Joystiq readers will likely recall that one John Bruce Thompson -- "Jack" to his friends -- was disbarred last year from practicing law in the state of Florida. However, it seems Thompson has maintained that he's still allowed to practice law within the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, which is a federal court.
Enter Judge Federico Moreno, who has issued an order to Thompson, asking him to explain why he should not also be barred from the District Court. The order asks that Thompson submit his defense, along with copies of all documents related to his previous disbarment, within 30 days (the order was issued on June 26).
Thompson, reports GamePolitics, is not pleased, and has since sent Moreno an email "request/demand," asking that the judge provide copies of all communications between Moreno and the Florida Bar concerning himself. Once again, it looks like Thompson's legal career is on shaky footing. Still, we doubt another disbarment will put a stop to Thompson's anti-gaming efforts. The first one certainly didn't.

I have to admit, the first read through of this article I felt bad for the guy and disgusted at all the nasty comments people were making about him. I mean this guy is losing his livelyhood all because of good intentions gone awry, right?
Not quite. A quick Google search and a browse through of a couple of news articles ranging from 1987 to 2008 shows that this guy should never have been practising law to begin with.
Passing a note Janet Reno asking her to check off a box if she was gay, bisexual, or straight? Does this guy have a 6th grade mentality or something?
Here's a quote from an artice about one of his crusades against rap music...
"In sending documents to opponents, Thompson would frequently attach a photocopy of his driver's license, with a photo of Batman pasted over his own. Thompson said, "I have sent my opponents pictures of Batman to remind them I'm playing the role of Batman. Just like Bruce Wayne helped the police in the movie, I have had to assist the sheriff of Broward County." He also wore a Batman wristwatch."
What a kook.

You also forgot the part where he threatened Penny Arcade.
Thompson made a simple bet, in that if someone made a game about a certain asian father getting revenge for his son, he'd pay $10,000 to a charity. When someone did make the game, he said "F*** you" and refused to pay.
Penny Arcade then sent a check for 10k to said charity with a note that mentioned something about him.
He got butthurt and started stalking and generally doing everything some psycho killer would do.
The man is beyond just a religious nut, or zealous vigilante. He is just plain insane. I have no clue how he got his degree in law, but its obvious that was a biiiiiiiiig mistake, and I bet some undercover and under-table work was done so he could get the degree, as every case I've heard about associated with him has ended with him getting his arse whooped.

Maybe this is a question to be answered by your Law of the Game columnist, but I thought that most states practiced a sort of "reciprocal disbarment." I thought that once one state disbarred you and published the notice, you'd be removed from the others as well.

I met Jack Thompson in person at the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention, where he debated Joystiq's own Mark Methinitis. Jack is actually a decent guy, when he wants to be. The debate went very well, with great points and jokes on both sides.
I am actually shocked Joystiq has not covered that event, considering.... Joystiq.
