Review: Tales of Monkey Island (Launch of the Screaming Narwhal)

It's a relief, then, to declare the first episode of Telltale's five-part Tales of Monkey Island series a wonderful, heart-warming reunion. Grandma's back, full of life and ready to bake some cookies!
Okay, so her eyeballs will occasionally fall out, but it's nothing that can't be fixed with some time and some practice.

There's a point in the game where series protagonist and beacon of ineptitude Guybrush Threepwood is barred from opening a sinister-looking chest. "It's a mysterious chest I won't be opening in THIS episode," he cheekily remarks. The wit and wordplay have definitely been preserved in Telltale's Monkey Island captaincy, as have the sly pop culture references and playful anachronisms that have pervaded the series since Ron Gilbert's original. They're not limited to just the well-acted piratey banter, either, since you can also look forward to carrying around the physical manifestation of an internet phenomenon in your inventory.
While the game as a whole isn't as consistently funny as the later episodes in Sam & Max -- it feels like Telltale is still finding its comedic stride here -- it does set up a tantalizing predicament for old friends and foes. After a voodoo-infused encounter with dreaded ghost/zombie/demon pirate LeChuck (sadly no longer voiced by Earl Boen), Guybrush winds up stranded on Flotsam Island, home to a newspaper of questionable repute, a unicorn-loving glassblower and a delightfully deranged doctor. Most of the new characters don't have enough time to flourish, but at least one gets his foot in the door as an amusing alternate villain. And that's to say nothing of the one who gets his hand in the door.
Aside from hitting all the right notes when it comes to music and visuals, Telltale strikes a great balance between logic and absurdity for its puzzles ... for the most part, at least. The game's worst sequence, by far, involves the traversal of a jungle maze. Figuring it out and following the game's instructions is hardly challenging, but triggering the actual puzzle and forcing the game to pay attention to what you're doing requires a bizarre act which never really makes sense. And it doesn't make sense when you do the second maze puzzle, either. Running around the jungle also highlights a problem with the controls: between the two options available to you, it's far more efficient to maneuver Guybrush with the keyboard than it is to hold down a button and drag him along with the mouse. Whatever happened to just pointing and, you know, clicking where you want to go?
The few maze missteps aside, Launch of the Screaming Narwhal is a good start and a good indication of how well Telltale is treating grandma now that she's back. Uh, Monkey Island, now that Monkey Island is back. What a creepy metaphor.
[Tales of Monkey Island: Chapter 1 is available from the Telltale Games website as part of a season bundle ($34.95). Details on the Wiiware version will be announced at a later stage.]

I bought a Wii Point card specifically for this. I can't wait !
I hope Murray is back.

I make better cookies than my actual Grandma does. Monkey Island's cookies, though... now those could be a worthy opponent to my cookie mastery.
I am dead serious.

On a side note: He's holding a bottle of root beer. I like root beer. A lot.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 7th 2009 1:27PM
I can see it. Pulling sone freshly baked cookies from the oven, you declare, "This is how it's done." You then throw them at Granny's noggin exclaiming, "In your face!" You walk off triumphantly as the sweet treats slowly fall of after releasing the melted chocolate chip goo.
Professor Lario @ Jul 7th 2009 1:29PM
Ok Mr. Root Beer Pro - what are the best ones? And don't say something you make in your basement - I want something I can buy! : )
cuteSAVAGE @ Jul 7th 2009 2:01PM
Mmmmm, Root Beer! Barq's is by far the best major brand. IBC is quite good, but I have a very hard time finding it anywhere (their Cream Soda is hands down the best too).
Here in Seattle we have a local brewer that makes Americana Microcrafted Cream Style. Great stuff.
[tre] @ Jul 7th 2009 2:08PM
Oh ho ho, you think I don't know what the best brand is? BARQ'S! IT'S GOT BITE!
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jul 7th 2009 2:11PM
Root beer is tasty. All the major brands I can think of off-hand (Barq's, Mug, A&W) are nice. Mug seems especially sweet, and A&W is tamer than Barq's, at least I think. IBC and Maine Root aren't bad either. Jones root beer is OK.
rollntider @ Jul 11th 2009 10:00PM
try virgils rootbeer. It is actually brewed and uses real cane sugar.
Jordan @ Jul 13th 2009 3:28PM
Sprecher Root Beer. Full stop.

