With good old games being appreciated more than ever -- as evidenced by yesterday's arrival of classic LucasArts titles on Steam -- we can welcome another retro fave, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, to the growing ranks of "remember-when-ware" -- for free. The game, which paved the way for a more modern classic, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, is now available for download via the developer's site but won't run right out of the box ... er, zip file.
Since the game files are exactly the same as they were in the original 1996 release, they require DOS to run. Thankfully, Bethesda has provided a link to the freeware DOS emulator, DOSBox, as well as detailed instructions on how to get the game up-and-running using it. How thoughtful! So, if you're an Elder Scrolls fan -- or just like yourself a good RPG -- the deals don't come much better than this. Just remember: it's not always the looks that count.

I like these graphics better than the newer Elder Scrolls.

Do you have to choose "huge installation" for it to work? It's complaining about not finding a CD when I chose minimum installation

Woohoo man I haven't played this in ages. I'll go head and check this out. Ah yes the return of elder scrolls nudity.....without a mod that is.

For those trying to use Boxer go get the new beta which Alun has updated to allow you to use the huge install.
http://boxer.washboardabs.net/blog/
This still isn't perfect yet, you must still edit the z.cfg file and change the cdpath to c:\dagger\arena2 instead of it pointing to the d:\ (drive). After you have done this run the game by selecting "show dos prompt" instead of running one of the executables and use this to run the game.
c:\dagger>"fall z.cfg" NO QUOTES
Hope this helps everyone trying to run in Boxer...I know it's a pain to still type in commands but its better than trying to mount everytime in dos-box. I have sent Alun an update on this and hopefully he comes up with another beta to solve this problem. Enjoy!!!

Answer me this everyone. A buddy and I were talking about these older games the other day (Duke Nukem, Wolfenstien & Kings Quest were my first ones). Why don't the makers of these games rerelease them with new graphic & sound engines and add some game enhancments? Why not take all of the previous Elderscrolls and combine them into an updated Oblivion package. There have to be a ton of people who haven't played these games because they were in diapers when they originally came out or they were like me and couldn't afford a decent computer at that point in their life to be able to play them. I personally would love to revist those games with a fresh face on them. Here are the games I'd Like to see redone.
Doom I & II
Ultima Underworld I & II
Duke Nukem (Or would that be a joke to ask for)
Might & Magic Series
Porsche Unleashed
Mech Warrior Series
Thanks for the comments

Better still, no config editing and double click to launch:
After doing the Huge install.
Open the DFCD package that Boxer created (when you ran the installer) and create a new folder in it called Daggerfall.cdrom
Copy everything from the DFCD folder into it.
Run by double clicking the package Boxer created.
