Rob Thomas knows digital marketing, wants in on Rock Band
Matchbox Twenty front man Rob Thomas, currently promoting his second solo album, told The Cut Scene Blog that he "obviously" wants his music in Rock Band; however, he hasn't been asked. While Thomas admits he isn't much of a gamer, he does have an 11-year-old son who enjoys rocking out to MTV and Harmonix's latest music title.
"There's something great about watching [my son] playing a Pixies song with me on Rock Band," he said. Thomas added, while Rock Band showcases the familiar world of music to children, the game has the ability to expose younger audiences to a wide "assortment of music." According to Thomas (above, center) -- who has become known for using new technology to promote his work -- he would welcome the opportunity to make the jump into his son's game of choice. We always welcome new music into our music games, but Thomas needs to wait his turn. We're still waiting for Ghostbusters, for crying out loud.

good to see a musician who is actually saying good stuff about music games. i would welcome some good matchbox twenty songs, preferably from bent.
Sly @ Jul 10th 2009 1:05AM
ugh, i meant bent from mad season.
Revariance @ Jul 10th 2009 7:27AM
Mad Season = Instant nostalgia for me. So I concur.
Michael Amory @ Jul 10th 2009 1:06AM
I know his probably isn't the "coolest" thing to say, but Rob Thomas in my opinion is one of the best pop artists of this current era. I bought "cradlesong" the day it came out and have had it on repeat every since. It's pop done right, good writing paired with catchy music. I would love to see him become part of Rock Band (Though they would have to be careful which songs they picked, some would definitely not translate well to the game)
I hope I'm not coming off as a PR guy for Thomas, I just know that his reputation with Matchbox 20 isn't the greatest and don't want to see this thread turn into a bash-a-thon.
MystileArmor @ Jul 10th 2009 1:15AM
I can agree with you though. His songs are catchy even though it's a bit too much on the pop side. But hey, if it makes him happy. He seems like a good guy with a genuine love for the music he creates, not a sell out.
Sly @ Jul 10th 2009 2:29AM
matchbox 20's early work is great. the only problem with them is that they became bigger than they were supposed to be. it's made their music overrated.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Jul 10th 2009 8:53AM
Yep, saying you like Rob Thomas is OBVIOUSLY the most uncool thing you can do.... while posting on the internet.... on a gaming enthuisiasts site....
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jul 10th 2009 9:47AM
^ Is that your backward-ass way of defending Rob Thomas to a guy who likes Rob Thomas, or did you have some other reason for posting that?
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jul 10th 2009 9:49AM
The obvious "this is a haven for 'uncool' bullshit" aside
el serpiente @ Jul 10th 2009 10:40AM
Sorry inchworm, you're not cool.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 10th 2009 1:23AM
I haven't heard of him until now,I look him up on youtube. He is quite good.
TomServo @ Jul 10th 2009 2:42AM
Well, his song with Santana was a huge hit, and it would work great in Guitar Hero (since Santana has a history in Guitar Hero anyhow).
So, it's kind of surprising that nobody's asked yet.
futurebiblehero @ Jul 10th 2009 2:55AM
Unfortunately, Sinbad's part of the approval process.
EasterSmoot @ Jul 10th 2009 10:33PM
Yeah, you in hell alright! You know what? My name is Sinbad. This is Sinbad's house, and when you in Sinbad's house you my bitch! Yeah, you know who that is? That's Rob Thomas - Matchbox Twenty. Sing a song. Shut up!
SecondTomorrow @ Jul 10th 2009 3:27AM
Any man with Alex DeLarge in his band is fine in my book.
ArchiGamer [thephilosophyofgames.wordpress.com] @ Jul 10th 2009 3:50AM
I wouldn't mind Rob Thomas or Matchbox 20's music in Rock Band, or even one based on their music.
JRM @ Jul 10th 2009 4:09AM
Does anyone even care about Matchbox 20 anymore? Their 15 minutes of fame ended 10 years ago!
Mabui @ Jul 10th 2009 9:03AM
So uh - have you seen the track list of Rockband and the DLC before?
