In a crowded MMORPG market, we always had trouble remembering which one, exactly, Dungeons and Dragons Online was. As of August 6, it'll be a little easier, and the game becomes Dungeons and Dragons Online: Unlimited, or "the one that used to be a paid one, but now is free."
It's an interesting strategy, and we're curious to see how it pans out. We'd issue a stern reminder, though, that the true cost of MMORPGs (your immortal soul) is much pricier than a few more bucks on your Visa every month.

Yeah really, it's not like it costs the company running it any money, right?
Also, read the Terms of Service-you never buy an MMO. You only buy the software, not the right to use it.
"ZOMG why should I pay for tags and registration and gas and insurance and taxes for road maintenance, I already bought the car!" Moron.

suckittrebek, you DO know that Guild Wars has ZERO monthly fees, and NO Store and they run their game servers, provide constant updates and have produced several expansions?
So your argument that because they need to keep the game going, there needs to be a monthly fee is invalid.

Christ, can we get over this yet? He died almost 3 weeks ago... September 11th didn't last this long...

DDO is fucking slick. Everyone should give it a shot, now that it's free. It's refreshingly different from WOW and all of its clones, and is a lot of fun to play.
Get some friends together, get in a party, plug in those headsets for the full voice chat, and go delve into some dungeons - for zero dollars. Can't recommend it enough.

I enrolled in the beta and installed it last night. I was quite impressed! I'm hoping to hit it up a bit more this weekend to really explore a bit. I first heard about this on the Gamers With Jobs podcast last week - what the producers told them was really intriguing, so far as the pricing structure and what content you can get for free, and what you can't.
For example, the ability to play for free, but buy just a dungeon that you can hop into and play on your own (or with a friend, after you give them your guest pass) - and that dungeon can be played offline if you want, just as if it were a standalone product. It's a pretty ambitious MMO model that they're trying out!
I'll certainly give it a go.

And if you ever played it, you'd know the difference between a free game, and a GOOD game. I'm not saying WoW is the end all be all of MMO's but I make it a point to try out most MMO's and Guild Wars is pathetic in comparison to Monthly Fee MMO's.

I really liked the time I spent playing DDO, and this beta is good, but they need to get over the awful lag hurdles in it. They took all the fun out of the game.
