New MechWarrior a reboot, called ... MechWarrior
112
Teased earlier this week, a new MechWarrior is currently being forged by Smith and Tinker (founded by FASA co-founder Jordan Weisman) and Piranha Games. IGN was informed that this is not being considered MechWarrior 5, but a reboot of the series. The title will release on PC and Xbox 360, and should include a full single-player campaign, "as well as support for four-player co-op campaign" and multiplayer.
There is currently no release window scheduled for the game, nor is there a publisher -- those two things are typically co-dependent. Check out the MechWarrior reveal trailer after the break.

I hope by "reboot" they mean in the "Batman Begins" sense, not in the "The Final Destination" sense.

Warhammer and atlas are looking pretty damn faithful with minimal artistic freedom taken on their design, this is a very good thing. also f*cking awesome!

Awesome!
And as much as I love the Clan stuff I'm happy that everything shown (thus far at least) is pre-Clan

3015 is well before the fourth succession war, let alone the clan invasion.
Well, unless they intend to seriously fuck with the chronology.
Seems like an odd time to set anything...

This is going to be awesome! I'm huge fan of everything MechWarrior.
Maybe if this game does well we will see a MechWarrior MMO created. Now that would be AWESOME!

Well, that's it. Game over. The game to end all gaming hath come, so everyone else may as well give up.
Sure, we had some good times together, but the king of all games is back, and you've all become merely petty distractions in its wake.
That is, until they remake X-Wing.

Hell yeah. This is going to be amazing. Between this and MechWarrior: Living Legends, the Crysis mod that looks phenomenal, it's a good time to be a MechWarrior fan. Reports of our demise has been greatly exaggerated it seems.

@OldProfessorZertoss: Also, Smith and Tinker (the guys making this new game) have given MekTek the rights to release MechWarrior 4 and ALL its expansions for free.

It's being co-developed by them, the other half of the equation is Smith and Tinker, who are the new face of the old FASA Studios.
Also, the Piranha founder is one of the founders of FASA, as well.
So, chill.

Why does all the architecture on a different planet 1000 years from now look exactly the same as our world today? They have giant walking robots yet they still have to park their ground-based sportscar at the top of a parking structure? That's the best we were able to come up with and we just stuck with it for 1000 years? Really.

Actually that's consistent with the game universe. They don't have flying cars nor does the average Joe go around in a giant walking robot. In fact, there's Aerotech and another componant of the Battletech universe games that was dedicated to infantry including tanks. I mean really, a building is still going to be a building and there's a certain artistic feel they have to maintain to keep faithful to the game's source material. Frankly I'm pumped, this game, if it happens, will be awsome. I'm just glad one of the original owners of Fasa is the head of one of the companies producing this.

Where better to park your flying car than atop a building? Surely we'll have flying cars in 1,000 years, right? After all, the military and its enemies will have upgraded to 20-story robots by then.

Yeah, the game will be great and all that, but look at how much architecture has changed in just the past couple hundred years. There's been a huge evolution. When I see buildings in a game that are supposed to exist around the year 3000 and they look exactly the same as buildings that exist today, it strikes me as extremely lazy on the part of the creative/development team. If you're going to reboot it, reboot it. Don't just take a bunch of old models from Turbosquid and say "yep, that's our futuristic otherworldly city". At least try to come up with something believable.

@Rick watch Back to the Future and other movies from 25 years ago. People thought we'd have a lot of things by the year 2000, flying cars included. Progress has slowed immensely my friend.

Of course you're not going to see a lot of progress in just 25 years. But look back 1000 years ago at what people had and compare it to today. It's beyond a night and day difference. Look at how much technology and architecture has changed in just the past 150 years! You mean everything just stops now and we coast on it...except the technology that develops giant fighting robots? For the next 1000 years? I call bullshit and a lack of imagination.

First its way more than a 1000 years in the future. Secondly in the Mechwarrior universe different planets have different levels of tech. Third anti gravity technology is very energy consumptive, thus the probe using rockets. Thats probably why things look the same, its the most efficient and I doubt we will see things change in any large way for a long time to come.

Actually, it is in fact set 1000 years in the future. Check the info at IGN. It's set in the year 3015 on the planet Deshler.

As for your other points, I just don't buy your explanations. Sorry. I'm sure 1000 years ago, someone thought that there was no way to improve upon a horse as the ultimate and most efficient mode of transportation, too, but that doesn't make it reality when you jump forward to our time. You're making up excuses for lazy creativity.

Well, it's faithful to the source material, and that's all the logic they need.
Besides, the buildings get shot up so much, they gotta be cheap!

... Are you from the United States? Go to Rome, Venice, Vienna, or Istanbul and tell me architecture completely 100% changes over the course of 1,000 years.

It's actually to help the world feel *more* real, believe it or not. If it was full of crazy, high-tech architecture people wouldn't recognize anything, it would all feel fake. But by going with what people are familiar with, it grounds them in reality and makes the whole game feel more believable.
Besides, it's not Earth, maybe they just haven't received the same technology that the rest of the galaxy has?
In any case, the Mechs look awesome and that's what the game is really about.

It's faithful to the source material. Wonder techs exist in the Battletech universe but other than the requisite FTL needed for the scope and the plot devicium that makes Mech viable in the first place it's a generally hard science universe.
Also they've had MASSIVE wars that ground tech to a halt by destroying most every example and means of production for advanced tech. Then Comstar assassinated everyone even remotely capable of improving what was left.

My thoughts precisely...I wonder if this will be a much more in-depth Mechwarrior game, or if it will be more pick-up-n'-play like Mechassault. I miss Mechassault.

lol, why would it being a PS3 exclusive even cross your mind? The franchise has always been about the PC.

Pretty sure Microsoft still owns FASA, so the chances of this coming to a Sony platform are pretty minimal I would guess.

@naomio: Microsoft disbanded FASA, which is why Smith and Tinker was formed from the relics of FASA. But still, a MechWarrior game on anything other than PC is blasphemy anyway, so I doubt this would hit PS3.

Microsoft still owns the MechWarrior IP so I wouldn't expect anything to come to the PS3 anytime soon.

You do realize the MechWarrior franchise has been on almost every system since the Super Nintendo days right?
