Plenty of post-release content planned for Section 8
We've got high hopes for Section 8, a promising sci-fi FPS from TimeGate. But today we learned that the game has even more going for it than the ability to drop from space and kill a tank (which you can admit is already quite a lot). The devs are also pretty adept at forward thinking.
Producer Robert Siwiak told Gamasutra, "We're already planning on releasing additional map packs and other content, potentially new weapons and vehicles into the mix. After the game has launched, we fully intend to support the community and add in additional content and otherwise fill the gap between now and a potential Section 8 sequel."
Yikes, already thinking sequels, TimeGate? Live in the now!

Apparently these guys didn't get the memo on how DLC destroys the video game industry.

Is it too much to ask for some Sony love? I WANNA KILL TANKS TOO!
tuck @ Jul 7th 2009 12:10PM
If anyone else has seen the beta multiplayer footage on youtube they know how hard this game is gonna fail. Then again, they still have time to fix it.
Girugamuk (Moptimus Slimed) @ Jul 7th 2009 12:13PM
was this the awesome FPS where you could get dropped onto an opponent to kill them?
Because if it is the FUCK YES
Ryan @ Jul 7th 2009 12:26PM
I really hope this isnt the same old BS where the data is on disc and youre paying for an unlock code...
SidearmS @ Jul 7th 2009 12:27PM
The game is still in BETA? So, wait, the game is not even out and yet they are ALREADY talking about DLC?
P-A-S-S. Automatic NO BUY. When you have SOMETHING on the actual market, THEN you can talk DLC. But I for one am pretty sick and tired of hearing about games NOT EVEN OUT and their DLC plans. I do not care how long of a tail you want for your title, I am fed up with hearing about DLC from games - especially when the game is not even out!
If you got time to talk about this stuff while the game is still being made, you have time to put all that stuff on the DVD itself. Same old story - $60 game AND THEN we also have DLC too! YAY!
No, BOO! You can keep your stupid game and it's DLC. Same old crap anyway. Maps? Weapons? Skins? SO? Why should this make me care?
XBox 360 - The lack of activity from me is also known as VOTING WITH MY WALLET.
Spallit @ Jul 7th 2009 12:34PM
Calm down, man. I'm worried about your heart...:(
Breedlove @ Jul 7th 2009 12:49PM
Oh noes!!! You aren't going to buy?? Someone call Timegate and tell them to stop production so we can address SidearmS concerns over DLC being announced ahead of time.
Einhanderkiller @ Jul 7th 2009 1:13PM
They never said it was DLC. It could just be free updates, on PC at least.
SidearmS @ Jul 7th 2009 1:16PM
@Spallit : YOU CRAZY KIDS! GET YOUR DLC OFF MY LAWN BEFO... *HEART EXPLODES*
@Breedlove - They should stop production, they just deep-sixxed their game with this announcement. Even the article above states for them to "LIVE IN THE NOW!". Announcing DLC is one thing, annoucing DLC when you are in beta is STUPID. The game is not that popular to get away with this tactic. And again, what they announced is no different from what EVERY FPS/Shooter announces. So again, yeah, pull the plug, this game is going to tank and tank hard.
But really, how many articles have we seen in the past couple of weeks on game pricing, used games, and downward sales tracking? Just yesterday we had an article talking about DLC being a threat to retail. Which in some ways it is, but in other ways DLC is playing a dangerous game itself. Make it appear like you are holding content back and your game will tank. A lot of people do not like DLC that is fishy - ie NEED FOR SPEED, BEAUTIFUL KATAMARI. There are a lot more examples than these two as well.
@Nozzinja - Trust me, this game is a NO BUY. Another shooter with more guys in armor. WHOPPEE. *SPINS FINGER IN THE AIR*. Unless it brings something clearly new to the table, this game will fall through the cracks just like several other shooters on the 360 (The Darkness, Prey, Dark Sector, Area 51, Timeshift etc.). I might check this out at a sub $20 level, but certainly not $60.
XBox 360 - If more people did listen to me instead of typing fanboy replies like Breedlove, we might have something different to talk about. But hey, ignorance is bliss...

