Game & Watch & DSiWare
If you've been having a tough time accruing enough coins in Club Nintendo to get your very own copy of Game & Watch Collection for DS, know that Nintendo is planning to parcel out nine different Game & Watch classics to DSiWare in Japan. Kotaku reports that Nintendo will be offering each individual game for a very reasonable 200 DSi Points over the summer, meaning you can have your own piece of gaming history on the go for a measly $2.
There's no word on these escaping Japan, but considering that a majority of the content offered on DSiWare there has made its way over here, it's likely only a matter of time.

I played that Donkey Kong Jr. game pictured back when it came out (I'm 37). That, plus the orange Donkey Kong game that opened up a la the DS, Oil Panic, and other Game & Watch games bring back memories of gaming back in elementary school.

$2 for a game that has less content than most flash games seems like a bit of a ripoff, actually.

"...a game that has less content than most flash games..."
sounds like someone never had a Game & Watch
Mr Khan @ Jul 10th 2009 6:51PM
It's definitely true for some games, like Ball (you juggle balls by changing the position of your hands between one of three positions for each hand), but others have their own special charm, like Helmet or Oil Panic.
Some of these would be more than worth it, but others probably aren't

They must have had a lot content considering their sort of the reason we have handhelds today like the DS and the PSP.
Uncontrol @ Jul 10th 2009 6:54PM
So you're saying a single Game & Watch Game is seriously worth $2, Moptimus?
And ArchiGamer, the idea of gaming on the go evolving over time has no real correlation with the content level of these games.
Moptimus Slime (The Return of Princess Griffin) @ Jul 10th 2009 7:11PM
if it was an actual Game & Watch, I'd be willing to pay way more than $2, so yes
Scuffles @ Jul 11th 2009 7:28AM
Hmm I wouldn't personally go and spend 2 on a single downloadable game and watch game I would personally go out and try to find an actual game and watch...
As to the game and watch being the reason behind modern hand held gaming systems ..... yes and no, Yes in that they helped pave the way and no in the fact that you could site just as much contribution to decks of playing cards or the majestic cup and ball.... both portable entertainment far predating the game and watch that arguably contributed just as much to the progression of modern portable entertainment.
Scuffles @ Jul 11th 2009 7:36AM
preemptive reply
Yes the actual game and watch would be far more expensive but I would greatly prefer it to overpriced DLC
Now if it was a reasonable price for a collection of game and watch games then we could talk.

Awesome. Hanafuda cards here I come!
dantebk @ Jul 10th 2009 6:30PM
Good point! I'll have enough coins for one or the other once Wii Sports Resort comes out. I'd been thinking about the Game & Watch Collection (simply because of the "exclusive" factor, since I don't usually like G&W games) but maybe I'll go for Hanafuda cards after all.
Mr Khan @ Jul 10th 2009 6:53PM
Especially since, at the rough conversion of 1 dollar per coin, the Game and Watch Collection runs you $800 worth of Nintendo brand loyalty, instead of $2 a pop.
capt_carl @ Jul 10th 2009 6:39PM
I had the Donkey Kong Jr. Game & Watch... :(

Are you saying that Fun had nothing to do with the evolution of handhelds? I know that may be a little extreme, but the only reason handhelds evolve is for the sake of gratifying entertainment on the go; entertainment being the element of fun.
ArchiGamer [thephilosophyofgames.wordpress.com] @ Jul 10th 2009 6:59PM
This is reply to Uncontrol.
At this point, I'm not complain anymore....
Uncontrol @ Jul 10th 2009 9:23PM
I'm saying that the evolution of handhelds reaching where it is today does not conclude that these games have enough content to be sold for $2 a piece.
ecco6t9 @ Jul 10th 2009 6:58PM
This is the best news yet, and possibly the start of something much bigger.
Brendan H @ Jul 10th 2009 7:01PM
I had a watch with games on it, does that count for anything?
MRLN @ Jul 10th 2009 7:07PM
And the true meaning of DSiware is revealed.
BrokenTriforce @ Jul 10th 2009 7:22PM
Another dead horse for Nintendo to mercilessly beat...
Danny @ Jul 10th 2009 8:41PM
Already got the club nintendo one XD
bjwanlund @ Jul 10th 2009 8:49PM
Okay, G&W is indeed cool, but I really, really, REALLY want to know when Nintendo is going to get off their bums and release the Game Boy Virtual Console/Virtual Handheld on the DSi. That is my killer DSi app, and I would buy a DSi in a heartbeat if it was announced to be on there.

Yes
raindog @ Jul 11th 2009 1:08AM
Agreed. The Donkey Kong G&W is cute and all, but as far as handhelds go I was a Microvision and Entex kid. (I'd rather see a recreation of Entex Galaxian2 with networked multiplayer than any of these....)
For portable Nintendo goodness, Donkey Kong '94 with full SGB colors is what I really want. Mario vs. DK and its Lemmings-like sequel really don't compare to it.
Of course, now that people have gotten the first homebrew code running on the DSi, I'm pretty sure there'll be a full-speed GBC emulator for it and that might be close enough. (No, I'm not going to dig my GBC and cartridge out of storage and carry it around just to play one game.) Less money for Nintendo but ah well, you snooze you lose.
