Remember a couple weeks ago, when Ars Technica's trusty, eerily accurate "mole" prophesied that the 80GB PS3 would be ushered off store shelves in order to be replaced by the 160GB model, ultimately leading to the introduction of the oft-rumored PS3 slim? Remember when he (or she) said the 80GB model would have boosted sales thanks to the creation of new, attractive bundles? Did you notice the image above? Do you see where we're going with this?
One week after releasing an 80GB bundle containing Wall-E and LittleBigPlanet, Best Buy will supposedly be upping the ante with the package you see above, which includes Killzone 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Said photo was sent in to Kotaku from a Best Buy employee, and several other Best Buyers have confirmed its legitimacy. We won't know for sure until the bundle hits store shelves, but it certainly looks like the ol' "mole" might have another notch in his accurate-prediction-belt.
Update: We've received confirmation from two Best Buy employees stating the bundle is real. One employee's store anticipates the bundle will go on sale within the next week (possibly on Sunday), while the other employee says the bundle is on sale in his store in Louisiana. They claim the price of the bundle is the standard $399 price point for the 80GB system. We recommend asking your local store if it's carrying the bundle, and finding out when it'll hit shelves! Thanks, guys!

My PS2 Fat still works. Like a dream. So I'm none too concerned about the next PS3 having BC. I just want it to be cheaper so I can pick up a second one for the Blu-Ray.

Yea, I agree that this a GREAT bundle. I already have a PS3 and I have both games but Sony still has to conduct business. They NEED to offload as many of these PS3s on people as possible.
Sony would actually make a tad bit more on this $399 bundle, even at $100 price drop on the PS3 because MGS4 is $30 and KZ2 is $60 brand new and if someone was to wait for the price drop and buy both games at the same time, they would save about $10...but that is business.
Sony wants to capitalize not only on those who aren't hip to a possible price drop and get excited just see two hot games bundled with a system for $399 that is usually $399 without the games and will make the purchase but ALSO on those who are aware of the possible price drop who think the bundle is a great deal or are just impulsive enough to make the purchase.
Basically, this is business as usual and a good move to try to move the last of these units.

Yeah i know, but all my friends (i skipped last gen) told me that all the PS2s where like early xboxes, all broke, the laser reader received most complaint.
It was not 1 friend, was everyone... they all had 1 or 2 ps2 slim and everyone told me it was cheap... The place where i work there's a ps2 that only works if it's on a 45 degree inclination.
And the linux thing it's just a plus, as i read from that super_secret dude that ps3 slim won't be able to install it and the blu-ray reader will be a cheap one... i guess we'll be seeing lots of complaints, i wouldn't be an early adopter of the slim...

There's been various bundles of the PS3 for a while now, either by Sony or by retail, so that there's yet another bundle, doesn't exactly strike me as Earth shattering news. It's like throwing in a free gold plated refridgerator system for a Cadillac Escalade. It's great and all, but is it what everyone wants?
I think what everyone would REALLY wants is a price reduced PS3. And I'm beginning to wonder if Sony will maintain any momentum with all these bundles and uh, a model with a bigger hard drive. How about a cheaper model?
That's the part of the "rumor" I'm most interested in.
That I see the PS3 at the same price with different configurations week to week in Best Buy ads only frustrates me.

To those posting about the disc read errors on the fat PS2's I've had about 5 different fat PS2's and only one gave me a problem and it was only a disc door jamming problem. I had 5 because I sold most of them to make some money for college, and ended up buying others and reselling again(never learned my lesson lol). I had only 1 PS2 slim and it was hell after the first month I got it, the door shut swtch worked whenever it felt like it and I ended up breaking it trying to make it work, I had to glue the switch to be able to play games, then it started to scratch games randomly, and after that it started to freeze randomly as well, what i did was to trade it to a friend for an xbox and retrade the xbox for a fat PS2. I sold it to my cousin to get my PS3 and last time i went by it was still working fine. Of the other 4 PS2s 2 are still working, 1 was sold to a gamestop still working, and the last one is unknown.

Wow! That is quite a bundle. I play my XBOX more than my PS3 (just to put my opinion in perspective here), and I have to say that this is quite a bit better than the Fable II/Halo 3 bundle.

And I'd say the bundles are about comparable. I know this will start a flame war, but... Halo is a little bit more desirable than MGS4, I'd say (at least from a market standpoint). And as for Fable VS KZ2, I'd say they're both good titles, though quality-wise, KZ2 probably wins out by a hair. As for which of KZ and Fable is more desirable from a market standpoint, I think they're about equally known.
All and all, I'd say the included games in the bundle are about even, MAYBE giving the slight nod to Microsoft.
However, I will say that this is a very enticing bundle. Two GREAT games being offered for "free." It is a kinda nice deal, I will say.

