Nintendo is king of the UK retail gaming jungle, according to ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack data. The House of Mario holds the top four spots for titles sold on the isles during the first half of 2009.
Yes, surprisingly, Killzone 2 did take the fifth spot, beating out Resident Evil 5. ELSPA's director states that the figures indicate "gaming is now mainstream in the UK." And that a lot of people in the UK think they (or a loved one) need to lose 10 lbs.

The original Top Ten was incorrect when previously issued. Here's the correct one:
1. Wii Fit
2. FIFA 09
3. Call of Duty: World at War
4. Resident Evil 5
5. Wii Play
6. Mario Kart Wii
7. Proffesor Layton
8. Mario & Sonic
9. Street Fighter IV
10. Guitar Hero World Tour

You know that the price wasted on Wii Fit could get you about 3 months at a real health club .. haha

Not at my gym. The price doesn't even cover the sign-up fee.

3 whole months? Wow. You do know that when you buy something, you get to keep it for as long as you'd like, right? For example, if you buy Wii Fit, you can use for as long as you want. Isn't that neat?

So you think that the people that don't use their Wii Fit after 3 months will continue going to the gym after 3 months? That's fucking rich, man.

I know this is counting 2009 and all, but I'm suprised that Fifa isn't in the top five. Or have I kept my head in the sand over this?
Regardless of that, I'm really glad people have taken to Professor Layton. That game is just so, so awesome. I love it so - I'm even going to get my sister a copy this week or next.

Hmm, that explains why so many people have been able to escape the police on foot recently.

Get Wii Sports Resort and New Super Mario Bros Wii out there, and the top 6 or so will be totally monopolized by Nintendo

If Killzone 2 is on the top ten then people are beyond dumb.

Wii owners are the ones saying people should lose 10 lbs. It's about what a 360 or a PS3 weighs. It's all fanboy propoganda.

Why do these crappy Wii games sell so fricken good?
Posted: Jul 6th 2009 3:58PM mr nimblewick said
Fine, I'll answer you seriously.
These are selling well for two reasons:
1. They aren't as crappy as you think. Except for Wii Play, which is selling as a controller.
2. They hold appeal to everyone, instead of just some sweaty-fisted teenage boys and men who never stopped being teenage boys.

"men who never stopped being teenage boys."
Funny, that phrase is usually only brought up when talking about Nintendo fanboys who are still obsessed with Mario and Zelda.

Hey tmac, have you seen how many comments I've made on this video game blog today? Obviously I am still just a teenage boy at heart.
My point isn't so much that people shouldn't be teenagers at heart (though that's probably true), it's that these games appeal to more of the general public than that, hence the higher sales.

Sorry, tmac, I misread your post. In my opinion, the idea of running around and blasting away at aliens with huge guns is very much a teenage fantasy. Probably more than Mario (which appeals to a even younger demographic, as I stopped pretending I was Mario in elementary school).

As a kid, yeah. Mario was awesome. I suppose you pretended to be Nelson Mandela as a kid?

So you pretended to wrestle and I pretended to platform. I guess I was born a "core" gamer.

really? i was under the impression that people said last year and the year before were the "Best years in gaming". I question people exclaiming the death of the industry when it is pretty clear gaming is booming and quality games are coming out more often than ever.

The industry is healthy, yes. My main concern actually is that third party developers will start to devote most of there resources to making quick, cheap, "casual" types of games. I think we already are seeing the effects of this. Yes, there have been some fantastic games this generation, but they seem to be few and far between. Meanwhile the Wii shovelware pours in weekly. I can only imagine that the trend will continue to get worst by next gen.

The cheap, casual games are the only things keeping many developers afloat in this age of huge budgets. For from destroying the industry, the casual games are what is making it possible.

Yeah, that just doesn't happen. If anything, the big budget games are what is killing gaming.
...and with Ubisoft predicting that gaming budgets for next generation will regularly reach as high as $60 million, you damn sure better hope those awful casual games keep right on selling.
At any rate, it just won't happen. As long as there is a market to be served and money to be made. SOMEONE will cater to it.
YOU may not like it much, but shit, there's no shortage of people like me who about still bitter about what 3D consoles and sports games did to 2D gaming.
Now if you want an awesome 2D game, you have to buy a DS and deal with it's tiny screens while being thankful for the occasional console scrap that gets tossed your way. How sad.
