New MechWarrior teased by IGN site [update]

With the subtlety of a grand piano falling down the stairs, IGN's Voodoo Extreme is teasing that a new MechWarrior title will be announced shortly. Allegedly in development by Piranha Games, it would be the first "official" MechWarrior game in nearly a decade. The site teases that Piranha may have a full trailer up later this week.

The last time MechWarrior popped up on radar was when the property was licensed to Jordan Weisman after the dissolution of FASA. If Piranha is actually developing a true Mechwarrior sequel, it would appear to be the studio's first mega solo project. We're currently attempting to get in touch with Piranha Games for more details.

Update: A representative for Piranha replied to our inquiry, "We can't share any details right now, but will get in touch with you as soon as we are able." "Can't" ... or won't? Weird. Still following up.

I'm torn between Mechwarrior (1) and Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries.
Mechwarrior was just so excellent in how you could travel between planets and collect missions, but it didn't play as well as 2. And Mercenaries added on a lot of the mission choosing and stuff that made the original Mechwarrior sweet.

If this isn't a bullshit "Mechassault" version, and actually is a full-on legitimate MechWarrior game, I know 5 people in my area that are buying it, if it's on any platform other than the Wii.

p.s. see "wing commander arcade", basically every lucas arts game since x-wing alliance and the new star trek game for xbox arcade for examples of arcade games that are NOT good for what they are and ALSO ruin the original IP :-)

KOTOR - BioWare
Republic Commando - Sorry, this did ruin the IP, given the length and ending
Battlefront - Pandemic
Rogue Squadron - Factor 5
The Force Unleashed - There's one that actually works
Empire at War - Petroglyph
Bounty Hunter - This wasn't good

So, only ONE game developed by LucasArts. The good Star Wars IP weren't developed by LucasArts. So, the claim stands true.

Wow, my 3rd favorite game ever (after Freelancer and Soul Reaver 1) is getting a sequel. Awsome!

I do hope they don't:
1. Release it only for consoles I don't have
2. Mess up the controls to make it unplayable
3. Change the concept entirely
4. All of the above (*ahemmechassaultahem*)

I wonder if this will be better than Living Legends (http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/)...

Oh man... what an unexpectedly awesome game Freelancer was. It's only downfall to me was that it only tied in to StarLancer in the intro movie and never mentioned the alliance or coalition throughout the rest of the game. I was soooo sure that the aliens that were causing so much trouble in the story were going to be revealed to be the Coalition or something, but alas. The music for the game was really awesome too.

this reminds me of a Mech game I played back in the late 90's/early 00's. I dont remember what it was called, but it was in first person and it took place in a barren desert.

Oh, and it had an intro vid that ended with some dude waking up from a dream where his mech got blown up

and the game was "open world" but if you went too far off course you'd hear a computer voice countdown from 5 then your mech would automatically explode.

:) Yeah, I bought StarLancer for both the PC and Dreamcast, don't ask why I bought both. It was alright, but both versions were buggy and I never finished them (The PC version crashed, and the DC version didn't support the flight stick I bought that it said it supported on the back of the CD case). It's still been a very long time since even StarLancer though. I've had to play games like Jedi Starfighter and Battlestar Galactica for the Xbox1 just to have some sort of space flight combat game to play.

I can't make those out clearly, even in HD. But the closest thing in terms of shape, and that line in the middle would be House Davion, and they've been the "hero" faction since the beginning of the Clan War, so it doesn't say a whole lot if it's true.