The Halo 3/ Fable II bundle might have been better if MS wasn't packaging 2008 Zephyr Elites in the boxes...hence it's 1 star rating on Amazon.
I already bought the Uncharted pack in December when I picked up my TV, but if I hadn't, I would definitely pick this up.
I've still got a PS2 Phat from 2002 that works just fine, so why do I need BC?
If people want BC, it likely means they have a PS2...so why not just keep it and hook it up when you want to play it?

Now that's a hell of a bundle, and I think I remember seeing it was for $400 too. If I didn't already have one I would sure as hell jump at that bundle, it's not often we actually get a good one.

Yeah the Kotaku article this links to says it's $400, which is the standard PS3 price. So 2 of the best games on ps3 for free basically, can't go wrong with that.

Yeah, everyone asks me that. I bought it refurbished from Gamestop (only way to get a 60gb in my area, I hate Gamestop) and I don't think Sony would have fixed it because of that. Would they have still fixed it? My little brother bought it and he was just so pissed off at it breaking and also taking our 2.5" hard drive with it that he just wanted to get rid of it and I got him an Xbox 360 to make up for it.
I regret doing it and we should have waited and gotten it fixed. Even if we fixed the Blu-Ray drive, it probably would have died eventually from the YLOD as well. These 60gb units have the most features but also the most likely to break. : (

Thats funny because I have had my ps3 60gig since launch (thats what 3 yrs now ? ) and its still running strong no issues.. you do know you could take out the disk from the ps3, I dont understand the disk issue..
From what i've seen & read & heard the 360 has an appalling fail rate not the ps3, just sounds like a dumb move to sell a console with an impressive stability rate to buy one with such a huge failure rate.. Each to their own i guess

The PS3 has a significant hardware issue rate as well. Ironically, my PS3's Blu-Ray drive busted after playing GTA4 for just two weeks, Metal Gear Solid 4 has also damaged some drives. Whereas my 360 played GTA4 for a year no problem until it died from the E74 error in May but was fixed for free by Microsoft with a 1 week turn-around time.
I really want Sony to fix the YLOD and Blu-Ray disc issues for units outside the 1 year warranty instead of charging $150.

Does the ps3 have a significant hardware failure rate ? According to who ? where did you find this out from ? where is your source of information ? prove your statement !
Take a look at some of the you tube videos of the ps3 being dismantled, take a look at the cooling solution alone, if anything its been over engineered, hence why it has had such a low failure rate.
All electronic components have a set failure rate and the ps3 if anything is below 1%, if it was more there would be loads of people complaining about it.. Its like saying the wii should increase its warranty and offer free repairs for 3 years when their console is perfectly within the accepted failure rates.
Microsoft _had_ to extend the warranty or would have had to do a product recall because it is a shoddy/faulty product, it is being sued in california (class action lawsuit) for producing such a faulty hardware product.
You bought a second hand ps3, you have no idea what the guy before you did to it and yet you claim the ps3 has a high failure rate because of the 2nd hand console you bought. if your argument was based on solid fact I wouldn't be picking apart your argument apart right now, i still dont get the thing you made up about the hdd, that made no sense at all.. If your blu ray drive fails what does that have to do with the hdd ? That makes no sense at all, even the ylod has nothing to do with the hdd..
for proofs about the 360 issues:
http://uk.gamespot.com/news/blogs/sidebar/909182374/26580495/xbox-360-failure-fiasco-explained-in-depth.html
Takahashi quotes a Microsoft engineer who raised the issue of hardware reliability in August of 2005, months before the system's November launch. At the time, 68 of every 100 Xbox 360s made by Microsoft's Chinese manufacturing partners were coming off the line nonfunctional. Worse still, when the first batch of the system's three-core CPUs rolled off the line, only 16 percent worked.

It's a great bundle. No doubt about it. But it's not for everyone.
But Sony is missing the point. It's still $399.99 That's where they're losing people. Yes you are getting two great games in their (a $90) value) but what makes them so sure THESE are the two games people want? Not to mention the fact that they're including a game that instantly sucks 5GB off the HD with a long install time to boot. Consumers who are new to the game are not going to be impressed by those factors at all. They need to just drop the price and quit playing games. (No pun intended).

Its too big a hit to take, they are already losing some money on each console sold .. Might be breaking even now, but if they were to reduce it by $100 that would be an extra $100 loss on each one sold, the game bundles will probably only be ~ $20 loss on each bundle sold. This makes it a lot more attractive because to Sony it may only be $20 lost but the consumer each game is what $60 ? so thats a significant gain for them kind of win, win for both..

OK This is quite possibly the greatest bundle to ever exist, and I'm DAMN tempted to get this when it officially drops.
However, all the Slim rumors lately make me think I should at least wait to see what the PS3 Slim has to offer. Especially since there's a chance it may have backwards compatibility again!!
Oh PS3...so soon my friend....so soon.
