A look at Bungie Pro Video for Halo 3
(~$9.38) per year -- can also render their saved Halo 3 films directly to a WMV video file on Bungie.net. We won't pretend to understand the technical wizardry behind it all, but we decided to take it for a spin and see how well it stacks up to other methods of video capture. After the break, check out some samples of Bungie Pro Video versus our own consumer-level capturing method. That said, Bungie provides downloadable versions of all videos, so you can upload it to any service you like. Each video is hosted by Bungie for at least a month, but will be removed eventually, so you'll want to download a copy before then (though you could always render it again in the future).
Consumer SD capture card (Elgato EyeTV Hybrid) 640x360 via Viddler (Download)
Bungie Pro Video HD 1280x720 via YouTube (Download)
There's another caveat as well, depending on what you plan to do with your videos. Bungie Pro Video operates on a budget system, allotting each user five minutes of rendering per month. Consider that a single minute of HD footage counts as all five of your monthly minutes, and you don't get much. If you plan to use Bungie Pro Video a lot, you'll have to purchase more minutes from Bungie -- ten render minutes cost 100
($1.25). Probably not ideal for all the budding Machinimatographers out there.Summing things up, Bungie Pro Video is a pretty astounding technical accomplishment, and it should be great for folks who want to share their truly pro moments with the rest of the world. If, however, you want to be more creative, you're probably better off with a different capturing solution (there are even relatively cheap HD solutions, if HD is important to you).

Huzzah for another outlet for disposable income!
Captain Planet @ Jul 8th 2009 6:50PM
As a Halo/Bungie fan, I do have to say this is pretty sweet. I hope the Forza team is watching because I'd love for something like this in Forza 3.
Props to Bungie for raising the bar yet again.
lllOriginlll @ Jul 8th 2009 6:52PM
Actually really rather impressed... Makes me consider getting Bungie Pro I will say!
Although I noticed my friends who got Halo Wars (and thus the Mythic Map Packs) got extended file shares, is this the same? Will they have "Bungie Pro" or is that just something else entirely?
Cause Halo Wars + Bungie Pro (More expensive) >>> Bungie Pro (less)
Personally xD
Josh @ Jul 9th 2009 12:47PM
I believe buying Halo Wars or the Mythic Map Pack (in its first week or something) got you a free month of Bungie Pro. They've done things like that in the past with the Legendary Map Pack as well. Also buying Halo 3 on its release date got you 3 months, I believe.
relaxeder @ Jul 8th 2009 6:55PM
Cool, I love converting wmv to mpeg... and having to install Silverlight...
For all Bungie's talk about their studio going independent, they still seem to bend over a lot for Microsoft to plug their proprietary formats wherever they can.
Sean @ Jul 8th 2009 7:04PM
Yeah, they totally should have said 'screw this' and not given us an incredibly awesome FREE service.
I seriously doubt they could have afforded this if they hadn't used MS's tech.
relaxeder @ Jul 8th 2009 7:36PM
>FREE service
>750 ms points
Hmmm...
Also lol @ Captain Planet, maybe you should do the growing up and take a break from the vidya before you shoot somebody.
sonicspike41 @ Jul 9th 2009 1:05AM
Let me get my handy dandy checklist out here. Hmm...
Owned? Check.
Also owned? Check!
Everything seems to be in order here. relaxeder seems to have things running as they should. A +1 indeed.

