PSP Go's 480MHz state refers to USB, not CPU
FCC documents originally believed to have revealed that the PSP Go had a 480MHz processor -- over 40% more than the PSP (1000-3000) -- were actually talking about another part of the device ... the USB. Sony Computer Entertainment has stated that those extra megahertz are being used to clock the USB transfer and not the CPU.
So, other than the body and a slew of new accessories, it appears the PSP Go continues to be the same as its non-flipping cousin -- at least the processor won't put any extra drain on the handheld's batttery.

luulllzz!
This system just never stood a chance I swear.

It's sad really, you would think that when Sony saw the positive reaction from people thinking it had a 480MHz CPU they would maybe consider it. Now it's just a more expensive PSP with more expensive games that you can't resell. Awesome.
nukee @ Jul 6th 2009 9:42AM
Yeah, they're going to redesign the hardware about 2 months before it comes out.
Julian @ Jul 6th 2009 9:47AM
More Expensive games? seems to me that tere are very few psp download games that are above $30, where the normal price is $40, seems to me that they are cheaper, course these are older games so there is no way to be 100% sure
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 6th 2009 9:46AM
Yeah, they're going to release the same hardware for $100 more.
That sounds crazier to me then upgrading some hardware.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 6th 2009 10:03AM
I can't be 100% sure because I can't find any way to check the prices of the games, but I really doubt they are less than say Amazon where you can get Wipeout Pure for $3.50 and Ape Escape for $4.50.
The Baron @ Jul 6th 2009 10:07AM
Well, what would a faster CPU actually benefit the PSP Go?
It wouldn't improve the graphics - that's the GPU. You couldn't use it in games, because then they wouldn't work on the original PSPs.
Vidikron @ Jul 6th 2009 10:11AM
Used games are always going to be an advantage for physical media. But if you typically buy new then I don't really think the PSP Go has more expensive games.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 6th 2009 10:12AM
I'm sure some game developer out there could find a way to use a 40% speed boost. It wouldn't kill them to have PSP Go exclusive games, Nintendo's doing it and they seem to be doing just fine last time I checked.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 6th 2009 10:14AM
@Vidikron
True, but even new physical games go on sale etc. I'm thinking a PSP game sale online will be few and far between.
Vidikron @ Jul 6th 2009 10:14AM
Nintendo is saying they'll do it, but we haven't seen it beyond the DS Shop.
PN04 @ Jul 6th 2009 10:24AM
I constantly find it hilarious that people actually think they'd change anything significant about the device and expect it to still work with all the previous games created. Some of you people are probably still calling it a PSP2 I bet.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 6th 2009 10:26AM
Apparently you've never heard of backward compatibility?
Seishino @ Jul 6th 2009 11:03AM
Most programming these days is processor speed agnostic. I'd be kind of shocked if a faster processor didn't just results (99%of the time) in a more rock solid framerate and faster transitions.
Roto13 @ Jul 6th 2009 11:45AM
I'm totally cool with the fact that it's not a PSP 2, but come on, give me a reason to choose it over a PSP 3000 with a 16 gig memory stick. Or two 8s or however that works. I only have a 4 gig stick and I'm doing fine.
The Baron @ Jul 6th 2009 2:31PM
This is very true. Apart from poorly coded open-world games (Asscreed + GTA4 PC ports anybody?), CPU requirements on games have not really changed in the last 4 years.
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 6th 2009 9:23AM
Of course.
acefondu @ Jul 6th 2009 9:24AM
+1 to Blazblue avatar. Unrelated to PSP Go...but I have no comment on that eye sore.
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 6th 2009 9:29AM
You can see it? I uploaded it last week and I saw it once...now it's just a white block.
Cody @ Jul 6th 2009 9:35AM
I've been attempting to upload an avatar for the past 2 weeks, everyday, 3 to 4 times a day to no avail.
Jostiq's avatar system FTMFL :(
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jul 6th 2009 9:39AM
me too. it just aint having it.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 6th 2009 9:47AM
If you haven't used Firefox to do it, try that. That's what worked for me.
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 6th 2009 9:57AM
I only use Firefox.
Mr Khan @ Jul 6th 2009 11:00AM
Firefox allows the avatar to upload at all, which is a start over Internet Explorer. But Firefox doesn't stop the avatars from switching out at random intervals: that's purely a weblogs server problem
Roto13 @ Jul 6th 2009 11:50AM
This is exactly why I haven't changed my avatar since I joined.
The Baron @ Jul 6th 2009 3:43PM
Same. I think I might have changed it a different picture of Poirot at one point, and for two weeks it would intermittently change between the two, like some ultra-niche .gif
Sly @ Jul 6th 2009 4:42PM
in google chrome, they almost never uploaded for me. but in firefox, 3 uploaded perfectly in a row. and it seems like the newest uploaded one actually sticks around for the most part. if my sly cooper 2 avatar isn't showing up, disregard the sticking around part.