I'm so god-damned tired of all the conspiracy theory bullshit about DLC.
Talking about DLC before the game is out is much more reasonable than you seem to think. To understand this, you must understand game development and general business practices.
1. Most devs have timelines. I say most, cause some are like id and will almost infinitely throw a 'done when it's done' mentality at it... but for the most part, publishers need to see their money back and need to have a product out the door by "x" date.
2. Devs have to restrain themselves. This sort of ties to number 1. When creating a game, devs come up with thousands of ideas and only a handful make it to the game. Some are worked on and have to be dropped mid development, again due to time and or money, or even possibly storage restraints.
3. Talk is cheap. Talk is quick. Talk is easy. It's REALLY easy to be developing a game and look to the future fairly reasonably. This is to say, a good project manager knows what they have time for moving forward, knows what time they've already used, knows what's going to have to be dropped, and knows where the game will need to improve... all before the product goes out the door. Any dev will tell you that there's a point where you HAVE to just 'let go' of the game and let it ship. There will ALWAYS be bugs to smash. There will ALWAYS be code to optimize, and systems to tweak. But the product HAS to hit the shelves at a reasonable time and start making some ROI so they can gauge success, and gauge possibilities of improvement and support post release.
Therefore, it's really easy to communicate plans to improve on all these things before the game's done.
4. Games must be playtested.
There's a point when it's unreasonable to continue to add content to a game, because the game must be 'put down' and tested. Only game breaking content issues, at this point, get to be address. If they were to continue add content too far into the test cycle, it becomes impossible to 'stabilize' this 'ever changing' beast that is 'the game'. So again, before the game hits shelves they'll have a pretty good idea of what is and what isn't going to be in the game. This also means that, depending on the dev and staffing, that the content creators have extra time to make more content. If they don't share a dual role as a play tester (and they haven't been set loose on vacation or something), they can make more content while others are doing the bug squashing. Again, ALL BEFORE THE GAME SHIPS.
So again, there is no conspiracy going on here. Not with most devs, at least. Sure, there will be some devs/publishers that will purposely milk the "DLC cash cow", but normally it's pretty obvious, and the industry and community as a whole call them out on it. But again, this is rare.
This dribble you spew about "game in BETA; talk about DLC = Automatic NO BUY." is completely extreme, uninformed, and immature.
If you stopped for a second and realized that devs are PEOPLE, you'd see that your broadscope mentality for DLC talk is bullshit.
Nozzinja @ Jul 7th 2009 12:32PM
If you dont like the game enough, dont buy the DLC - simple.
IMO its always a good thing to hear about the plans to keep games fresh through DLC, usually a company knows how much DLC they are going to release when development starts on the game so i can't see how stating that the game will be supported at an early stage would alienate anyone.
Dont hate, Congratulate..
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 7th 2009 12:32PM
I do just fine with elbow-dropping tanks in Prototype, thanks.
DrFreeman @ Jul 7th 2009 2:48PM
From looking at the screen I thought this was Halo 3.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 7th 2009 4:22PM
it's all that weed clouding your memory man
Hedgeson @ Jul 7th 2009 5:55PM
It's a nice screenshot.
From seeing a video on Gametrailers... blergh. Right now, it looks dry and unoriginal. The gameplay is awful.
Nozzinja @ Jul 7th 2009 1:54PM
to be honest im not really bothered about this game but what i was trying to get across was that DLC for some people is the icing on top of an already sweet cake.
I agree with you to some degree that some DLC is weak but, would you rather see an updated version of a game for full price in retail or would you rather see those "added" features as part of DLC? and yes im getting at Left for Dead 2, to me it just looks like DLC and in my opinion it shouldn't be full price.
LOL @ " *SPINS FINGER IN THE AIR* " i love when people use their hands to try and emphasize their points.
Nozzinja @ Jul 7th 2009 1:54PM
F*** the reply system!!
mwrench @ Jul 7th 2009 5:08PM
I wonder if the DLC will be released on the First of da Month, like when my other gov't assistance arrives.
ArchiGamer @ Jul 7th 2009 6:05PM
I see Halo 3 is doing quite nicely.
