Is the drum kit above (to the right) what Guitar Hero 5 will be shipping with when it hits this September? We're not 100% sure, but a trusted source at our sister site Engadget sent in the blurry shot, leading us to believe it could very well be.
The new set bears a strong resemblance to that other full band music/rhythm game -- hey, there's even a lower bar support where the kick pedal could possibly hook on! Additionally, as Engadget rightly points out, the system controls have been moved in front of the pads. The back of the set allegedly features two kick pedal jacks and a "mysterious black mini jack" as well. We've asked for comment from Activision for confirmation of the set and have yet to hear back.

Let's hope they're nothing like the drums that came with GH:WT, orange cymbal broke, sensitivity issues on yellow and red, kick pedal not having enough grip on the floor and thus moving away all the time while playing, drum sticks snapped in half (I was not wailing like a moron, and the replacement sticks they sent were much heavier, so I guess they just used cheap ones for the first shipments), it was just a terrible experience all around.
Thank god the customer support at Activision is pretty damn decent, painless RMA's online for everything, didn't even need to send back anything or make a single phone call.

I have had no trouble with the drum set except for a slight sensitivity issue which Activision remedied quickly by sending me the drum tuner.

Am I missing something?
The article is comparing pictures of the drum set from "Guitar Hero World Tour" to that of "Guitar Hero 5". I don't see a picture of the Rock Band drums, either 1 or 2.

I noticed that too. This Joystiq article compares GH5 drums to GH: World Tour drums in the photo.
Maybe we're just slow.

I wasn't going to post the same thing. The title says that the GH5 drumset looks like the RB drum set and then they have two comparison pics from GHWT and GH5?!

I stopped playing Guitar Hero after GH 3 and even more after I saw the lame devs at Neversoft playing GH: World Tour at one of their gameplay reveals. There could not have been a more uncool moment in the history of music.

Whether it looks like RB's drums is irrelevant, as long as they work across both games.

The bar at the bottom of the RB drums that the pedal is supposed to latch on to is really annoying. It just gets in the way. That is not where I want to put the pedal. GH was on the right track by letting you place the pedal where you want.
Hammer-on chords in RB were stupid, because it's not only annoyingly difficult due to the poor mechanics, but because it's a technique that is basically unused in real rock music. I was glad that they weren't in GH.
Individual star power in band mode was a stupid idea in RB. If a person sucked enough to fail out of a song, they probably sucked enough to not be able to gather their own star power and they would sail out of the song anyway. GH had a great idea making star power universal. Not only was it easier to save yourself if you're failing out since you can use the star power that other people have gathered, but a really talented player could keep using star power over and over during a very point-rich section to increase their score dramatically.
So who's the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?

lol, fanboy alert, shall i go over the flaws of guitar hero
-pooled star power means that 1 person could be a dick, use it all, then not have any for anyone
-the online system is terrible, it is impossible to find anyone, they're all playing rock band
-the slider notes are broken
-you can move the pedal to anywhere on the RB set
-the GH pedal is shit, it is flimsy, and impossible to do heel-up on
-the characters look horrible, and not like humans
-GHWT had broken vocals, i like being able to FC something on vocals
-RB just has better support than GH, who just trashes their current game a month after release

A: If you don't like the hopo chords, strum them. It's not that hard, and the hopo chords actually feel rewarding when pulling them off.
B: There has not been a single complaint by any intelegent person over the RB pedal location, though there has been several complaints over the GH pedal's constant flipping (maybe cause it isn't set to one spot).
C: If someone fails, that's why you have teamates, to help you out, whereas, if one person sucks in GHWT they can't help to the band SP which will lead to a faster failure. And last I checked, GH decided to do the individual SP, so I guess you'll soon find yourself very fond of that while still hating RB's.

My number one main concern is reinforcement of the pads, especially the red, which, as the snare, is often hit with more force than any other.
I'm on my FOURTH set of GHWT drums (thank goodness, they were kind enough to replace under warranty) for the simple fact that during normal expert-level play, the red pad looses all its rubber to the point of irreversible damage.
Fix this, and I will upgrade, for sure.

Wait...they put in a bar to put the kick pedal on, move the controls to the front of the pads and all the sudden it "looks a lot like the Rock Band drums"? That makes no sense. 3 pads and 2 cymbals does not equal 4 pads. The two sets have some vague stylistic similarities (probably due to using parts from the same wholesale distributors), but that's nothing.
That being said, Rock Band is the better game from my experience. And whoever the tool is who said hammer-ons and pull-offs aren't used in real music needs to pick up a real guitar sometime. Playing a music sim doesn't make you a musician.

Rockband has addon cymbals and they are full cymbals as oppsed to GH:WT 1/3 of a cymbal. I think Joystiq is comparing the new GH cymbals to those ones.

...the cymbals are round instead of a semi circular shape, rock band drums don't even have cymbals! htf is that like rock band, it just seems like they padded up the WT ones

It was actually impossible to play the drums on GHWT when you were also trying to talk to friends online because the plug was above the pads, meaning you constantly pulled the headset off with flailing arms.

Does anyone who wants one somehow not already have a band kit in their home? I mean, why do they keep making new instruments in such an oversaturated genre? Is there a compelling instrument upgrade reason that I'm missing?

I don't know if it's been mentioned here already (lazy), but on the Xplay preview, they played on the old drums and there was an old kit behind Brian Bright. They mention a new guitar, but nothing about drums (or a mic).