Emperor_Den_Den @ Jul 6th 2009 9:24AM
woo wee more net crack from joystick. Man I feel like some adicted junkie just waiting for you guys to post something new, although it sucks to see that the psp go isn't looking like a good buy. Hmmmmmz methinks I'll continue to refresh the main page till my pusher drops off some more rocks.
Emperor_Den_Den @ Jul 6th 2009 9:30AM
hey I just thought about something. Remember that one thing sony made looked real simular to this but it had a keypad instead of the buttons and what not? I wonder how that doohicky did.
Shiaoran @ Jul 6th 2009 9:45AM
Milo.
It was discontinued and rumors says it's because of a soon to be announced PSP-Milo fusion.
Instead Sony came up with this crap known as PSP Go.
Jono @ Jul 6th 2009 9:24AM
Introducing, PSP Go (Buy the PSP-3000)!
Shiaoran @ Jul 6th 2009 9:35AM
Wrong, the 3000 lacks certain abilities of the 1000 and most 2000... ;)
Jono @ Jul 6th 2009 10:36AM
Like what?
Josh @ Jul 6th 2009 2:19PM
A non-broken screen.
Seriously, 2000 remains the best, even with the ghosting.
AvA (ice~) @ Jul 6th 2009 2:26PM
I was actually planning on buying a new PSP soon. So i'd like to know why I shouldn't get a 3000. I was going to get the Dissidia bundle in August, I forgot if that's a 2000 or 3000. which one has the mic that I can use with skype? which one is more worth it basically?
Cheesus(Crust) @ Jul 6th 2009 10:19PM
No CFW on 3000. You can still run homebrew, but ISOs? Forget about it.
Malleus @ Jul 6th 2009 11:49AM
I've never heard of usb transfers measured in MHz.
gluteu$maximus @ Jul 6th 2009 12:20PM
USB 2.0 is 480 Mbps in a serial bus is the same as 480Mhz 1bit = 1cycle.
But where is the USB connector??
I smell special cord that cost $50. So get ready to pay more if you want to continue using your media manager software.
Jcarpio @ Jul 6th 2009 9:30AM
So you're paying for more internal memory, but minus the ability to get cheaper PSP games due to lack of a UMD drive.
As Jono said, just get a PSP-3k. or an iPod Touch or a DSi
Ashitaka @ Jul 6th 2009 10:02AM
iPod Touch? Don't make me laugh. I have one, and I can tell you for sure that this is no handheld, no efing way it could ever replace a PSP.
WREturns @ Jul 6th 2009 10:27AM
I replaced my PSP with an iPod Touch and never looked back. Then again, I also have a DSi.
FACE EXTRACTION @ Jul 6th 2009 9:34AM
I knew that couldn't be true--otherwise why would Sony list 333 Mhz in the press release specs?
Old Professor Zertoss @ Jul 6th 2009 9:34AM
So what benefit does vibrating your dilithium crystals at 480MHz have on USB? Is that how you achieve the theoretical maximum transfer speed of 480Mbps?
Shimrra @ Jul 6th 2009 9:36AM
You know in the beginning I was pumped to get a PSPgo but the more and more I have been reading about the device it just doesnt feel that different enough to spend $250 dollars on. I think Sony is just better to drop the price of the original PSP and hold off until the next generation of handheld devices.
Kill a mans jiro @ Jul 6th 2009 9:37AM
Hey As long as i get to Output MGS Peacewalker onto my TV using the PSPgo's Video-out Cables PLUS use my Sixaxis with it, im fine tbh.
No doubt the Price will drop either, im telling u that $250/£230(unconfirmed) is not gonna stick, not enough people will get it at that price.
Bowser Rogozhin: Death of a Ladies Man @ Jul 6th 2009 9:37AM
Sony are a real train wreck this generation.
Vidikron @ Jul 6th 2009 9:59AM
Sure, but this really has nothing to do with anything they did. This was just other people misinterpreting specs that were never meant for them in the first place.
WREturns @ Jul 6th 2009 10:35AM
A serious train wreck. They're like that cool guy in school that had the whole world in front of him and you go back to your hometown 6 years later and he's pumping gas. It's frustrating. You just wanna shake him and tell him to get his shit together. I guess what I'm saying is that Sony needs to go to community college for a few years and then transfer to UCSD and make something of itself.
Bowser Rogozhin: Death of a Ladies Man @ Jul 6th 2009 11:15AM
Last I heard Sony was picking up a bad tan while selling their sagging body on the gentrified Sunset Strip. It's over, man, game over. For sure, the saddest thing in life is wasted talent.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jul 6th 2009 9:38AM
"non-flipping cousin"
It slides
