EA's UK PR team just tweeted an announcement that
Command & Conquer 4 is now in development, though the linked press release doesn't seem to exist yet. This seems to us like the result of an itchy trigger (or tweeter) finger. With recent
online surveys asking what people would like to see in the next
Command & Conquer, we were expecting an announcement sooner rather than later. Still, this is a little earlier than we -- and EA, seemingly -- had expected the announcement to come. We'll update you with more information on the game once the press release becomes available.

I don't think C&C can survive in this age of Starcraft 2, Dawn of War 2, Company of Heroes, etc. The franchise needs a new direction IMO, though I'm sure I'll buy it when it comes out because I'm an RTS dork.
nutman @ Jul 8th 2009 12:42PM
Well if they keep making games then obviously it's doing well for them. It's not like every RTS needs to follow the same formula. Company of Heroes is cool and different, but why should every game be like that?
I like the standard RTS titles like Starcraft and C&C.
Captain Planet @ Jul 8th 2009 1:02PM
I never said it needs to be like Starcraft 2 or DoW 2, but C&C hasn't done anything different since Red Alert 2. I don't know if you play C&C regularly like I do but if you visit the EA forums you can tell that most people there are extremely unhappy with the previous 2 C&C games (C&C3 and RA3). Just because there is another C&C game coming doesn't mean the games are good. If that logic was correct, Uwe Bowl would have won 14 Oscars and 10 Academy Awards by now.

Considering the lowest score a Command and Conquer game has got on metacritic is a 75 I would say the series is doing good.
Einhanderkiller @ Jul 8th 2009 1:14PM
The survey sort of indicated that they're willing to go in a slightly different direction if fans are interested.
Captain Planet @ Jul 8th 2009 1:14PM
Yes, because MetaCritic is the end all be all of gaming punditry.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 8th 2009 1:38PM
Alright so what would you suggest we look at then Captain Planet? You make it look like you can't come up with an argument against that so instead you try and be a dick. Great job looking like an ass.
Optimaximal @ Jul 8th 2009 2:02PM
Wait? People were unhappy with C&C3 & RA3?
I thought C&C3 went down well for getting the core series' story back on track whilst updating the engine & RA3 was quite well received for integrating co-op/teammates well and taking a few liberties with the whole land/water mechanic.
Granted, they haven't been supported as well in the multi-player side as well as they should, but that's never really been C&Cs strong point since EA took over.
Are you sure it's not more like 'I was unhappy with C&C3/RA3'?
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 8th 2009 2:21PM
@Optimaximal
I think he believes that if him and a couple forum posters didn't like it than no one likes it.
K1LLER HORNET @ Jul 8th 2009 8:14PM
if C&C 4 has Kane (which it should), i will be playing this.
C&C 3 was pretty good.
RA3 was utter crap.
Nick @ Jul 8th 2009 8:23PM
C&C will continue to live for awhile longer just because of the name. I haven't played the last two C&C games but, from what I understand, the games were received fairly well by the press.
@Captain Planet - Metacritic compiles the ratings from just about every professional reviewer out there (and gamers' reviews), so I would consider it quite a reliable indicator of whether or not a game is "good" overall.
Premature ejaculation man @ Jul 8th 2009 10:02PM
They tried a new direction with Generals. Hated by the extreme fans (however, not by me, whos been playing C&C since its inception) but sprouted a few different kinds.
All I've been wanting is Generals 2.
uncle jesse @ Jul 8th 2009 12:39PM
Well, duh.
nutman @ Jul 8th 2009 12:41PM
I hope it's a return to Generals. That was a good idea, but it had some issues that could be fixed in a sequel.
At least it was somewhat different from the other C&Cs.
Ihavepants @ Jul 8th 2009 1:14PM
If it's called Command and Conquer 4, it's not Generals 2. It will be a continuation of the Tiberium franchise... not a good idea IMO because the gameplay will most likely be too similar to Red Alert 3(and all other C+C games) and the setting and visuals will be too similar to Startcraft 2 and Dawn of War 2(and C+C 3).
Alphathon @ Jul 8th 2009 1:39PM
I don't think most C&C fans would agree, most seem to hate generals because it's so different. I really enjoyed gens, but I don't really consider it to be C&C (if I were to release a new one, I'd go the same way as Modern Warfare 2 and drop the super-title, or whatever you want to call it). If it's called C&C 4 though, like Ihavepants said it is a tiberium game. What I want to know is will it use a completelly new engine, because RA3 uses a modified version of the SAGE engine used in C&C3, which is in turn a modification of the BFME2 SAGE...then BFME SAGE, then C&C Generals SAGE, then Renegade W3D, then all the way back to the Emperor: Battle for Dune engine.
Ihavepants @ Jul 8th 2009 1:50PM
I don't see why they'd scrap their current engine when there's nothing wrong with it and is obviously designed to be upgraded modularly.
PeterF @ Jul 8th 2009 2:14PM
At least completely rewrite the network code! ALL C&C games get EXTREMELY slow if the game goes on for a long time.
LegendaryRedass @ Jul 8th 2009 12:46PM
I heard this one I gonna add rpg elements.
Alphathon @ Jul 8th 2009 1:49PM
You sure you're not thinking of Tiberium? Wouldn't be surprised if it did though, most RTSs since Warcraft 3 seems to have had RPG elements of some kind.
Ihavepants @ Jul 8th 2009 2:09PM
ME TOO!

