Dante's Inferno trailer features hellish gameplay footage
You're probably getting sick of our frequent comparisons between the God of War series and EA's upcoming poem-to-game conversion of Dante's Inferno. Well, GameTrailers recently got its hands on the first Infern-al gameplay footage to hit the internets, so now we invite you to make your own judgment on the two franchise's similarities. The video's posted after the break -- go ahead and watch it, we'll wait.

It looks like a carbon copy of GoW, but I'm sure, like with Dead space, there will be elements that differentiate it from the competition. The story should be pretty good too.
DiGiTAL SiN254 @ Jul 5th 2009 5:25PM
YOU GET TO TAME AND RIDE DEMONS!!!
I'm so on the Inferno bandwagon. On to Hell we goooooo
DiGiTAL SiN254 @ Jul 5th 2009 5:26PM
didn't mean to reply to you, but oh well you can come too. lol
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 5th 2009 7:16PM
"YOU GET TO TAME AND RIDE DEMONS!!!"
Yes we know. People aren't calling it a ripoff of god of war for no reason...
Nando @ Jul 5th 2009 7:25PM
THIS IS MADNESS!
Hue Jass @ Jul 5th 2009 8:16PM
Madness? THIS... IS... DANTES INFERNO!!!
Yi @ Jul 5th 2009 11:17PM
to be honest, i dont really care if a game is a ripoff of another or not. IF they're built good, then they are good and we the gamers can all win. GOW is a damn good game, if a ripoff can get at least 70% as enjoyable as GOW is, then i would be happy to play it.
Kdiggy @ Jul 6th 2009 9:28AM
I love God of War, it's one of my all time favorites. I'm digging the whole surreal, abstract setting of Infernal.
Gideon @ Jul 5th 2009 5:12PM
"God of War clone" or not, this game looks fantastic. Dead Space was one of the most polished games I've ever played and one of the best of 2008. I don't see why this can't be any different.
Damian @ Jul 5th 2009 6:42PM
Does this use the same engine as dead space?
Also, since i don't have a ps3, this should be a fun god of war substitute.
ArchiGamer @ Jul 5th 2009 5:11PM
I think my mind is still stuck in the Fourth of July, because I couldn't help but see that monster as a weird Statue of Liberty.
Hashbrown Hunter (OneGiantCluster.blogspot.com) @ Jul 5th 2009 6:24PM
Reminded me of Cloverfield a bit.
Hashbrown Hunter (OneGiantCluster.blogspot.com) @ Jul 7th 2009 12:45PM
Whoa why did I get downvoted?! Just saying that scene in the footage looked like that scene from Cloverfield.
Geez, sorry if I offended in anyway.
MattyMc13 @ Jul 5th 2009 5:16PM
Hello God of War, I love your new look. What did you do, a makeover?
Negative FPS @ Jul 5th 2009 5:17PM
EA.. terrible port incoming!!
>:(
GummyPC @ Jul 5th 2009 5:18PM
Should of made it a point-and-click adventure game to better follow the actual book but I guess that wouldn't sell to the casual audience.
David @ Jul 5th 2009 5:20PM
If that idea is what I think it is... then its terrible!
sony boy @ Jul 5th 2009 5:30PM
cause pointing and clicking on something is SOOOO FUN!!!
Llama_egg @ Jul 5th 2009 5:37PM
Grim Fandango would like to have a word with you.
Zac @ Jul 5th 2009 5:45PM
A point and click "adventure" is hardly a game you'd expect from EA.
It's obvious they cannot stay too "true" to the book. A subjective experience is always tainted for the masses. Take the movie translation of LoTR for example.
Alex @ Jul 5th 2009 6:04PM
Zac, I think that the LOTR films are excellent, as are the original books.
cuteSAVAGE @ Jul 5th 2009 6:19PM
I grew up on The Lord of the Rings books and I absolutely loved all three of Jackson's films (on there own they stand up incredibly well too). I think it was one of those rare cases in which such a celebrated story hasn't been butchered in its transition to another medium.
Of all the stories ever told, I think Alighieri's is the most open to interpretation, and I'm kind of glad they are pretty much making Artistic License: The Game. I really can't see any way of making Inferno into an enjoyable interactive experience without completely bending every written word. This game doesn't really appeal to me all that much, though I'm looking forward to trying it out.
cuteSAVAGE @ Jul 5th 2009 6:34PM
Let me rephrase: The gameplay doesn't really appeal to me, but I still plan on playing just for their take on the story.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 5th 2009 8:14PM
Actually, the game closely follows the original Inferno. It was the evil Rennaisance era Italian version of the FCC that forced Dante to censor his book because it scared the children. His original story was about how we went into Hell with a scythe and kicked all sorts of ass, instead he was forced to write a poem about him just walking through it on some sort of vacation.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jul 6th 2009 8:02AM
If you want something to follow the book, buy the fucking book. It's that simple. Because the book wouldn't make a fun game. Oh boohoo, they are using the name of the poem and themes.
