Johnny Lee: Natal will spawn new genres
If Johnny Chung Lee says something, we're inclined to believe him, and not just because we're almost certain he's a wizard. So when he says that Microsoft's body-tracking Project Natal will "almost certainly" spawn new genres, we're inclined to nod our heads in agreement.
"Natal provides a very different set of input capabilities than your typical game pad," he told 360 Magazine. "To really take advantage of those capabilities, new kinds of experiences will have to be explored."
Wait, is "NAMBLA sim" a genre?

You don't insult Johnny Lee.
*squints eyes menacingly*
Not in front of me you don't.

I'm sorry, the light, it reflected off your head and I didn't see you standing there.

Good thing he attempted to cover up that shiner with a hat that's way to small.

I wonder what these genres will be called.
Honestly though? I think he's full of it.

"The quest to find what the bottom of an avatar's shoe looks like"
Probably not, the title's too long.
Ashitaka @ Jul 7th 2009 10:13AM
Ops, I misread your post, I thought you were asking about 'names', not 'genres'.
On a more serious note, I don't think that Natal is that innovative to be able to spawn new genres... But basically every single genre on the Wii will be possible on the Xbox.
Kadamon @ Jul 7th 2009 10:17AM
Heh. Sounds about right.
I guss I might be a little old fashioned because I like to be lazy when I play my videogames. I enjoy my 'game pad' and lounging sideways playing some game...
If I wanted to use my body for games...I'd go outside and do stuff, like play football.
Besides, I don't think Natal will be all that useful for certain genres. Can you imagine playing a Platformer on one of these things if you don't have a controller?
ilovethewaggle @ Jul 7th 2009 10:38AM
It'l be called the port port or "PeePee" for short.
example. RE4 ported to Wii ported to Natal
then once sony gets in on the game they'll invent a new one called the tripple port.

I'm 90% excited for Natal tech. It would be 100% but I hate that dude and his glasses on all the time.
Dirty @ Jul 7th 2009 10:20AM
Dude he has a condition get over it.
ilovethewaggle @ Jul 7th 2009 10:42AM
Johnny Lee wears sunglasses at night
So he can, So he can
Watch you play Natal
And roll around in your money
uncle jesse @ Jul 7th 2009 11:01AM
I know he has a condition, but does he have to wear THOSE glasses?
Jason @ Jul 11th 2009 7:16PM
I completely agree. I am really looking forward to Project Natal (PN) and everything that goes along with it except for this D-Bag. His fancy bitch glasses combined with his public speaking abilities make me wish he were in some PN boxing game where I could punch the living pulp out of his douchey ass.
ronEbear @ Jul 7th 2009 10:10AM
I was just imagining a swimming game. How peaceful it was in my mind.
Then I imagined a rock climbing game. How perilous it felt in my mind.
Finally I imagined a game that simulates the movements of a mime. It was called mime hero in my mind.

lol good post
now lay off those drugs ;)

It's 4:20 somewhere......
Morisato @ Jul 7th 2009 12:31PM
@playwhutyalike
Actually it's not. In order for it to be 4:20 somewhere, your clock has to be on the :20 since timezones are by the hour.
playwhutyalike @ Jul 7th 2009 1:51PM
Holy shit, really!?!!?!?!?!?!?
It's called a joke. You should try telling one sometime, instead of being one.

Hey, I don't think anybody's made a card game for the big consoles (except maybe budget publishers), so hence.

Comes with a pack of cards, so you can scan them in and shuffle just like in real life.

Didn't Eye of Judgemnt sorta do that?
I don't think it went very well >.

