If Johnny Chung Lee says something, we're inclined to believe him, and not just because we're almost certain he's a wizard. So when he says that Microsoft's body-tracking Project Natal will "almost certainly" spawn new genres, we're inclined to nod our heads in agreement.
"Natal provides a very different set of input capabilities than your typical game pad," he told 360 Magazine. "To really take advantage of those capabilities, new kinds of experiences will have to be explored."
Wait, is "NAMBLA sim" a genre?

Well it seems pretty useless for any of the current games,
so I guess it makes sense that you'd have to make new ones just to have a use for the thing.

That was a trading card game, not a traditional card game. And no, it didn't do very well.

Game Boy and DS and PS2 you had to buy new systems. Not with this. Its just a add on. Sometimes add ons work sometimes they dont.

That's what they said about the Wiimote, too.
video game developers have SUCH a great track record when it comes to thinking outside the box.

If anything, it teaches us that the first couple years of this thing will just be 3rd parties trying to figure out how to shoe-horn it into the same old games they've made for years, and when that inevitably fails, blame the hardware and go back to doing what they do best.

Yup, I can already think of a few.
Playboy mansion VR (with webcam interactivity - eg command: strip)
Pick the hair off the hairy man
Do the teabagging squats
Jump around like a prat
Jump around some more
Get bored
Grab a controller
Sit down
Play halo instead ¬_¬

This could certainly be revolutionary to the fighting and sports genres, but we'll need to see some real creativity to push it beyond that.
Certainly there's someone out there up to the challenge, but i doubt that someone sits among the ranks of the major 3rd party developers. I wonder what else Microsoft is cooking up for this...

They'll have some sort of motion controller to go along with it. There's no way they won't. One way or the other, this thing is intended to be Xbox 3. MS has gotten to where they are now on the backs of 'hardcore' gamers.
There's no way they'll risk abandoning them by putting themselves a Wii-esque situation where developers can't get their damn heads around the control concept and, thus, either don't make games or make B-levels games at best.
Of course, I'm assuming that they'll have SOME sort of Wiimote clone; and since it's Microsoft, it's likely that 3rd parties will at least ATTEMPT to work with it. Of course, I also expect the controller to be more functional than the Wiimote, in terms of buttons and such.

Like I said im not into the console penis measuring. Since i have all 3 and dont care for sausage fest its not really a big deal if one console has Miis and the other has Avatars. As of a few days ago there are several Avatar games and the 1 vs 100 beta is for all so thats not really an issue. I dont really care for Avatars or Miis but if thats what makes you love you console, good for you. Enjoy. I hope you have as much fun with that as I do playing games.
As for the redefine I like the Media center stuff, Use the netflix stuff all the time(I do this on my PS3 too via playon) and I loved the NXE. It is a cleaner set up over all. I look forward to the new full motion controls even though I enjoy Wii sports now. I like how it flows easier than before. Im sorry you dont but it really doesnt detract from my enjoyment. I just wish you the same enjoyment with yours.

Ok, you geniuses who kept referring to Johnny Lee as 'that dude in the picture' are all banned from video games forever.
The picture is of KUDO TSUNODA.
Remember that name, he will show you the bottom of his avatar's shoe one day.
BAM.

my guess is that it will spawn a bunch of repetitive mini games, party games and ball-hitting games (and not the fun kind).

That pic of him kills me. It already looks like he's wearing a pair of Blue Blockers. Replace those with the old lady Terminator sunglasses, and give him a cane and the shakes. Would ya listen to him then? I kid, I kid.
In all seriousness... Project Natal reminds me of when virtual reality first hit. Both are amazing steps in gaming/simulation. My personal feeling is that like VR... this will get fizzle out over time. Not for lack of ingenuity, but for our current lifestyle. A lot of people game in a living room or bedroom, which presents some issues when dealing with motion capture. We game and want to have a drink or eat while playing. Family and/or friends walk between us and the screen we play on. Sometimes our heads might itch. How will Natal account for just these few simple situations?

For the love of god, why is there so much stupid in the air when talking about Natal?
Seriously, why even worry about the shovelware when Natal will enable HEAD TRACKING in all your hardcore space marine shoot-em-ups. That alone makes Natal awesome. Bet they could even patch head tracking into Halo 3/CoD once Natal is out.

Head tracking? In a FPS? Seriously? That sounds like an option that I'd would check out for a half an hour and then totally ignore.

New Genres?
I'm pretty sure similar comments were touted when the Wii was announced, but that hasn't quite happened. Granted we've seen variations, modifications and new takes of existing genres; but no "new" genres. It's not a bad thing, it's just not great for companies to hype a product by saying it'll create new genres and not being able to deliver. It makes your future "predictions" and hype less believable.
Having said that, I would love to be proven wrong and see something so new and fascinating that brings something to gaming that no game/genre has done before.
Time will tell - but so far the most interesting thing I've seen regarding Project Natal is the ability to manipulate the 360 dashboard by waving your hands in pre-determined gestures. "Milo" has failed to capture any respect from me, because it looks quite dull and boring (though that might be because of Lionheads choice to use a young boy as it's protagonist, as opposed to someone I'd rather relate to, someone closer to my age or older.)

I think it could be pretty cool. I'm hoping for some sort of guitar trainer that tracks your hand movement / finger placement and tells you if youre strumming too fast, where to put your fingers, etc.

I expect the new genres on natal to include the following revolutionary new genres that will change the way we perceive entertainment:
Minigame collections
“Air Guitar Hero,” which will actually ship with a physical box containing an air guitar
Slightly different minigame collections
A fitness game with a title like “Motion Body” or something
A self help game that comes with a whiteboard peripheral that you can write positive statements on. You hold it up to the camera and the game shows that it recognizes it by saying something that has nothing to do with what you wrote.
A video conferencing application that will have an article written about it in Time Magazine, because talking to people face to face is a new revolution in the social structure of Web 2.0 user generated web 3.0 welcome to the social