Oooooooo More Kane-y Goodness!
Bobs @ Jul 8th 2009 12:52PM
Needz moar Generalz!
AtomicPlayboy @ Jul 8th 2009 12:56PM
What I'd like to see from the C&C guys:
- a Generals sequel
- a Tiberium Dawn prequel
- another Dune RTS
What we'll probably get:
- a DoW2-style, hero-focused RTS in the C&C universe
Sigh.
Degolas @ Jul 8th 2009 2:15PM
Dune RTS? Did I read that right?
Yes please.
nukee @ Jul 8th 2009 2:12PM
Fuck that. Bring back Command and Conquer: Tiberium.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 8th 2009 2:17PM
I thoroughly enjoyed C&C3, so more C&C makes me happy.
bluestriker @ Jul 8th 2009 2:20PM
I really hope it makes a return to the Tiberian Sun/Firestorm feel. Those were the days. :P
peepoop @ Jul 8th 2009 2:36PM
I didn't care for the newest C&C at all, it felt horribly cumbersome to play. CC Generals was really fun to play, I'd rather see a return to that franchise.
Either way I'm playing Starcraft 2 this year along with Diablo 3, I'm not buying/playing anytihng else for 2 years tops.
tuco @ Jul 8th 2009 2:45PM
I didn't like Kane's Wrath because I couldn't play it online for the first six months I had it. I kept getting error messages about the EA serves being unavailable. If they release another, I'll be waiting to see that it works before I buy it.
Shadowlinedesigns @ Jul 8th 2009 3:18PM
I just got this email in my inbox from commandandconquer.com newsletter. Says to keep an eye on the site for an "announcement"
http://docs.google.com/View?id=dc37mhbr_11dnn8qjdr (its a google docs thing)
derdaim @ Jul 8th 2009 4:09PM
On the last page of my favouite pc-only mag, there is a screenshot of C&C 3 plus an announcement of a new rts next month....

Joe @ Jul 10th 2009 11:05AM
This had better have TIBERIUM LIFEFORMS just like in the Tiberian Sun/Firestorm games =_=. Also.. The picture of those huge mechs ... NOD Should have a giant scorpion mech, GDI Hawk/falcon/eagle =.= EA phails.. epically
Joe @ Jul 10th 2009 10:46PM
Hmm looking at the two screenshots again... I see technology from Tiberian Sun for GDI.. Is that the Mammoth MK II ? >=O.. Phail? ok maybe not so epically =X
Joe @ Jul 10th 2009 11:30AM
Hmm is that the Mammoth MK II :O
The mechs in the pictures... ~_~ NOD Should have a Scorpion mech, GDI a Hawk/Falcon/Eagle..
Well EA still has plenty of time to make this game :S