Look at it from a different perspective. Action makes a fun game and at LEAST they are identifying the source material. Unlike the other projects of similar ideas. For example, how many retards out there now think War of the Worlds totally ripped off ID4?
Dyson @ Jul 5th 2009 5:19PM
Bitchin'.
j.howlett @ Jul 5th 2009 5:20PM
i've seen alot to like about it recently, but it still coming in 3rd behind god of war 3 and darksiders in my purchase order. it really depends how they handle the ps3 version gameplay wise and if they let people think it's terrible on ps3 because of a few differences.
xaos @ Jul 5th 2009 5:22PM
I thought it looked more Devil May Cry than God of War
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jul 5th 2009 5:28PM
when i first clicked on this link i thought i was guna be looking at castlevania i completely forgot what dantes inferno was.
derek @ Jul 5th 2009 5:24PM
If this is based on the book(even loosely) then it should be sweet. Anybody who hasn't read the book should because it's pretty good for classic literature.
ncxcstud @ Jul 5th 2009 6:11PM
It is all based off the Divine Comedy. Each 'stage' is a level of hell described in the poem.
Xa31nov1s @ Jul 5th 2009 5:24PM
I'd definitely go so far as to say that the art direction is much better than GoW's, there's definitely some really talented artists working on this game.
Overlord_Dave @ Jul 5th 2009 5:27PM
I'd love it the actual game contained that many Inferno quotes.
sony boy @ Jul 5th 2009 5:29PM
Wow, the similarities keep coming. You get to ride on big monsters, if you watched GTTV, the music sounds similar, and they load the next scene by making you fight monsters in a hallway, or a small dome... This is an exact copy of GOW3.
God Of War is What the 3d castlevainia on ps2 should've been.
Anthology @ Jul 5th 2009 6:11PM
"God Of War is What the 3d castlevainia on ps2 should've been."
No. God no.
Button mashing and quick-time events?
Castlevania?
Just no. Fuck you.
sony boy @ Jul 5th 2009 7:12PM
if you've seen the trailer of the new castlevania, it looks similar to god of war. god of war also had near perfect platforming and perfected how you use a hook. GOW also has a lot of blood, and so does castlevania. They all add up.
Anthology @ Jul 5th 2009 8:23PM
GOW invented blood, everyone!
I don't remember seeing any blood (or at least the over-the-top gore GOW has) in the LoS trailer.
sony boy @ Jul 5th 2009 9:12PM
no i'm talking about 2d castlevania like symphony of the night and bloodlines.
Doctor John Smith @ Jul 6th 2009 9:28AM
A GoW style 3D Castlevania would make me shed many tears.
A Metroid Prime Castlevania would make me jump for joy, since tons of exploration+ platforming+ action is much closer to castlevania than gore+ insane action
rapturousgamer @ Jul 5th 2009 8:46PM
I've never played GoW, so I can't comment on the similarities, but as someone who actually read The Divine Comedy in college I'm hoping this game really doesn't suck and does Dante some justice!
T @ Jul 5th 2009 5:50PM
Was that Tim Curry at the end? It sure sounded like him.
And oh noes it's a GoW clone? Oh well. I don't have a PS3 so I'm not going to playing GoW3 anytime soon.
Michael K. @ Jul 5th 2009 6:21PM
nobody is going to be playing GOW3 anytime soon,
Alex @ Jul 5th 2009 6:05PM
This looks a lot like Ninja Gaiden II, which was only good once.
I hope this has more replayability...
ncxcstud @ Jul 5th 2009 6:10PM
Dante's Inferno does look amazing. I saw the GametrailersTV on it this past Friday on Spike TV. Awesome. Too bad it doesn't come out till 2010.
Kamizar @ Jul 5th 2009 6:11PM
Extend-o-Scythe.
Jack Tretton @ Jul 5th 2009 6:16PM
At least 360-only gamers get a chance to play a possibly decent GoW knockoff.
And you can't go wrong with the source material, no matter how far off the path it deviates.
Xfire40 @ Jul 5th 2009 6:17PM
People bashing point and click adventures make me a sad gamer.
Jansperus @ Jul 5th 2009 6:17PM
The book's better.
mvp576 @ Jul 5th 2009 6:29PM
My friend told me in the book your escorted by an angel?
Why does he not have wings....
cuteSAVAGE @ Jul 5th 2009 6:30PM
The book is better than nearly every man-made bit of entertainment produced in the last 700 years, of course it will be better than the barely derived game.