Now if the XBLA version would hurry up and release. . .
Snowblind @ Jul 7th 2009 1:13PM
The remake is coming on the 15th. They haven't said if they're going to port this to XBLA, but if they do, it won't be anytime soon. They'll probably release it as one big thing, like they did with Sam & Max.
copa @ Jul 7th 2009 1:39PM
Speaking of which, I just downloaded the demo of Sam and Max onto XBLA. After playing for about 20 minutes, I set it aside.
One of the main draws of Sam and Max for me was that reviewers like Ludwig were touting the humor of the series. But I just didn't find it funny. It wasn't horribly grating; it wasn't terrible. But the dialogue felt like the writers were trying really hard to be clever, and it just felt forced and not funny.
I just noticed Ludwig's line in this article: "While the game as a whole isn't as consistently funny as the later episodes in Sam & Max..." My question is: is there really a marked improvement in writing in the later episodes? If I found the first episode a bit of a chore, am I really going to get sucked in by the remainder of the first season?
(As a point of comparison, I thought Wallace and Gromit was very successful. It felt more low-key and natural, and I found it very charming.)
danielsdesk @ Jul 7th 2009 3:23PM
@copa
Sam and Max humor has been like that since the comics and the first adventure game, so really either you like that kind of humor or you don't. That being said, I wouldn't judge your enjoyment of it based solely on the first episode; that was telltale's first attempt at this sort of thing and they have absolutely gone leaps and bounds better in each subsequent episode. The second season of Sam and Max alone is a good enough example of how much better they got. After doing Sam and Max and various other projects, they tackled Homestar Runner (of which the first episode was also obviously them trying to find their ground, and each episode got extremely better after that one), so by the time they got to Wallace and Gromit, they have had a couple of these under their belt.

Now if only I could get into telltale.com to DOWNLOAD it! It's been having some rough bumps today... :(
Snowblind @ Jul 7th 2009 1:18PM
According to their Twitter, they're working on it.
The game still isn't up anyway :(
Comet @ Jul 7th 2009 1:17PM
How much is the WiiWare version? If its 1000 points per episode I think I'll just buy the box set and wait 5 months.

Mac support? Pleeeease, Telltale?
You can have my money then. I promise.
Skorpeyon @ Jul 7th 2009 7:23PM
Agreed, a thousand times. When most RTS and MMO games are releasing on both Mac and PC, adventure game companies need to realize that this is exactly the kind of thing that needs to be cross-platform.
Enyu @ Jul 7th 2009 1:35PM
I'm very, very angry that that Joystiq managed to get and play through the first episode before it is even available for download to the general public.

I'm twitching to get playing, I just wish they'd update. If the fact that Telltale's website keeps crashing under the weight of the people checking for the game is any indication I would say this is a highly anticipated title. I bought the full season, I'm waiting for the XBLA remake next week of the 1st game and I can't wait for the steam release of all the old Lucasarts titles. It's like all the games I enjoyed as a kid will be available again. WEE! :-)

Has our favorite disembodied terror from Hell been spotted yet?
SmokestormX @ Jul 7th 2009 2:02PM
Yes i've also been checking thier site every half hour or so , they had the text "Launch of the screaming website" in the forum section when it's been overloaded today, and there are reports of narwhal website errors.

no still not here..... sure I've waited many years for this , why is 1 more hour such a nightmare.

I've pretty much giving up. It's already rather late in the UK, and even if it's up here by a reasonable time, the traffic is going to make it impossible to download.

...I really hate the lack of a "Delete" function on this comment system, I swear to God. That makes TWO comments I want to delete (this and the reply to Jakka), and ZERO ways of doing so...
Jakka (DSG Defence Force!) @ Jul 7th 2009 4:43PM
It's for the greater good. Otherwise with easily editable and deletable comments, trolls like Sprinkles would run rampart and we'd have to Quote-For-Truth everything they say.
ArchiGamer @ Jul 7th 2009 5:46PM
If I get more Wii points I plan getting this as soon as I can.
Crayfish @ Jul 7th 2009 6:58PM
"Whatever happened to just pointing and, you know, clicking where you want to go? "
I agree with this completely. Stupid keyboard movement is what nearly ruined Grim Fandango for me. Thankfully that had a great story... Escape From Monkey Island however, the key movement just made it worse.
I don't need--nor want--to be 100% involved in my characters movement in an adventure game. It's an adventure game. What are they really gaining from removing the old way of playing them?
SeriousKriss @ Jul 8th 2009 2:02AM
Completely agree, this is backwards. I used to be able to play with only one hand and now I need both, with no tangible improvement.
Ben @ Jul 10th 2009 11:15PM
If you left-click and drag, he moves the way your mouse moves. Not as good as point-and-click moving, but it's an alternative to keyboard use.
Crayfish @ Jul 10th 2009 11:29PM
The left-click and drag alternative just puzzles me even more. I mean, at what stage did that seem like a better concept than the original mouse control?
You'd think that LucasArts has some kind of sinister patent on point-and-click movement in adventure games the way this has turned out.
fco. @ Jul 7th 2009 8:14PM
It's out!