The new genre of shovelware...
wait the wii invented that.
Mr Khan @ Jul 7th 2009 11:23AM
Yup. Exactly. Wii invented shovelware.
Nice trolling.
Inect @ Jul 7th 2009 8:21PM

Boom Boom Pow.
sc00by_y00 @ Jul 7th 2009 10:17AM
Another way of reading this is that Natal doesn't fit in with any current genre of game so some type of shovel ware will have to be created to cater to natals needs..
Seriously shouldn't Johnny be sat in a lab somewhere perfecting the technologies rather than talking about said technology ?.. I would rather know about what he is doing in particular what he is helping to produce rather than some pr bullshit they make him talk about.
Welcome to the Microsoft pay role, your now no longer a well respected PhD Researcher and well respected programmer your are now one of their marketing drones, PR cheer leader all the way woohoo salute with your pom poms yay !! ..
Tony @ Jul 7th 2009 10:24AM
Lee is hardly making major rounds or anything. He can't be proud of his work and talk about it?
Also, it seems some people aren't noticing this isn't the guy in that picture.
sc00by_y00 @ Jul 7th 2009 10:38AM
tony is he talking about his work ? Or blurting out Microsoft propaganda ?
This shit is like so advanced dude that it needs whole new genres invented just so that you can use the natal ..
Now if he put down the Microsoft crack pipe for a second, he should be thinking whats the point to natal if it needs a whole new genre to be invented ?
put the PR into overdrive number 1.. ENGAGE !

I cant think of another system in history that has so redefined itself as many times as the 360 and been as sucessful. Way to keep me interested MS.
roger @ Jul 7th 2009 10:35AM
What you call interested I say they got you hook, line and sinker. The MS PR department should be mighty proud of themselves.
phobic99 @ Jul 7th 2009 11:02AM
Sega 32X and Sega CD say hi?
Damn... who am I kidding with those? *frown*
Captain Planet @ Jul 7th 2009 11:06AM
Gameboy?
DS?
PS2?
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 7th 2009 11:40AM
How has the 360 redefined itself?
It updated it's interface with a Mii ripoff that failed to spur sales. There are almost no games using said Mii ripoffs, unless you're in a beta or an avid Uno player, too :\
That's hardly my definition of 'successful'.
HitNRun @ Jul 7th 2009 12:29PM
I count myself as a mild 360 fanboy, but I can't think of anything "interesting" about any of the 360's "redefinitions" thus far. I'd still pay about $10 to lose NXE.
Captain Planet @ Jul 7th 2009 1:29PM
Failed to spur sales? Are you fucking stupid? Try searching for "NXE + sales" and please, present your findings here.
And while I could care less for the avatars on the 360, Mii ripoffs they are not. They are what Miis should have been. But I always forget, Nintendoits nut all over anything Nintendo shoves down their throats and lauds as "the future of gaming as we know it".
Phizzy @ Jul 7th 2009 1:57PM
Captain planet talking about sales figures? He's become a corporate puppet!
YOU'VE CHANGED, CP! DID THE 'HEART' KID DIE?
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 7th 2009 2:32PM
I did, moron. Increased XBLA sales might be nice, but they haven't done shit for the 360's install base.
Avatars are VERY clearly a response to Mii's. The fact that the audience MS was targeting by rolling out a system like that has shown absolutely no interest in it speaks volumes.
There has been no overall increase in the 360's sales YOY in any region. Certainly not a significant one, at least. Not even back earlier this year when they rolled NXE out.
-Vexx- @ Jul 7th 2009 10:38AM
New games? Yes
New genres? No. If you consider bigger mini games a genre.
KingOfHearts @ Jul 7th 2009 10:39AM
Didnt they say the same thing about the Wii when it came out?
The Baron @ Jul 7th 2009 10:55AM
Well, isn't 'waggle-fest' now a legitimate genre?
jason w @ Jul 7th 2009 10:44AM
Most likely. What I was thinking of is the NXE and now this. When NXE and the netflix and then media center stuff was added it all changed how i used and thought about my system. I have the other 2 as well. I just like games not really big on the console penis measuring that goes on on the internet. I like getting something I didnt bargin for when I bought the system. This time it will cost but the last few updates that have keept me interested in the console long after i exspected.