Levi (God Hand Defense Force) @ Jul 10th 2009 4:11AM
Am I on crazy pills, or is the majority of people here actually in favor of having Rob Thomas' music in Rock Band?
t_m @ Jul 10th 2009 7:35AM
For once we have all decided to be positive and not try to rip everything to shreds.
This was a unanimous decision and will continue indefinitely. From now on we won't complain about developers, publishers, DRM, small flaws in games or attack other consoles.
The world will become a harmonious paradise.
scooterbaga @ Jul 10th 2009 4:45AM
I'm thinking maybe he should talk to Harmonix instead of waiting to be asked... He could be on their 'list'... a very very long awesome list.
Deck @ Jul 10th 2009 4:49AM
I like Matchbox 20 and even if their first stuff was "better" than their later stuff, I think they are pretty good overall. And Thomas seems like a genuine guy, so this shouldn't be bad if he got in some Rock Band.
Macroy @ Jul 10th 2009 6:13AM
As long as they make Long Day the song, I'm good.
uncle jesse @ Jul 10th 2009 10:11AM
Long day is awesome - good call. I was thinking about all their songs and that would definitely be the best one to have in there for both music and vocals.
deaftly @ Jul 10th 2009 7:33AM
Rob Thomas needs to wait for Generic Band to come out
t_m @ Jul 10th 2009 7:57AM
GAH! you ruined it. Now we won't have any harmonious paradiase on earth!
t_m @ Jul 10th 2009 7:58AM
Never heard any matchbos 20 stuff as they weren't big over here. though i did enjoy his songs with santana.
Mabui @ Jul 10th 2009 9:00AM
Matchbox 20 DLC? Yes please.
Deuce @ Jul 10th 2009 9:01AM
I'm not sure that anyone out there can quite match that semi-nasal whininess that he carries in every damn song he sings. Matchbox-20 is absolutely devoid of merit.
Bear @ Jul 10th 2009 9:32AM
Hey guys, let's hate on popular music because it's cool to do. Let me push my indie/underground bands on you but NOT TOO MUCH. I don't want anyone else to know about them...but if they become popular, I'll hate them forever.

Deuce @ Jul 10th 2009 5:19PM
Some of us just hate on a given group/song/etc. because it's just plain bad.
Monkeys Suck @ Jul 10th 2009 9:42AM
That's Rob Thomas, from Matchbox Twenty. Sing a song...Shut up!
God all this reminded me of was Sunny
Alzheimers @ Jul 10th 2009 9:51AM
Hey Rob, shouldn't you make some Rock songs before whining you're not in a game called "Rock Band"
Kyattsuai @ Jul 10th 2009 10:49AM
I'm not extremely familiar with his music, but his appearance on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia as Sinbad's sidekick was pretty awesome.
futurebiblehero @ Jul 10th 2009 2:02PM
I'm surprised you're the only other person to mention it.
I was never a terribly big fan of his music, but I just couldn't dislike anyone who was awesome enough to do that. I may be the only person out there that adores Rob Thomas and doesn't even listen to his music.
futurebiblehero @ Jul 10th 2009 2:07PM
(Oops, missed the guy above you. Still, clearly not enough people have seen it).
MuToiD_MaN @ Jul 10th 2009 11:26AM
Screw that canuck and his comedic accent and strategic use of voice cracking. His singing grates on my ears.
MuToiD_MaN @ Jul 10th 2009 11:35AM
The funny thing? He isn't even Canadian. How the hell did I think that? His "singing accent" still makes me sneer though.
Russ @ Jul 10th 2009 11:30AM
Wow, there sure are a lot of encouraging comments in here about getting this band in a music game. You do know we're talking about Matchbox 20 right?
VicViper @ Jul 10th 2009 11:58AM
Yeah, you'd think people would realize it's called 'Rock Band' not 'Wuss Band'.
Sly @ Jul 10th 2009 3:28PM
listen to matchbox 20's album mad season. you'll see.
AtomicPlayboy @ Jul 10th 2009 2:21PM
I'm lost. I already know that "Matchbox 20" is a term for tedious, limp-wristed pop-rock, but is "digital marketing" some term for dressing up like asshats and assuming douchelord poses for cameras?
Russ @ Jul 10th 2009 3:59PM
No thank you.
Batzarro @ Jul 10th 2009 4:16PM
