Gratuitous Space Battles is just that
Indie games developer Positech Games has been quietly working on a tower defense game set in space, and has uploaded the first footage. Gratuitous Space Battles doesn't have any kind of tentative release date, and this video is more a brief demonstration of the game's goals, but we think it's kinda cool. And if that doesn't do it for you, squint hard and pretend you're watching Battlestar Galactica.
Head past the break for the footage.

That was some rather gratuitous footage of space battles, I must say.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

Close, but it needs fleet chatter. I love hear my tiny guys talk in HW2.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Jul 7th 2009 7:43AM
man they need to make a new homeworld. i loved that game more than any C&C, it was hard as nails though.
Lord Maim @ Jul 7th 2009 9:55AM
And not those soft nails, the really hard ones made of old candy corn and Clint Eastwood's eyes.
We're talking haaard.

what is HW2?

Well, it certainly lives up to its name. I'm not so sure how well that'll play, though. Granted, I could be way off base thanks to the complete lack of context in the video, but it appears that you equip and position your fleets and then just watch the show. Personally, I hate that sort of tower defence game. I think the best games in the genre (like Plants vs Zombies, Pixeljunk Monsters, and Defense Grid: The Awakening) are so good because they keep the player active and constantly upgrading or modifying his defence. Just sitting back and passively watching the results of your actions doesn't have as much appeal to me.

Looks that way. I think it would be really cool, and still accomplish what they were going for if they added some kind of damage control mini-game to be played while the battles were going on. That way you could still be playing a kind of behind the scenes role without just sitting on your hands while the game was going on. If they balanced it right and made the damage control portion not a chore, it could be a blast.

That actually looks like a lot of fun. I can't wait.

I like a game that sums itself up like that, Plants vs Zombies being a good example.

I'd buy it just for the name, then invite people over to play it. It would be lawlsome.

Best name ever!
PSN version please, currently home to the tastiest tower defense buffet (not counting iPhone).

If you have a good enough PC, you should take a look at Defense Grid: The Awakening on Steam.

I was actually playing the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack when I read this post and watched the video (I muted the video). The music seemed to fit quite nicely.
Tez @ Jul 7th 2009 7:24AM
I like it. Hope it makes it to PSN and XBLA.
j.howlett @ Jul 7th 2009 8:48AM
