word. Whereas this looks like it will be a complete melee... Running around in 3D is a poor way to emulate the effortless plane switching on a 2D Beat 'em Up.
refinedsugar @ Jul 4th 2009 5:19PM
+1 for nostalgia. The updated look and animations aren't doing it for me.
OnToGloryReturns @ Jul 4th 2009 6:57PM
I think they'll have both - if recent trends are any indication. Defender, R-Type, and Missle Command among others all offer a choice of old school or the new.
Playes Streets of Rage 1 & 3 the other day for hours w/ a friend. The fun.
Snowblind @ Jul 4th 2009 5:23PM
The animations look great, and I don't mind the new graphics. But I've heard worrying things about the gameplay, it definitely seems different, but as long as it plays well, I don't mind if it's a little different.
I really don't understand why they took out the song, it was cheesy, but awesome. So yeah, I'm a little worried that these new developers just don't get it, and could end up completely messing this up.
Arrowned @ Jul 4th 2009 5:23PM
"Thankfully, that feature is retained in the upcoming XBLA remake."
It had BETTER been, or else how would we even defeat that first incarnation of Shredder?
joe @ Jul 4th 2009 5:42PM
That probably isn't going to matter because the remake is based on the the arcade version of the game. The first Shredder boss was only in the Super Nintendo version (as was that entire Technodrome level). I suppose it's possible that they might be doing a mix of the two games, but all the videos I've seen so far point to the arcade version.
Leroy_Octopus @ Jul 4th 2009 5:50PM
The better have it in. That's one of my all time favorite boss fights. Anyway my brother and I rented the SNES version at least 20 times, so I'm looking forward to this no matter what.
joe @ Jul 4th 2009 6:03PM
Believe me when I first heard this remake was happening, the first thing I though was "I hope it's based on the SNES version," because there are a lot of thing I think the SNES version had over the arcade such as a greater distinction between the turtles' effectiveness. Check the wiki if your interested to know the differences:

sony boy @ Jul 4th 2009 5:32PM
the new version looks to plasticy.
Jenks @ Jul 4th 2009 10:51PM
The old version looks too pixelly ;)
Markusdragon @ Jul 5th 2009 9:25AM
Both versions look too turtley.
pete @ Jul 5th 2009 2:00PM
i was thinking it looked almost too much like claymation...
Nebenator @ Jul 4th 2009 5:38PM
I actually like it, as long as the gameplay is the same.
Prox @ Jul 6th 2009 11:14AM
It's pretty darn close. I played the alpha build at one of the TMNT 25th Anniversary stops and really enjoyed it. One thing of note is that you are no longer limited to just attacking to the right or left. You have a full 360 degree range of attack now.
Metalhead looks a lot better in that video than in the build I played. It'll be cool to see what else has improved.
[tre] @ Jul 4th 2009 5:43PM
A TMNT game that's NOT related to the 4kids TV show of the same name?
Egad!
(Disclaimer: I did not start commenting until after this game was announced. I am also a 12-year-old. Thank you for your cooperation.)

Egad! You're a twelve year old. Right. I buy that for one dollar.

Dave @ Jul 4th 2009 9:38PM
(Disclaimer: This game is an XBLA remake of a much older TMNT videogame BEFORE the 4Kids TV bastardization of my beloved turtles. Not a BRAND NEW brand new TMNT game. Your cooperation isn't necessary.)
avan @ Jul 4th 2009 5:50PM
Damn too bad this is arcade only, im still not planing on trash money on somnthing i wont own just play, i luved the lighting effect
Leroy_Octopus @ Jul 4th 2009 6:10PM
I don't think you know how XBLA works.
False @ Jul 4th 2009 5:54PM
Seeing them both side-to-side like that actually makes me wish they had the option to play both styles: a "Remixed" and "Classic" option.
ignfan69 @ Jul 4th 2009 5:54PM
Metalhead looks way cooler in the original than in the new one. Doesn't look like the cartoon or the toy in the new one.
Corey @ Jul 4th 2009 6:12PM
completely agree, i distinctly remember having the toy, i still do actually, the shiny gold front shell, ugh, bummer the new one looks like a big grey blob
im not too happy about the changes ive seen so far
DarthDavid @ Jul 4th 2009 5:56PM
Not bad, I hope they give us the option to play classic vs remix........
DarthDavid @ Jul 4th 2009 5:57PM
Damn it False....you beat me to it!
Seroth @ Jul 4th 2009 5:56PM
They're using the SNES music! Awesome!
Shmil @ Jul 4th 2009 5:57PM
I dunno, I'm still hesitant to get it. I don't like the look of the new version and it looks to be a bit faster. Of course like the rest of you I'm extremely biased since i too grew up in the Turtles Time. This isn't a game that should have been re-made. Re-released with something to make look a bit cleaner on big tvs and online multiplayer would be awesome. Though i'm glad they seem to be keeping the music.
cafecito @ Jul 4th 2009 6:01PM
I insist.... I would've prefered a 2D HD graphical update ala SF2HDRemix instead of the polygonal models, but heck... I'm glad I'm getting to play the game once again. When does it release, BTW?
Snowblind @ Jul 4th 2009 6:02PM
July 22nd