"You stupid fuck, Halo is OWNED BY MICROSOFT. What the fuck did you expect, .mov files and ffdshow plugins. Grow the fuck up idiot."
Grow up? Um, you do realize that your comment is orders of magnitude more childish than anything the original commenter said, don't you? Ah, where would the internet be without oblivious fools like yourself? That is a youtube-quality comment if I've ever seen one.
Kiz @ Jul 8th 2009 7:00PM
The number of people who will actually feel the urge to pay for this is miniscule compared to the overall playerbase, but I guess it's good for the few who actually are willing to pay...
Einhanderkiller @ Jul 8th 2009 7:08PM
Seems expensive.
2 minutes of HD footage for $1.25.
BunnySlapper @ Jul 8th 2009 7:10PM
Why is the top video age-gated? There's nothing even remotely questionable in the video...
Free market research?
Richard Mitchell @ Jul 8th 2009 10:14PM
Footage of all M-rated games is supposed to be age gated, regardless of content.
Whocares @ Jul 9th 2009 7:20AM
free market research? - I'd think they would find everybody on this site being born on the 1st January or 1st December....not exactly marketing gold.
(unless your the 1 in a million who spend the time to put their actual birthday in).
Obie @ Jul 8th 2009 7:18PM
That is pretty cool, especially if you just wish to upload clips.
But you can get a lot better video quality from consumer grade electronics.
This Halo 3 clip was recorded via DV cam, and edited/upconverted in Adobe Premiere Elements.
I like to edit and add music, something Bungie's video service does not do ( yet).

Obie @ Jul 8th 2009 7:25PM
Oh yeah make sure to click the HD button, not too shabby right?
ifalldownstairs @ Jul 8th 2009 7:29PM
That's why Bungie allows you to download the video files - you can use whatever video editing software you want from there
Obie @ Jul 8th 2009 7:33PM
True, but you only get a certain allowance on the clips you can download from Bungie, right?
It's fine for anyone without a capture card, but why spend money on clip downloads? Save your money and buy a capture card instead.
But that's just me.
aristokrat @ Jul 8th 2009 8:29PM
They've already talked about this on bungie.net. If you're trying to do machinima, this is not a solution for you. If you just want to be able to video-ify your highlights for the month, then this is a much better solution than buying a capture card and dealing with that whole set-up.
Obie @ Jul 8th 2009 8:52PM
Agreed!
reddynamis @ Jul 8th 2009 8:48PM
You want to something "pro"? Check this out.

Prox @ Jul 9th 2009 9:08AM
"pro" = "luck" ?
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 8th 2009 9:10PM
It would be worth it if they also included an easier way to save the files into my hardrive and pass them into the PC using the Media center of the xbox 360 so I can edit them without any further problem.
If you do machinimas buy it and use it at your hearts content if you don't is crap,I had it for a year and I rather have an universal capture card (Like the one those fellas at Rooster Teeth have) than paying a subscription for a single game.
Anyhow anyone feels like getting the Vidmaster achievement or playing MLG with me? or as you youngsters say: R u redy to rape sum noobs in mlg 'cause i'm going to fuck you up becayuse I'm the best and shit and you guys suck and have no skillz,no skills u pathetic noobs,I rape your grandmothers and ur sisters cause thats how good i am.
(Speaking in youngster is like having tourette's syndrome)
Azbulldog @ Jul 8th 2009 9:41PM
Microsoft Silverlight...sigh.
Ordeith @ Jul 8th 2009 11:06PM
What do you have against silverlight?
Silverlight>Flash
Tyler @ Jul 12th 2009 1:18PM
@Ordeith
Easy. Flash is much more common than Microsoft's crap heap. They're already getting my money with Windows 7. I'll be damned if I'm going to use Silverlight.
qwerty613 @ Jul 8th 2009 10:18PM
I was interested, because I just got a new HDTV and didn't want to go through all the trouble of hooking up my capture card to it (it was hard enough getting it working the first time on the old TV) so I could make more machinima (I had a series that had about 4 episodes and around 30-some viewers that I wanted to start up again). however, the 5 minutes a month limit stopped me from signing up for Bungie Pro, simply because these machinima episodes would be released weekly, and would all be around 5-8 minutes long. Sorry Bungie, almost, but not quite.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jul 9th 2009 12:50AM
I hope the Forza 3 team is NOT paying attention to this.
I want to buy a game and own it, not rent it.
K1LLER HORNET @ Jul 9th 2009 9:20AM
what are you talking about?
this is an extra feature for people who want it.
ysdarkfact @ Jul 9th 2009 12:56AM
This does seem like the biggest ripoff ever. Especially since games that already do this, do this for free, and Noby Noby Boy uploads straight to Youtube. Keep in mind that game is only five dollars.
Judy @ Jul 10th 2009 3:03AM
